I don't mind this. Better than any QB the draft could have brought.

You could have said this in 2009 and it would have made just as much sense. Matt Cassel looked pretty good coming out of NE. How'd that turn out? Oh, our fans cheered his concussion.

Alex Smith is Matt Cassel redux. You want to do that again? You want to relive 2009 through now all over again?

I would not have, and did not say the same thing about Matt Cassel. I hated his singing from the start.

I see way more potential in Alex Smith.

At this point, the Hamburglar is a better alternative. The problem is if you don't draft the best QB available at the first pick, he won't be there in the 2nd round. So at some point you have to forget about the NUMBER 1 overall pick and realize this is your only pick out of 32 teams, and you just get first choice. The Chiefs haven't cared about who they have drafted the past 5 years, why do people give a crap now? I mean Dontari Powe? Dude was a 2nd rounder at best, but the Chiefs got him.

If we draft an offensive tackle, how many wins will that net the Chiefs? Probably none. May help reduce a few sacks, which could extend some drives which could add an extra TD or FG.  You don't have to draft franchise offensive lineman to be successful.

At some point, you have to take a risk and draft the best available at your position of NEED. There isn't a single guy in this draft that is above and all the best person in this draft. If there was, they'd be known prior to the combine. Geno Smith has solidified himself as the best QB thus far. Geno Smith is better than Matt Cassel AND you can get him for much cheaper than Alex Smith.

Alex Smith is guaranteed $8.5 million next year. Is he worth that? No, not even half.

so your better alternative is to draft geno smith #1 overall. i guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Honestly, there is no real right answer. It's a crapshoot and it happens to the Chiefs, go figure. I guess I'm just partial to having a franchise QB. That's the one thing that is missing from the Chiefs. I'd just love to be able to watch a QB develop and play his entire tenure in Kansas City. I'm tired of getting QBs from other teams and "trying to make it work".

I feel the Chiefs will be screwed regardless of what happens.

Alex Smith is certainly worth a third round pick. The Chiefs haven't drafted anyone yet with the new staff in place so melting down over this is pretty damn pathetic.

Alex Smith went to a goddamn NFC championship with young, talented players around him. Cassell didn't make the playoffs in his one season as a starter for the best NFL franchise of the last 20 years.

Give me a rough ridin' break.

Trent Green is proof you can be successful with a pitching machine for a Qb, so long as you have a badass line.  Alex Smith will be fine as long as the line gets healthy and they get a wr that can catch.

He definitely could. But spending a 3rd round pick on a guy who sucks does a lot less damage than a #1 pick franchise quarterback that sucks Bs and Ts

Read this. But before you do, replace "Haley" with "Reid". "Pioli" with "Dorsey". "Cassel" with "Smith". "2009" with "2013".

Deja vu.

Successful? Huh? How many playoff wins did he have? I forget.

i didn't read the article. but alex smith is not the same as matt cassel. smith started in college, was a #1 overall draft pick, has started in more than just one season. led his team to the NFC Championship game in 2011, while setting franchise records for fewest interceptions in a season, most consecutive passes without an interception, and most 4th quarter comebacks in a season. yes he got replaced this season, that's why he is available. he was 19-5-1 under Harbaugh, will take.

Can't wait to see him lead us to several post-season wins then. Gonna be a great new time in Kansas City. We will just forget the previous 20 years we've tried this same tactic that has resulted in 0 playoff wins.

at this point you're just being a negative chiefs fan, which is fine, i get it. but i asked what your idea of a better alternative is for this off season and you said to draft geno smith with the first overall pick. i would rather get alex and draft the best available qb with the 34th pick. it doesn't look like many qb's will be drafted in the first round.

You're right. This isn't exactly the same as 2009. It's a little worse. We didn't have the number 1 overall pick in the draft with the ability to draft a potential franchise QB like we do now.

Also, he compared Todd Haley to Andy Reid.
