Alex Smith went to a goddamn NFC championship with young, talented players around him. Cassell didn't make the playoffs in his one season as a starter for the best NFL franchise of the last 20 years.

Give me a rough ridin' break.

Did you see Smith's defense he had that season? They were the reason the 49ers made the playoffs.

Smith had the 9th best passer rating that year. Dude isn't fantastic but he's a nice placeholder. There isn't a QB in the draft who could come in and do a better job immediately.

Alex Smith is the best (possible) option. If Chiefs draft EJ Manuel in the 2nd round, train him up for 2 years, then I don't know what else could have gone right for the Chiefs at the QB position this offseason.

Yeah, they were great, and he helped them by not rough ridin' up. But we also have like 5 pro bowlers on D. Smith would do great.

:sdeek: Terrible spot to take him.  I haven't seen where he projects to, but he is all hype and metrics on a piece of paper and no will to win.  Plus his arm will fall off his shoulder.

at this point you're just being a negative chiefs fan, which is fine, i get it. but i asked what your idea of a better alternative is for this off season and you said to draft geno smith with the first overall pick. i would rather get alex and draft the best available qb with the 34th pick. it doesn't look like many qb's will be drafted in the first round.

There will be plenty of franchise QB's taken in the first round, they just won't be coming to KC because we'd rather go the time honored retread route.

Texas Christian University coach Gary Patterson has been hired as Kansas State's 34th football coach, multiple sources have confirmed to GoPowercat.com.  Patterson replaces Ron Prince, who was fired Wednesday. - Tim Fitzgerald   Nov, 7, 2008

Geno will be a bust. He isn't that good. Looked great early in the year throwing to NFL receivers against bad defenses, looked mediocre against mediocre defenses.

Alex Smith will be a better QB over the next 3 years than anyone in this year's draft.

I don't know. There are some really good young QBs other than RGIII and Luck that came out of the last couple drafts unexpected.

Which is why I wouldn't mind taking one in the 2nd or third round.

Yeah, and I'd love to take a chance on one later, but it's not like there was any consensus on who that guy is going to be this year.   Just as likely, if not more, to draft Blaine Gabbert 2.0 than Colin Kaepernick 2.0.

It seems like anymore, guys who were average in college but "have huge upside" are average in the NFL (gabbert, clausen, etc) but guys who were college studs and win a lot but slip to the mid rounds are studs in the pros. I don't want to build my franchise around the next blaine gabbert.

I think I would rather use a first round pick on "probable bust" Geno Smith than spend 2 later picks on "proven bust" Alex Smith.

Alex Smith is not a proven bust. He was not worth the #1 overall pick SF used on him, but he's a good stop gap and absolutely worth a 3rd and a 6th (if the rumors are true). I'd rather use the #1 overall pick on a proven stud lineman, since the last successful chiefs team proved that you can win with a stud line and avg quarterback.

I think we should draft a qb at every round (except second or third where we pick up Arthur) then pay the LT we have right now and trade for a few defensive guys.

We should keep doing this until we hit the qb lottery.

Alex Smith absolutely was a bust, and I would be surprised if Geno ends up worse than he is. There is some merit to taking Alex and then using the first round pick on somebody else because Geno probably won't end up being much better than Alex, but there is also a possibility that Geno ends up being a stud. Nobody is proven until they are drafted. There are surprises and busts every year.

He was considered a bust only because of what they gave  up for him. If he was a third round pick, no one would say he was a bust. He's not an elite quarterback, but we're not building around him.

There will be a Russell Wilson in this draft.  He just won't be drafted by Kansas City, because we'll be too bust taking an offensive lineman and shoring up the QB position with Matt Cassel V2, without the Super Bowl caliber coaching staff.

We would totally find him under my plan.

What if it ends up being Barkley? He will get drafted mid-first round. Under your plan, we would just end up with a bunch of shitty QB's and miss on the one who ended up being good.

Well, we need to obviously plan the first one out a little bit and try to trade up as much as we can.  Also, we should go around talking down all the qb's who won't be our first pick so that we can catch them in the second round.

I know this is just you relaying this CFoD, but this doesn't change much in my mind. Maybe the Chiefs haven't taken a shot at him, but they sure as hell should now. If the 49ers want to get rid of him so bad that they're starting rumors, they'll get rid of him for almost anything.

GET ALEX SMITH HERE NOW.
I think what my friend Mitch is trying to say is that true love is blind.
