Diaz, who shares Martin's Cuban heritage, also liked the prospect of joining other players from the Miami area.

Cuban flags could do a lot for Sec 17 notoriety.

Watched him play twice and have mixed thoughts on him. I'd say he's closer to 6-10 than he is seven foot tall and he didn't strike me as particularly lengthy. Plays pretty hard, looked like he had decent touch around the rim and a jump hook, but has a strange gait to the way he runs. Also not sure about his hands.

We'll discuss him for rankings, but not 100% sure whether he does or doesn't make it in.

from bossi.  i may be back out again.  he saw him at orlando, btw, the same place everyone else did.  i wonder if he ever played even semi-decent anywhere else?

Kid is only 17 . . . also with proper S&C training and speed training his running form can be improved significantly.

Just barely 17, right?  Plus, he doesn't really look all that skinny in those pics.  Looks like he has pretty broad shoulders.  Nice frame for Greenie to work with.

Meek at it:
The Diaz house was packed when Kansas State faced Butler in the Elite Eight in March.

Surrounded by aunts, uncles and cousins — all of whom were pulling for Frank Martin and the Wildcats — Adrian Diaz had a feeling K-State might be in his future.

"Absolutely," said Diaz, a 6-foot-11 center from Miami.

Diaz made it official Sunday, becoming K-State's first verbal commitment for the class of 2011. A versatile big man from Hialeah-Miami Lakes High, Diaz chose K-State instead of Alabama, Florida, Purdue, Tennessee and others.

"I really felt comfortable with them — the offensive sets, how they run up and down the floor," Diaz said. "I really feel comfortable with the whole coaching staff, not just coach Martin."

Clearly, though, Martin's Miami connections factored in the decision. Diaz said his uncle is close to Martin and Shakey Rodriguez, Martin's former boss at Miami Senior High.

Diaz, who shares Martin's Cuban heritage, also liked the prospect of joining other players from the Miami area. Current Wildcats Martavious Irving and Freddy Asprilla spent their high school careers in Florida, and Miami has been a recruiting hotbed for K-State since Martin was hired.

"I'm not the only one from Miami that's going to be there," Diaz said.

ESPN described Diaz as a "major sleeper" in the 2011 class after his performance at the AAU nationals last week. Diaz, who recently turned 17, said his recruiting interest spiked significantly this summer.

"I would say last year at the end of the summer, that's when mid-majors started calling me and getting in touch with me," Diaz said. "As the year went on, I had bigger and bigger schools calling me."

Diaz's size — 6-11, 205 pounds — and length caught the eyes of high-major coaches, and the attention intensified when Diaz displayed an expanded offensive game this summer.

"I can run up and down the floor really well as a big man," Diaz said. "I have great hands. I can score in transition. I can hit 15-and-out jump shots."

With his stock climbing, Diaz didn't stay on the market for long. K-State fans won't be disappointed, he said.

"I play with heart, really," he said. "I'm going to leave it all on the court."

K-State will have at least two scholarships to fill in 2011 with the departure of seniors Jacob Pullen and Curtis Kelly. The addition of Diaz means K-State could field a future frontcourt of Diaz, Asprilla, Jamar Samuels, McDonald's All-American Wally Judge and 7-footer Jordan Henriquez-Roberts.

I'm picturing JB saying all those quotes and, yeah, sounds about right.

Per Scouts, Texas was recruiting him. That has to mean something good, right?

I mean, doesn't this kid just look like a winner?

Is his name Spanish for neck?

I'm not jumping up and down over the kid, but seeing that Jack is going somewhere else probably he seems to be the best big we could ring out of the crap rag that is the 2011 class.  I think taking a kid who is getting high major attention Probably because he is the only big who is even halfway capable) before he is recruited away is a safer move than being shut out on everyone later and hoping we can land Goff.  I applaud the staff for doing the responsible thing here.  Let's hope our next scholarship has more of a wow factor to it.

Adrian Diaz commits to K-State

Kansas State basketball coach Frank Martin picked up another Miami recruit this weekend.

His name is Adrian Diaz, a 7-foot, 205-pounder, who will soon be a senior at Hialeah-Miami Lakes high school.

Diaz is excited to play for Martin.

“I really felt comfortable with the coaching staff and their offensive program,” Diaz said by phone. “I think I fit into that system.”

Diaz’s father said Adrian’s relationship with Martin was the main reason he chose K-State.

Diaz is actually so comfortable with Martin that he committed without ever stepping foot in Manhattan. Listening to Martin and his assistants describe the town for two months was enough.

“He told them, ‘I’ll commit. I don’t even need to go see it,’” Andres Diaz said. “He pretty much had made up his mind. It’s a small town. He didn’t want to play in Miami. He wanted to leave Miami.

“Martin told him about the offense they’re going to run, and we’ve seen it on TV a lot of times. That’s basically all he needed.”

Diaz recently turned 17, and received interest from several programs before settling on Kansas State. He chose the Wildcats over North Florida, Virginia Tech, Miami, South Florida and others.

Andres Diaz said Purdue also called Sunday morning to offer a scholarship.

Barry Lazarus, the director of Diaz’s Gold Coast AAU team, described Diaz as “a phenomenal kid and player who has overcome a lot.”

His AAU basketball coach Gaston Rodriguez, describes Diaz as an incredibly talented player.

Andres Diaz said Adrian has “very good touch from the outside, and can run the court really good. He can also block a lot of shots.”

Stats on Diaz are not readily available, in part because of a foot injury he suffered during his junior season. But he was healthy in time for AAU ball, and was impressive on the court.

Diaz guessed his stats were close to 13 points, eight rebounds and four blocks per game.

“I can really run up and down the floor as a big man,” Diaz said. “I have great hands. I can finish in transition and I really love to play with my face to the basket.”

Before arriving at K-State, he hopes to put on another 15 pounds, and develop his back-to-the-basket game.

Diaz comes from a basketball family. His older brother, Andy Diaz, plays at North Florida.

Diaz will join a roster filled with others players with backgrounds in south Florida, including Martavious Irving, Freddy Asprilla and possibly Angel Rodriguez. Former players Denis Clemente and Luis Colon both had ties to the Sunshine State as well.

Give him time to get here and be around EMAW.  They don't always come to K-State looking great.

Funny how Frank believing in this kid isn't enough.  Takes a few scouts takes and a Purdue offering to sell people.  Let's just say that you can expect some more big things coming up.  For the people who like the 4 star and higher recruits it will be like Christmas.  The coaches are really sold on this diaz kid.  He's not JHR.  Better skill set right now than JO had at this point and a different type of player.  He is not a kid who is going to stay skinny.  Big frame on the kid.  Look on the bright side.  We have a kid who committed to us without even stepping foot on campus even when teams like Purdue, Tennessee, Texas, and Florida are involved.  That says alot about the places we are going with this staff and program.  Frank is making K-State a brand name.
