702 deaths today -- down about 75 compared to last Wednesday. 7 day average continues a steady drop now at 563.

I keep waiting on the other shoe to drop on the death slope -- Thankfully it hasn't come yet.  Hopefully it doesn't.

somewhere I saw June 28 as the predicted date they'd start to come back up based on a longer lag in deaths than we saw earlier. (I'd expect it takes even longer because I would imagine increased testing increases the death lag as well, but not sure if that was taken into consideration.)

I don't know.  It's tough to make sense of.  Deaths just haven't really tracked reported cases for a while. Over the last two months, at various points, we've seen reported cases drop, and rise, and stay more or less stagnant.  Meanwhile deaths have continued to (almost exclusively) steadily drop.  I presume we'll see an uptick at some point (and quite possibly on 6/28), but I'm hesitant to put much faith in deaths being a direct function of reported cases.  Otherwise, in a couple of weeks, the death average is going to have to basically increase 4 fold back to April levels.

Either these reported cases don't share the same significance as April's reported cases, or we're going to have an absolutely bonkers july.

i thought we'd flatten out last week, and obviously we didn't.  it does look like the inflection point is going to come pretty soon, but we'll see.

Welp, a week and a half after transitioning from mandatory WFH to voluntary (but encouraged) WFH, my office is going back to mandatory WFH. Anyone else?

I have another 2 months before I even have a chance of voluntary WFH. We are in week 4 of voluntary WFH for some. I think we will go back to mandatory WFH before I even have a chance of going back.

I'd rather it be mandatory but I'll take it!

And really I've given up hope of anything but a vaccine in the US.

We’ve flattened the daily death curve. hopefully our improvements in treating it will keep it from going too high.

this is really awful to say, but if a place like Arizona or a redder state became a real NY-or-worse disaster, it might force people at the federal level to get serious about stopping the virus without waiting on a vaccine. People would realize it isn't caused by subways and it can happen in a non-dense setting and might think masks aren't an invention of satan. It might be horrifying in the short term but lead to fewer deaths overall and honestly open the economy sooner. But if I'm being honest, we still probably wouldn't do anything considering the current response to wearing masks.

I didn't think we'd see anything like NY again, but Arizona might prove me wrong.

Raise your hand if you thought there weren't thousands upon thousands of asymptomatic people walking around out there.

Outside of a small island nation who out there has "stopped" the virus?

I suppose the countries that don't actually report all their cases or don't/can't report their cases have "stopped" the virus, who else has stopped it?   Not the Germans, not the EU, not the UK or the Russians or the Chinese . . . many EU countries are just now cracking the door on re-opening.   Same with the UK.

Grumblings that Arizona is counting repeat tests to already confirmed positives in the hospital as "new cases."

what argument are you trying to make here?

I'll concede "stopping" isn't the perfect word, but cases are far, far more manageable in the EU, East Asia (you can exclude China) and Australia/NZ and life is closer to normal in those places. I don't know how you can argue that even if you question their data.

What exactly isn't being managed here?

Again, they've barely cracked the door on re-opening in Europe.

The fact that you keep bringing NZ into the equation is just  . . . it's an Island nation of 5 million people, they can shut down their whole country in 10 minutes, in fact they did, and the world economy didn't even notice.
