So I finally decided to watch The Godfather this past weekend.  My wife was out of town so I was bored enough on Saturday to sit for a 3 hour movie.  It was fun to watch after seeing references/parodies in lots of other movies over the years.  It was pretty good.  I'm not one to trash classic movies just to be contrarian and obviously movies lose some impact 50 years after the fact.  I'm sure in the early 70s this film was revolutionary.  One part I didn't get AT ALL was Michael Corleone going to Sicily and getting married after a few days and then she gets blown up never to be mentioned again.  What was the point of that?

Anyway, pretty good movie, too long for me, needed to cut out that Sicily part, I can see why it made such an impact in its time.

Shutting the door in her face?  I don't remember that part.  I remember she was looking through the door at him as those dudes were kissing his hands or whatever.

Yeah, in a 3 hour movie the one thing that seemed rushed was Michael's transformation.  One second he was like a normal dude, going to the movies with his girlfriend, talking about how he was nothing like his family, then the next minute he's shooting 2 dudes in the head.  I guess the attempted murder of your dad could change a person but it just didn't seem that believable.

It's been a long time since I've seen them, but I think if you like part 1, you'll also like part 2. And maybe even like each part better after seeing both.

also the Sicily part served two purposes:

1 - to show the NY mafia knew where he was hiding (the car bomb was meant for him)
2 - to give Tom Hanks the "maunday tuesday tharsday wadnesday" quote from You've Got Mail (1998)

I'd say it also provides the turning point where Michael decides that wiping out the other families is the only path forward and this fully engages his cold-blooded nature.

I think it's probably something that worked a lot better in the book than in the movie.

I just looked up The Godfather Part II.  It's a half hour longer than the original.  :Wha:

1) Michael was in Sicily like 2 or 3 years
2) It showed him returning to the "traditional" way of doing things instead of being a fairly modern American at the start
3) it's the first of many betrayals against Michael

Also 2 like two regular movies cut together as one movie and it doesn't seem so long imo

Listen, I didn't like the Sicily part.  I'm sure to people who are better at watching movies it was good and made sense.

My wife said she would watch Part II with me this weekend even though she hasn't seen Part I.  I'll fill her in on everything (minus the Sicily part) so she should be fine.

that's a crime, _33. it's amazing how watching godfather just once has made you more likely to commit a crime.

And he came THIS close to marrying a nice Italian girl who would have more easily blended in with his family and their lifestyle, and instead he wound up with uppity what's her face.

He DID marry her.  Then she got blown up a few days later. (or weeks or months later?) (YEARS?)

Well, I mean he was THIS close to having a life partner who wouldn't have been a total stick in the mud when it came to a life of coercion and murder.

I made her an offer she couldn't refuse.   ;)

I’ve never seen any of The Godfather movies. Have not even watched five minutes total in my life.

Word on Bathroom Walls. 6/7

Fantastic drama.
