I can't respond every time D2 says some bullshit because it's just too damn much. So, I don't. And I keep earbuds in a lot to help. But because D2 can't ever shut the eff up, he winds up saying things out loud that are not necessarily directed at anyone and not necessarily responded to by anyone. Here are some of them.

"This email looks like a scam."
"Yep. This one is definitely a scam."
"I think I'll see what D1 says about it."
[A few minutes pass]
"YEP! Thought so! D1 says it's a scam."
"I thought that looked like a scam."
"Yep. Scam email."

"Ah, Cream."
"You know Cream? Eric Clapton. Jack oscar."
"Listenin' to a live concert."
"I like rock music. Yeah, I like rock."
[A few hours pass]
"Gotta kick this up a notch. Queensryche."

GG asked for my input on the seating situation. The two of us sat there and brainstormed for a bit. I kept trying to think of a way to say, "let's just kick out D2," but was unsuccessful. So, when we were obviously totally out of ideas, I said, "I'm kinda surprised that D2 is still here - that he hasn't left yet. And the longer he stays, the more I think, 'He's never going to leave.'" After one or two more inconsequential words, we both got up to leave the room. As we exited through the door, GG says, "Who knows? Maybe the situation will take care of itself."

They're about a week away from moving D2 down to the basement and taking away his stapler.

Quick update. We had office furniture people in this morning to look at reconfiguring the workspaces to accommodate five people. It appears D2 is going to survive here for at least a little longer. I think he has allies sticking up for him, telling Owner/CEO that he is actually valuable. I'm sure this situation will make for dumber job stories, but it comes at a cost. Because, man, he is super annoying.

Yesterday, a coworker came in for something and ended up chatting with me, GG, and NG1. She lightheartedly mentioned that she'd been worried all day that she smelled like urine because her baby grandson had peed on her that morning. She joked that she'd been running to the bathroom to wash all day, thinking that she might have caught a whiff of it. In sum, we were chuckling and making innocuous comments about the situation. Then, D2 very loudly and abruptly interjects, "HAR HAR! YOU HAVEN'T SEEN R KELLY AROUND HERE HAVE YOU!? HAR HAR HAR!"

I briefed NG1 on D2's recent role changes. Very general, facts only, no judgments. I neither have an agenda nor want to create drama. Her response was like, "Well, what does he even do, anyway? He's always away from his desk."

D2/NG2 convo

[Blah blah]
NG2: ... I used to be GG's manager at a place we worked years ago. Some people wouldn't want to be in that situation, but it doesn't bother me at all.
D2: Yeah, no one here is like that - letting pride or ego get in the way. It's all about contributing to the team.
NG2: Exactly.
D2: I actually hired GG here, so it's sort of similar. Owner/CEO is who I REALLY report to, though. GG just tells me what she needs help with.
[Blah blah]
D2: So, yeah, I'm helping out GG transition to he new software here. Then, I'll be moving to sales!

Mystery solved! Also, GG still hasn't given D2 any login credentials for the new software. NG1 and NG2 both have theirs.

Also, to clarify, D2 definitely does report to GG. (For now.)
