Quote from: michigancat on July 14, 2024, 05:47:49 PMWhile it is fascinating to speculate whether the shooter was right or left wing or how the cops let him get on the roof or how the Republicans are now very concerned with fiery language, this is really about being a country where we think it's important to have weapons like AR-15s for any citizen that wants one.I mean, the best security detail in the world doesn't equal enough "good guys with guns" to keep a person safe in this country.

Quote from: Pete on July 15, 2024, 08:44:15 AMI really hope and pray (seriously) that Trump uses this moment and his second term to bring more voters to his side by focusing less on scare tactics and demonizing and more on touting how everyone could benefit from a given policy. For example, would love to see what he could do if he felt like he didn’t need to pander at all to the religious far right. Is it too much to ask for him to be more like George Bush senior and less like Rush Limbaugh in his second term? This is an impossible ask. Every time Trump has been given the opportunity to do better he has degenerated into a shittier and more divisive person. I have zero hope that this this will make him less terrible.

Is his psyche capable of change if he no longer needs the votes from the religious right? Or, ironically, will he necessarily turn on the religious right once he no longer needs them because that’s what he does?

I don't think he cares deep down about any of the culture war stuff so I could see him ignoring it if he wasn't planning to campaign again. I'm not 100% sure he is done campaigning if he wins in November. I think he really likes campaigning and I could see him coming up with something about how he is eligible for another term because his two terms weren't consecutive or the first term was continually undermined by "left wing Deep State Animals" or some such.

I think it's also worth considering that the Secret Service isn't a group of superheroes just because they wear suits and sunglasses and earpieces and look stern all the time. they're just men (and women) who frankly will never be perfect

At least in that setting. It's pretty mind boggling that a guy in that setting was able to get off that shot.
Guns don't kill people, liberals failure to completely lock down sniper positions DEI does

If anything I'm more surprised this hasn't happened more often given the possible logistics complexity.
Of course he's also turned damn near everything into culture war stuff
Am I wrong to thing that the assassination attempt puts the move to replace Sleepy Joe on ice for now?
