I looked up KC data to compare to California counties and LOL @ setting up criteria for reopening schools and just not following them, at all.

Hope you are right and it happens. I just don't put as much faith in restricting indoor dining as the magic bullet.  Every study seems to say it's happening in houses and private gatherings.

there isn't a "magic bullet", it's a little bit of everything. this illustrates it pretty well

https://twitter.com/NAChristakis/status/1315286236907667456

I also don't necessarily have an issue with indoor dining and churches reopening - I just don't think it should come before schools. And I don't know what studies you're referring to -there's been plenty of documented outbreaks in bars and gyms (not too many in restaurants that I know of other than one in Germany).

I think you’re both basically saying the same thing. We can probably all agree that more restrictions will mean less positive cases, and that as those restrictions are lifted you’ll see more positive cases.

Without a more structural measure like contact tracing, I don’t see how reopening (even gradually) would do anything other than increase cases.

contact tracing is in place, it's just a lot more manageable when you have a shitload of testing capacity and few positive cases. I'm pretty sure that's why everything moves so gradually here, health officials want to make sure they don't see anything change negatively before taking the next step.

World throwing everything at this and the best we have a year later is uhhh close the bars I guess.

Smart people get it together.

France adds 30K new cases today.

The restrictions in place:  A curfew from 9pm until 6am  :jerk: in Paris and a few other cities  :jerk:

The UK:  No mixing of families in pubs and restaurants  :jerk:  No outdoor gatherings of more than 6   :jerk:   Population advised not to use public transit  :jerk:  (insert picture of masses crowding into the tube here)

I’m optimistic about the monoclonal antibodies treatments

yeah, just two data points, but they do create an impression.

plus, they should work.  i mean, they're antibodies.

Merkel, while noting the "exponential growth" of the virus in Germany (just set a new daily record) discussed bars closing at 11 in hotspot areas and limits to gatherings in hotspot areas.

But hey, the rest of the world is going "all in" to stop the virus.

Who can argue with the positive outcomes of 18 months of remote learning.   I'm sure the children will be straight up to speed with no issues.  (In AL the 0-24 mortality rate is .2%)

Free and reduced lunch can easily do their much needed job on a drive thru basis for 12 to 18 months.  Pre and post school programs for kids in need . . . eff'em.   Special Ed students . . . eff'em.

Unsupervised children at home alone in working class households, not a problem.   They can fend for themselves and their diligence to being online and doing their school work will no doubt be exemplary.

Let's just continue to smack down a whole generation over a virus that has an overall mortality rate that's plummeting (barely even detectable in that age group) and in most areas (if not all at this point) healthcare facilities are no where near capacity.

All the takes on school in this forum are from people living at the absolute pinnacle of first world problems.  I suspect cRusty's Next Door app reads like a whose-who of individual families and small groups looking to hire private teachers.

400K new Rona cases across the globe in twenty four hours, but the rest of the world is going "all in" to stop SARS-Covid-19 by closing down bars at 11 and advising people to not jam into subway trains.

In parts of the country where they already struggle with drop outs, school officials are terrified of what may lie ahead.

In 2009 with the Swine Flu, which killed several thousand school aged children.   The only time schools were shut down was when they ran out of teachers and substitutes because of the flu.   Otherwise they just kept right on going.

I thought your schools were open and having no issues???

I have one kid that's doing ok and one struggling but it sucks all around. It's tricky because they're splitting the school year into semesters so one has a pretty rough schedule and the other's is pretty pud.

all these "waves" are just different regions getting hit hard at different times. First "wave" was the north east, second was AZ and FL, now it's the upper midwest.

Hybrid model was deployed after they'd announced full opening. Half the kids in class Monday and Tuesday. Half in class Thursday and Friday. Wednesday is remote for all. School cleaning day.
