Honestly overall I am optimistic.  That said my disappointment since late April is directly on governors/mayors opening up faster than even the federal guidance says and citizens who are protesting in the streets about wearing masks / not opening up fast enough and thinking this is all fake and not taking this seriously.
How many times are you going to start your posts with “Overall, I’m optimistic”! Before laying into people that you’re mad at for this pandemic continuing on, because they’re not following protocol? Because you can’t go on vacation soon?

Japan makes no sense
Yeah.  God knows what the Japan result is all about.

That interactive chart is really cool.  I wish there was something like that for states.

I honestly wasn’t that bad last night, guys. See the treating your body like a trash can thread. I Just get annoyed at times by the usual characters talking crap on the U.S. during the pandemic and why people suck, but also taking the time to reason why other countries are “doing better “, not really knowing anything about their situations or if the numbers are real. It’s Just getting annoying.
Especially when we're really doing so great! USA #1!
I don't think I did any of that stuff that you're tired of but I also had a great cinqo so cheers.

Japan is an interesting outlier worth deeper examination. If you think that this is all a hoax or the American shutdown isn't worth it or necessary, Japan could be used as a data point to support your case.

I 100% don’t think it’s a hoax. I think Asia’s numbers are a bit manipulated tho. I was more responding to ppl last night that think the USA is going to crap, but thinking Asian Countries data makes sense and “here’s why it does...”. Lib gE guys mainly. Happy you’re safe and doing well.

it is a genuinely weird thing that wealthier countries have tended to do poorly with this virus and poorer countries have tended to do well.  there are lots of other confounding variables, but it's still striking and not at all something i would have predicted

there's absolutely no reason to think that the numbers (it matters here if you're talking cases, deaths or both) of asian countries are less reliable than those of other regions.  on the whole, they're probably a good bit more accurate that western europe's.

Unknown effects/alt facts of weakening your immune system through mask wearing and right to choice is certainly something I didn't expect.

Has it been mentioned that the pro choice/pro life divide has completely inverted in this scenario?

Yes, very weird. Except for (most) libertarians, who are pro-choice, pro-choice.

I've been tracking Idaho (family there) and they are a really odd case. Idaho was very minimally impacted in the early stages, trailing Kansas somewhat significantly in cases and deaths. Then they shot past KS for a bit, before their curve really started bending.

What are they doing? I dunno. The state's citizens are as backwoods, and "Live free or die" as it gets. They were late to enact any measures as well. Idaho is also generally very poor and not very highly educated.

Kansas as comparison below:

Rich countries travel more, right? In every sense. Seems like that could accelerate spread by a lot.

yeah, that's definitely part of it.  rich countries generally got hit earlier (and presumably also with more seeding events).  early outbreaks generally in cities that are major air transit hubs.

poorer non-asian countries that might have been inclined to ignore china, as north america and western europe did, had the benefit of seeing additional warning casesin countries seen as more transparent.

Or maybe they're unwilling or unable to test and report. Remember Russia's early numbers?

I think it's more an East vs. West divide than rich vs. poor or amount of travel. Hong Kong, Seoul, Bangkok, and Singapore have airports with more international passenger traffic than any airport in the US. It's been rehashed a lot but they're better prepared in East Asia because of SARS and MERS.

I also think the West thinks technology or good old fashioned ingenuity is required to save them: see the US shutting down quarantine sites because they though we had solved infectious diseases and the leading discussion regarding contact tracing in the US involves google and Apple instead of hiring a bunch of out of work bartenders to hit the phones. Also, obviously the western societies are generally more individualistic.

I saw a good quote from a leader in Austria or something to the effect of smaller countries need to look around and see what works rather than thinking they need to blaze their own unique trail.

there's clearly an asia vs everywhere else component, but eastern europe has also done very well.  some african countries seem to have effective measures in place.  but really, i don't know what most african countries are doing.

jury is still out a bit on latin america, imo.  brazil and mexico seem to be heating up.

most countries' case numbers are crap, but not because they're manipulating data, just few places have tested enough to catch more than a small fraction of cases.

russia is probably the country whose numbers i've least believed, but now all of a sudden they're reporting large numbers of cases and some deaths.  maybe they really didn't have much of an outbreak until recently.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but the only country that overcame a large outbreak is China.  The rest have achieved success by stopping the outbreak before it ever got started which is a lot fuckn harder to accomplish in a country like ours.
