i haven't kept up on all of this, but i think that the pangolin hypothesis has not been supported, but there's a good reason why people were initially throwing it around - zoonotic events frequently involve an intermediate host that facilitates the disease organism adapting an ability to infect additional species beyond the normal host species.
as it turns out, the coronavirus involved in covid 19 can infect a ton of mammalian species including numerous domestic species, so the number of (afaik pretty much untested and maybe untestable) avenues from bat to human seems to me to be very large.
