it's weird how much buildup there is just for it to maybe be all over for us in like a week

nah, need a result against England though. We should be fine with a win and a draw. Goal differential between Wales and the USA against Iran might be worth watching.

we aren't getting a result against england and then we are going to be confronted with needing to score a bunch against iran and england being ambivalent about winning against wales.

You think England is going to be ambivalent about beating Wales? Ain't no way, man.

I don't understand y'all being sore about a draw against Wales if you think they are good enough to get a result against England but we aren't. Doesn't that indicate they are better than us and a draw was a positive result?

That's why I am where I'm at. A win makes us moving on while not a for sure thing but a highly likely thing, a draw basically mean we have to draw at least England and beat Iran by potentially some goals. I just don't like that

Wales are in the exact same spot tho but they don't play with the ball and rarely score more than one goal.

dumb guy soccer question:

why when the ball goes out of bounds do both teams just raise their hands? At least in American sports you point in the direction you think the ball should go

I think the players are trying to point toward their direction.

Not since Sir Alex Ferguson retired have I seen matches with this much added time as the games in this WC.

I'm not sure.  Two of those German players may be calling for a foul or handball or just confused about which direction they're going.

yeah in that situation the attacking players are calling for a corner and the defending players are calling for a goal kick

Wow.  It seemed like Germany dominated 90% of the game.  Hard to win in the WC by scoring just 1 goal though.

Also, in that situation, one side could be pointing to the corner for a corner kick and the other side could point to the goal for a goal kick, although I don't think that's what's happening there.

I kind of felt Argentina was a little over-rated going into the WC but yeah it was much bigger of an upset.

I suppose Japan could have been calling for offside too

Probably just throw their hands up to say it should be their ball and don't bother to figure out a direction.

I have a real dilemma as to whether to watch this next match with or without sound.  I love Ian Darke but I can't stand Landon Donovan.

yeah I've always taken it "whenever goes our way" hand raise so see why those watching less soccer would be confused.

They're raising their hand to mimick the assistant referee raising his/her flag. It's also what an AR would do if there were no flags. Players will do this to call for the ball to be called out, asking for offside, or for a foul call.

This was actually a point of contention in our game. On the play that Bale drew the foul in the box, it appeared the ball went out of bounds right before. Robinson "Jedi" raised his hand, wanting the ball to be called out, it wasn't, then Zimmerman went Pat Bev on Bale
