gottlieb doing his talking a billion miles an hour thing right now and some stuff that has me horned from it:

- In Sep the Gov will have research data showing doses of Moderna/Pfizer (maybe other non MRNA types?) can be mixed and matched at will and it is actually good
- Also in Sep the Gov will have data showing the positive performance of the lower dose Moderna booster (50 mcg?)
- 8 months for the booster was no magic number but it works because they anticipate the above and it's also before the hard winter. 6, 8, etc. months doesn't really matter in his opinion. Booster should be very, very beneficial for everyone.
- Data showing the small window between the first two doses may have kept some of the immune response down. ie. Pfizer could have gotten a bigger immune response at 21 days instead of 14. Lesson learned there.

Now you have me leaning towards hermit’n for another month until I can easily add a moderna ‘chip to my pfizer system. I can easily go get another pfizer now.

if you think a cloth mask is doing much of anything for you that’d be incorrect

what is your middle ground source for this conclusion?
N95's are now readily available again.
are surgical masks better than cloth?

Everything I’ve read says they are roughly equal but generally better because “cloth” is a big broad term. Also everything I’ve read is that if you have 80%+ compliance with any type of mask the transmission is dramatically decreased. I’ve been waiting for yla to post the cloth masks don’t work data.

I live in DFW and we currently have an abundance of vaccines (smh). I can login and schedule an appointment for this afternoon and get a Moderna booster (already had 2 asap), no questions asked. I'm typically a rule follower, so I'm on the fence. I kind of feel like if people don't want the readily available vaccine, why shouldn't I go get a booster before the others clog up appointments once they're forced to? Thoughts?

yla I'm not real sure what you're trying to argue for here but it doesn't seem very "middle of the road"!

They're worthless and only useful in a highly transient "just passing through" situation.  Any type of sustained situation renders cloth masks completely useless.   But people feel better about themselves I suppose.

correctly worn and appropriate masks are efficient. cloth masks are not

I don't know yla, there seems to be a lot of research supporting them, and even the study you posted vaguely supports them having some effectiveness. obviously an n95 is best but I think they have some value, at least that's what the majority of what I see is showing and what my main man Gottlieb says. obviously for them to work everyone has to wear them. you aren't going to help yourself much (though could help others!) if you are the only one wearing one.

yeah i think if you're vaccinated, the practical difference between wearing a cloth mask vs. no mask is probably pretty darn marginal, but still "helpful" nonetheless.

sidebar: i know a shitload of people who have had "breakthrough" cases.  not really as rare as i originally expected them to be.

oh, another thing gottlieb said this morning was that there was a lot of noise out there that the delta was causing worse reactions and hospitalizations for children. he said that while the research hadn't been done his feeling was that the delta is just infecting a tremendous number of children where the alpha didn't and not that it's more deadly if they catch it than the alpha was. not sure if that's good or bad but it made me feel better re. my kids anyway if they caught it.

yeah. I'd encourage anyone with "the sniffles" to get tested and isolate! I know of a few breakthrough cases where folks thought they had allergies or were bothered by wildfire smoke/asthma.

I also think we're in an entirely different world than when those initial efficacy numbers were determined. Delta aside, there's a lot more travel and gyms and large crowds than there were in late 2020.

Right. Delta or not, the spike in US cases has also correlated pretty positively with stuff opening back up and people going about their lives business as usual.

yes and it bears pointing out that none of the breakthroughs i know of have ended up in the hospital or anything.

I added a vaccinated button to my travel backpack so I feel like I've went above and beyond.
