Been a weird couple of days. Monday afternoon my next door neighbor commited suicide. And just to be clear i'm not attempting to hijack a tragedy, here. I didn't know her, pretty sure i never even met her. For the better part of the last 3 years the owner of that unit had just been using it as an Airbnb, and when every week is a revolving door of new faces you kinda stop paying attention to whose coming and going, so it escaped my notice that there were full time renters in there since June.

I guess i'm just sitting here in this bizarre headspace. I was working from home Monday, and its strange to know that just a few feet away from me on the other side of the wall a person was intentionally making a choice to end their life. I have no idea what room she was in, but its plausible that she was literally less than 10 feet away from me, just on the other side of the wall...swallowing some pills or tightening a noose, perhaps. I don't know the details, just that when i went to go pick up my daughter at daycare it was a seemingly normal day, and then by the time we finished eating dinner and went outside to go to the playground there were cop cars blocking the street. And they were still there when we got home from the playground. And well into the night. And then the next day a van for a company that specializes in crime scene cleanup was parked out front for several hours. I didn't see the bodybag get taken away, which I'm grateful for that. But seeing the faces of her roommates sitting on the driveway talking to the police...I'm not sure i'll ever forget those faces.

Aside from being in the hospital waiting room when our family decided to take my grandma off life support, i'm pretty sure i've never been in such close proximity to somebody's life ending.

Again, not trying to make this about me, its just sort of a surreal thing to think about and its been bouncing around in my brain the last couple days. felt like deep thoughts material. she was only in her mid 20s. Its difficult for me to wrap my brain around the idea that life is so miserable that death is the preferred alternative. Like i said i didn't know her. No idea what she was going through.  One of her roommates was her sister. Can't imagine what that must be like, getting home to find your dead sibling. I wouldn't blame her if she never wanted to set foot in that house again.

Anyway, life is a delicate thing. check in on each other from time to time.

That does sound like an odd situation to be in. A few years ago I was made aware that my neighbor was missing by an officer doing a wellness check. About a week later his body and truck were found in some lake outside kc. He was an alcoholic and the prevailing thought was he passed out in his truck and the truck rolled into the lake but I always wondered if it was maybe intentional. He also had a problem with his parking brake and had to use a cinderblock to chock the wheels after it rolled down the driveway and through his garage one night so it probably was just the passed out scenario.

My gf went through a similar (though physically further apart) scenario a few months back while she was staying at my place and I was gone. There was a person on our floor who died during the night, though not ruled a suicide it was definitely tragic and also kinda gives you an awkward feeling being near the presence of someone dying like that. It definitely was awkward for a bit for her on it. So understand the feeling/proximity of said feeling

Before getting sick I was empathetic but not nearly as much as I am now for others going through things. I know first hand how life can be taken away from you, and a lot of people that have HS do consider suicide because of the physical/emotional/everything pain that you go through. I know I have a second chance at life going through what I did and I often reflect on life itself too. I make sure and check on people and tell them what I am feeling, even if it's not a normal thing to do in society today. You really never know what others are going through and I have so much more empathy for others going through stuff now. Anyways my point is I know where you're coming from thinking about all of this stuff.

I always tell my wife and kids that you never have any idea what people are going through/thinking. Sure, some people are just rough ridin' assholes and cut you off in traffic, but before you yell or flip them off, just think of what may be going on with them and how they might retaliate or whatever. Maybe someone in their family is sick or they just got awful news and were distracted. That doesn't excuse it, but just something to think about. Not to further hijack, but just this week there was an article I saw where a company that makes suicide pods in (maybe Norway) are under investigation after the first use. The interesting part is that the first person to do it wasn't from Europe or wherever, she was a fairly young lady from the US that had severe medical issues that caused her intense pain. That is just an awful thing to think about and I totally get her response. Again, you never really know what people are going through or are even thinking about at any particular moment. Be well everyone.

right turn on red should be illegal. Driving is New York is absolutely insane but they are absolutely right to ban right turn on red (and it is mostly followed). when I leave new york I'm blown away by how many dangerous situations are caused by right turns on red.

absolutely. there are a few intersections that have been turned to no right on red near where i live, with mixed results of people abiding.
i will say the recent (in KC at least) change to showing the white crosswalk signal about 5 seconds before the light turns green has been very helpful. this allows pedestrians to start crossing the street before cars can turn. otherwise you are asking pedestrians to walk directly in front of moving vehicles and hope the driver sees them.

Birds really do look like little dinosaurs, and must have evolved from dinosaurs.

Birds generally taste pretty good compared to mammalian wild game.  And larger birds appeal to more people’s tastes than smaller birds.

Would really big dinosaurs have been the best tasting? Brontosaurus loin meat that was adjacent to a fatty area may have been the best thing ever.

You ever wonder if your perspective on something is completely wrong? Like the odds of being completely wrong on something is probably high. So if that probability is high, what am I wrong about? I’m pretty sure I’m looking at something or feeling something completely wrong & I have no idea what it is.

The other evening I called a coworker to make sure he did something or if I needed to do it right then.It was a short convo. Mrs Hamburg overheard it. She just said “you’re so weird”. I had no idea what she meant. She just said “you have no idea what you sound like on the phone. You convey the smallest amount of info possible, then just say OK & hang up. We all know you don’t mean to be rude, but you’re so weird.” Like what else is completely different than what I’m perceiving?

I dunno about you guys, but I think lots of deep thoughts. Figured I would create a thread for others to share their deep thoughts, as well as giving others the opportunity to reflect and hopefully learn something.

I’ll get started with a topical one:
I wonder how many women flashed their boobs at mardis gras before everyone was like “yes this is just part of the celebration”

I guess that could apply to many instances of being the first person to do something. Like I bet the first guy to milk a cow, everybody probably thought that dude was a pervert.

Going back to the original intent of the thread. I have this thought with ties in the workplace. Like I used to see pictures of guys at the office in the 90s all wearing ties. When I started working in 2007 no one wore ties. Now that I’m 40, I realize nothing has changed like that in my career, but that’s the same time period as 90-07. But you can’t gradually phase out a tie. Either you’re wearing one or you’re not. How did that group transition start & how long did it take to complete?

Also, I have no recollection of reading this thread. I read the first page & have decided to save the rest of the thread for when I can eat an edible & read it. You’ll all know because I’ll add 2 pages of quoting posts with my thoughts. I’m looking forward to this.

I work with a company that required ties well into the 2010's (maybe even 2020's) but ended the policy after their long time weirdo CEO died. They're still overdressed relative to their peer companies but still.

Football related, but I think about this a lot. If a team trails by 9 or 10 late in a game, they waste time going for a touchdown when they are in easy field goal range. Just kick the field goal as soon as you're close enough, to save time!

but what is close enough?  (i agree with you btw)

on a similar topic, if a team trails by 15 say in the fourth quarter, and will need 2 touchdowns with one 2 pt conversion to tie, coaches always on the first touchdown kick the extra point in order to keep the game a one possession game.  you will have to make the 2 pt conversion at some point regardless, so you should go for the 2 pt conversion on the first touchdown, that way if you miss it you can change how you play the rest of the game with time left to try and do something about it.

It’s a shame the most popular vampire is Count Dracula because everybody thinks vampires live in castles. Dracula lived in a castle because he was a Count.

If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.
