china closed all theaters again. so, it's probably out of control there. sounds like they may just be planning to give up and let it burn through the population and not talk about it. the russian plan.

if covid19 was out of control in china, we'd know.  all of the conspiracy theories re. china is mostly a reluctance to admit that east asian countries are handling this so much better than are european countries and the united states.

I was trying to find some factual reporting on this topic. Didn't find much other than China likely is under reporting deaths and cases (shifting them to the flu or some other cause), but on a smaller percentage scale not some massive cover up.

They must have been doing some heavy isolation early on though to prevent spread to other mega cities.

I could definitely see china having somewhere between 20,000 - 40,000 deaths, but not nearly as many as some of the more extreme numbers I've heard (20 million).

A lot of people are about to lose their homes over this too and we’ll swing into the greatest depression of our lifetime. Sucks all away around. Praying for all of you guys out there. Has to be a bad time for people going through divorce, entertainment, small countries depending on tourism, etc. We’ve just hit the tip of the iceberg on this thing. This will probably go way past the fall and that stimulus check for many, will be meaningless.

Also, I think they’re going to go off 2018 taxes to decide who gets what, but kinda crazy that if you’ve had a kid since then you won’t be accounted for them by the governments eyes. Happily, we’re not in a position that’s depending on that, but many others are.

I was hit up by my Director and CEO on Friday via text saying they absolutely want me back when this thing settles down and that Doctors who own their own practices will be jumping to “us” and we’ll be busy as hell. “Hang in there! You’re needed soon!”. What do you even do with that?

Nvrmind. Cuomo should be arrested like rn.  He clearly doesn’t understand how to stop the spread of this virus.

if covid19 was out of control in china, we'd know.  all of the conspiracy theories re. china is mostly a reluctance to admit that east asian countries are handling this so much better than are european countries and the united states.

Or people have a grasp of basic math and probability. I don't know about twitter conspiracies but I don't compare China's numbers to the United States numbers when observing that they're obviously lying about their numbers. Look at the Italian timeframe, we know for a fact that China didn't act as quickly, the couldn't. We also know that if it got to Shanghai and Beijing before they instituted a lockdown their numbers don't make sense, unless you think the CDC and WHO are wrong about how easily the disease spreads.

I think South Korea is telling the truth. They have no incentive to lie and their government doesn't have a history of doing so with regard to this virus or otherwise.

Timeline:

Jan. 31: Italy suspends flights to China and declares a national emergency after two cases are confirmed in Rome (2 confirmed cases).
Feb. 20: A man in Lombardy tests positive after previously leaving the hospital without a test. He is believed to have spread the disease widely before developing severe symptoms (3 cases).
Feb. 23: Small towns hit by the outbreak are placed under quarantine. Carnival celebrations and some soccer matches are canceled (150 cases).
March 4: Schools and universities are closed (3,089 cases).
March 8: Several northern provinces are placed under lockdown (7,375 cases).
March 9: The lockdown is extended nationwide (9,172 cases).
March 11: All restaurants and bars are closed (12,462 cases).
March 22: Factories are closed and all nonessential production is halted (59,138 cases).

still quite a few industries that need to keep going. For example if you're working for a ventilator manufacturer there's a decent chance a flight so a supplier could speed up production.

there is no generic "the math".  outcomes completely change based on how much humans interact with each other and china instituted a pretty complete shutdown in hubei province in late january.  their reported outcome is consistent with that.  aside from the fact that china isn't behind some iron curtain, we have all sorts of exogenous data (electricty use, traffic data, satellite, factory production, etc) to confirm that they do not have similar shutdowns in other provinces.

as treysolid said, we don't necessarily have a good way to distinguish between 3k dead in wuhan and 30k dead in wuhan, but we have very good data to say that they don't have widespread covid19 transmission across the country as we do in the united states.  maybe they will have in three months, but they don't today and haven't had since the virus emerged.
