Fundamentally, I don't love the idea of twitter of FB "fact checking."  They're free to do what they want, their platform, etc., but all else being equal, I'd prefer @jack and Zuckerberg not being in charge of a truth commission.

That is more than fair. It is really funny/interesting though to see it in action.

It’s certainly a shift from their tone during the Russian meddling fallout, though.

Also, the bigger issue here is how they enforce their own policies about hate speech. It’s obvious they don’t want to touch the posts of high profile politicians because they’re scared of financial repercussions, but it’s a bad look when you’re basically willing to police the speech of anyone who isn’t capable of hurting you.

Yeah, I think they opened pandora's box when they entered the curation/censorship game, which again, they're free to do.  But it's a whole can of worms.

I agree.

It's a sticky situation though, letting a world figure use your platform for propaganda (different than normal political spin imo).

And I'm not just talking about trump. Twitter allows a lot of propaganda in the name of "civic interest"

The problem with that is what constitutes "propaganda"?

Well, and a perfectly fine answer to that question might be "propaganda is whatever twitter/facebook says it is."  Not really objectionable, but that opens the doors to some slippery slope scenarios.

Ideally, the solution would be to not have such gullible consumers of facebook and twitter.

Easy to spot people's deep dark stereotypes by what they choose to amplify on social media.

I don't know where this goes, so I'm dropping it here. Old man yelling (eloquently) at clouds, or the voice of one calling in the wilderness? Either way, really good prose:
