If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

Reminds me of Roy Williams. I well remember the 1989-90 KU season, when the Hawks were unranked to start the year and had a longtime assistant coach new to their program (Roy was in his second season). The Hawks didn't have much talent that year but took off, jumped into the top 5, and it was obvious to me (and everyone) that Roy was the real deal. The game when they put 150 on Kentucky that season feels similar to the 116 we put on Texas.

That KU team got to #1 in the country but didn't win the conference (the Big 8 was loaded that year) and lost in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Played out of their minds and over their ability all year, but didn't have the horses yet to finish. All seems very familiar. And exciting for the future.

Just to follow up on the parallels between Roy Williams (1990 KU) and Tang (2023 KSU):

Conference Comparison
Don't know which conference was better: 1989-90 Big Eight or 2022-23 Big XII, but both were amazing. The Big XII this year was arguably tougher in that it was deeper, but the 89-90 conference was pretty good. For example, here are the #1 teams in the country in the 89-90 AP Poll from week 8 to the final poll (week 17):
  • Week 8: #1 KU (15-0)
  • Week 9: #1 KU
  • Week 10: #1 MU (17-1)
  • Week 11: #1 MU
  • Week 12: #1 MU
  • Week 13: #1 KU
  • Week 14: #1 MU
  • Week 15: #1 KU
  • Week 16: #1 OU
  • Week 17: #1 OU
Team Comparison

2023 KSU
  • conference finish: 3rd
  • NCAA finish: Elite Eight
  • preseason AP rank: unranked
  • highest AP rank: 5
  • final AP rank: TBD -- top 10
  • final record: 26-10 (11-7)
  • Key players (awards): Markquis Nowell (All-Conf, 3rd team AA)
  • Key players (awards): Keyontae Johnson (All-Conf, 3rd team AA)
1990 KU
  • conference finish: 3rd
  • NCAA finish: Rd of 32
  • preseason AP rank: unranked
  • highest AP rank: 1
  • final AP rank: 5
  • final record: 30-5 (11-3)
  • Key players (awards): Kevin Pritchard (All-Conf, hon. mention AA)
  • Key players (awards): Mark Randall (2d team All-Conf)

Roy had a better record and got to #1 during the season but he was also in his second season with the team and his roster, and had only gone 19-12 in his first year at KU. And Tang got KSU further in the tourney. Anyway, some real parallels between the two years (and perhaps the coaches abilities).

He seems to me to be a guy who is very sure of he is and who he wants to be.
that’s a good way of describing him
Exactly.  I don't really know the best way to describe it, but he's got that thing where he's just got a magnetic personality.  He's got a ton of confidence, but remains mostly lighthearted, and what's more, you just believe that he's 100% genuine in everything he does...I just don't get the sense that he is ever really playing for some ulterior motive.  Which seems pretty rare in the broadly shady world of CBB.

Maybe it's as simple as what Bread said -- he believe he knows what it is to be a "good man" and he makes a conscious and public effort to do what it takes to become one.  Maybe that's the magnetic element.  Regardless, I really like having him (as a person) as our head coach.  That he appears to be a very, very good basketball coach is the cherry on top.

It wouldn't hurt to share some of that good fortune with the players.  I'm sure they would enjoy a portion of the millions given to the coaching staff since they're the reason for the hur hur "pay coaches" banter.

Roy's first year KU team was ineligible for the tourney because of Larry Brown's sins.

Also included 4 future NBA players.

Filter some video/news searches for Tang before 2022. He's been the same man with the same phrases for a long time. Not knocking. He's just been that dude for a while now.

I've been impressed with Tang's hustle.  He'll do anything at the drop of a hat if he thinks it'll move the program in a positive direction.  From the wabash after games to visiting students/fans to manning the omelet station at the team hotel, he's had boundless energy.  I'm curious to see if that is a first-year thing or if he can maintain that year after year.

I would think at least a mil.  Below is from a newspaper about a month ago.

Big 12 Conference coaching salaries
Bill Self, Kansas $5.9 million
Chris Beard (former Texas) $5.0
Bob Huggins, West Virginia $4.2 million
Scott Drew, Baylor $3.7 million
Jamie Dixon, TCU, $3.5 million
Mark Adams, Texas Tech $3.1 million
Mike Boynton, Oklahoma State $3.0 million
Porter Moser, Oklahoma $2.8 million
Jerome Tang, Kansas State, $2.1 million
T.J. Otzelberger, Iowa State $2.0 million

I doubt the accuracy on Drew’s number, it has to be closer to Self than Dixon

Both Dixon and Drew's numbers should be questioned, those schools don't have to disclose.

I'm no Gene, but if I was Gene (LOL, I could never be Gene) I'd offer Tang $4M per year.
