I trust Dorsey and Reid, I guess...which makes me a supporter of "best player available."

Count me out on a QB with the first pick (assuming they do not have a QB rated #1, which is prolly safe to assume).

Kinda getting excited about this draft!!!!

I mean, we have a new GM/Coach team, and they have the very first pick on the draft...so we get to see what they think is the very best college football player is on the draft.

That's a cool way to gain some insight on their judgment.

I'll bet it won't be a 3-4 DE from LSU.

For Jakesie's peace of mind and to backup/reiterate Pete here are some stats from some recent Packers draft picks in their rookie season:

Clay Matthews: 16 games played, 51 tackles, 10 sacks
Greg Jennings: 14 games played, 632 rec yards, 3 TD
Jordy Nelson: 16 gp, 366 rec yards, 2 TD
BJ Raji: 14 gp, 25 tackles, 1 sack
AJ Hawk: 16 gp, 119 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 2 int
Jermichael Finley: 14 gp, 74 rec yards, 1 TD
James Jones: 16 gp, 676 rec yards, 2 TD
Mason Crosby: 16 gp, 79.5%
Sam Shields: 14 gp, 29 tackles, 2 INT
T.J. Lang: 16 gp
Brian Baluga: 12 games started
Jarred Bush: 16 games played

That's a pretty decent history of drafting players that make an immediate impact.

The Chiefs have been way behind the curve when it comes to QBs. They should have at least been drafting a QB with upside in the 3rd+ round every year since they brought Cassel in.

Look at all the playoff teams this year that had a decent starter but didn't let that stop them from trying to upgrade by drafting guys behind them: 49'ers, Redskins, Packers, Seahawks. Even though Pioli thought Cassel was decent, he should have been making a real effort to draft behind him.

If there was an obvious non-QB #1 in this draft, then I would say the Chiefs should take him. But there doesn't seem to be anybody far ahead of the field, so they might as well identify their best QB prospect and draft him #1. And then take another one later on.

I think Luke Joeckel is a very special player for his position. He's head and shoulders above the other lineman coming out, and I don't think you can say that about anyone else and their position.

Unless he's the next Orlando Pace or oscar Mathews I don't want him #1 overall.

I think he could be. Kalil was taken 4th overall and I think that was a great pick up for the Vikings. If the Chiefs didn't have Houston, I'd say take Jarvis Jones, but that seems pretty silly considering the Chiefs have lots of positions to be filled and that's one of the few that doesn't.

OT seems like the safest high first round pick.   I can think of very few busts and tons of success stories.   Kalil was a bit undersized for LT but he stepped in right away and played very well this year.

T, QB, or DE are the 3 biggest positions in the game, so those take priority. Since no QB is worth it, and I doubt the Chiefs want another young D-lineman, that leaves OT. A pick there makes sense, since the Chiefs could use some youth and depth on the O-line. If they go that route, though, I doubt they'd pass in using their 2nd round pick on what QB they want. Might even trade up into the last 1st round to ensure they get their pick.

Hell, they might benefit from drafting 2 QBs this draft.

I think for a 1st overall pick, he means that it's a safe assumption that he will be great. The expectation should be greatness.

Let me put it another way - no other positions are really worthy of the 1st overall pick. Say Dee Millner ends up having a fantastic combine and rockets to near the top of the board - should the Chiefs take him #1? How many more games would they win with another great CB? The Jets have 2 great CBs, and we all know how their season went.

Would take a very solid LT for the next 10 yrs over a Geno Smith type.

Yep.  That's what got the Ravens to win, the Seahawks to comeback, and the 49ers to blow out the Packers.  Solid Left Tackles, not great Quarterbacks.

None of those qbs were high Draft picks,  btw.

I like drafting a tackle.  The best Chiefs offense we probably ever had was when we had hall-of-famers at LT and RG, future pro-bowlers at C and LG and a guy who was a 10 year NFL starter at LT.

I don't really like any option at #1 other than trading down, but if we can't do that, I think we need to take Joeckel.  Geno Smith will not be a great NFL QB, he might be decent, but he won't be great.
:adios:
