The more I learn about the Abrams the more I think it will have almost zero effect on the war other than being a signal to Ukraine that we are behind them.

It runs on rough ridin' jet fuel, 3 gallons of jet fuel every mile so you need a fuel depot basically to travel with it. Also instead of repairing a diesel engine like all the tanks currently being used in Ukraine, it is a turbine. I just don’t see how that would be useful at all.

I don’t know enough to know for sure if A-10’s would be useful in Ukraine, but they sure as crap had stingers fired at them in Afghanistan long after the plane had been labeled obsolete. What is the big gripe being given?

i believe the abrams can run on multiple fuels but it doesn't really matter.  30 isn't enough to matter and they aren't going to be delivered for a year.  it was completely a political gesture (and maybe to start ukraine off into longer term partnering with poland on tank stuff, cause poland is buying a bunch of abrams and it makes sense for them to both be using the same system).

the gripe on a10s is that they're slow and stupid and would get their ass kicked by the russian air defense systems.

the usual "worthless without air superiority" thing?

the russians would knock them from the sky faster than we could deliver them.
Yeah I think pilots in general is a big problem for Ukraine so drones seem better in every way on cost and effectiveness anyway, but the a 10 does not have this problem with US military taking out air defense.

The US has massive support elements built around its armored units.  But everybody is getting chubbed up and the pork barrel spending machine gets an infusion as 1000’s of tanks sit idle.

good thread putting the current situation in perspective.  russia seems to have stepped up their attacks and are pushing ukraine back on all fronts, but it's not clear to me if this is the start of an offensive or what.

Hopefully Sweden fills a bunch of planes full of aid and gets some wire transfers all queued up and says “your move, Turkey.”

Seymour Hersh - Once a ProgLib hero fighting against the injustice and lies of the United States government

Now - an enemy of #blueanonneocon and conspiracy theorist.

Does anyone actually believe that the United States did not blow up the pipeline?

I think Sy Hersh is great. I don’t know that he has any really compelling evidence here, but I think it is another data point against the theory Russia did it. I don’t have a position on who did it and see reasons for why both sides would do it.

I don't think he has anything  that people who tracked the naval exercise and movement of U.S. Navy ships capable of launching such an operation hadn't already hit upon months ago.

His biggest story of the past 20 years was about how bin Laden was killed so I don’t think so.

The Killing of Osama Bin Laden by Sy Hersh:

The opening lines read like pure denialism -

A bunch of #blueanoners got all  :curse: :curse: :curse: (as expected) because Hersh questioned the post Bin Laden raid narrative and the claims that the Pakistani ISI were not involved and had no knowledge.

The #blueanon media usuals just lost their mind (as usual and as expected), yet offered nothing in depth to refute his claims.

do you think assad has used chemical weapons against the opposition forces in the syrian civil war and the syrian people?

Who knows sys, what I do know is that Russia and entities from the French other European governments attempted to negotiate a peaceful stepping down process for Assad and the United States and the other usuals rejected it.  Just as the former Israeli PM asserts that peace in Ukraine was turned down by the U.S. and the usuals.  All non derps know that Zelensky wanted to negotiate right out of the gate.

Now the U.S. is lying out of its ass relative to aid to Syria for the earthquake.

The U.S. has laid ruin or helped lay ruin to Iraq, Libya and Syria and points beyond.

Common ground!

I think we agree on all of this.  I think Assad used chemical weapons.
