I am disappointing in most of your attitudes, you finally got the boomer remover you wanted and now you are trying to shut it down.

Boomer remover is also hilarious to me, every time

I think travel bans are effective because they keep people off of planes. Domestic flights should also be cancelled.

Nah, if the government forces the shut down, the bailout will be that much bigger. I'm good with people just not taking flights.

the airline bailouts make me wonder if airlines should be nationalized. I haven't thought like a ton about the implications obviously, but if they are truly essential (which they obviously are), how critical is the profit motive to airline affordability and success?

we might need a thread for corona economic changes

Airlines are basically already semi-public utilities that routinely operate in the zone of insolvency because they're too important to fail.

a good argument is for local responses to quarantines and stuff. but they should probably have different regions.

Airlines are basically already semi-public utilities that routinely operate in the zone of insolvency because they're too important to fail.

yeah, airlines basically have never consistently made money.

pretty sure all (almost all?) nationalized airlines still operate as for profit enterprises, so i doubt if it would make a ton of difference.

yep. but it's interesting that they can still fail quite often. weird deal, maybe it's a perfect balance. (although the 737 max deal certainly raises questions about whether or not there's a perfect balance)

I know all the US airlines complain about the Middle Eastern Airlines not having to worry about profit because the government subsidizes them.

We have for profit hospitals and prisons (both are making this problem worse).  Airlines aren't getting nationalized.

Because they aren't concerned with maintaining a sufficient capital cushion. They're free to spend all their revenue on virtually whatever they want, including stock buybacks (NOT THAT THERE'S ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT). Then, they voluntarily (or involuntarily) declare bankruptcy and shaft their creditors, knowing they'll be permitted to operate during bankruptcy (because important) and reemerge with fewer liabilities.

you can't shaft creditors before shafting owners.

it's a pet peeve of mine when people talk about bailouts.
