Rishi Sunak - becomes member of Parliament in 2015, gets a prominent appointment in 2018, then gets Liz Truss' job as Treasury Secretary as Boris is being replaced by Liz....then bam party bosses tap him to replace her! He is Prime Minister of the UK. All without a single national election.
Antonio Costa - Two stints as national assemblyman ending in 2004...Became the Mayor of Lisbon for a decade, then one day the party bosses tap him to be the leader of the opposition, which coalesced at the right time to rocket him to PM. He went from Mayor to Prime Minister of Portugal in the blink of an eye.
Leo Varadkar - Gets elected to lower rep in 2007. Holds various strange appoints, including minister of Health, minister of defense, minister of transportation, tourism, &sport, minister of social protection, minister of trade, (there is no way this guy can be competent in EVERY SINGLE FIELD). Then in 2017 he is appointed party head. A coalition government is formed and he is set to rotate in as PM of Ireland while he is functionally #2 behind the PM. He is currently the Prime Minister of Ireland...without even as much as a plurality of voters supporting his party. (They won 21%, and were third in a multiparty election.)
Kamela - Well...she slept with celebrities and got a law degree. Harris stated she would only run for CA AG if the current AG didnt run again. He retired, then Harris magically got endorsed by Boxer, Feinstein, Pelosi, and all the unions. In a 7-way race, she managed 33%, with all the party bosses backing her. She does that job for a time until Boxer retires, and then she is tapped again. She waltzes into the US Senate without breaking a sweat. And serves as a 1-term junior senator until Biden taps her for VP, after an absymal attempt to win the nomination. (Democrat voters did not want her! She failed so bad she withdrew before the first Primary). She is currently one heartbeat away from the presidency, in a chance to be a real-life Selina Meyer (Veep), and may indeed be the 47th POTUS before January 2025.
If you have a hard time figuring out what these all have in common these are the strange ascensions of non-nationally elected Indians, who somehow with party favor, rise to the top of offices of Western nations. There is nothing to see here, just hard-working immigrants or children of immigrants, that somehow gamed the an entrenched political system to their political advantage.

But what about the GOP
Vivek - Well, he is a Harvard/Princeton educated businessman and has no visible evidence of being handpicked by the party. Other than being a flamethrower to establishment candidates, I do not see how that is evidence of him being a "handpicked party candidate" (unless you believe him to be a plant who just happens to campaign against the policies the establishment supports). He might be a similar example. From out of nowhere to 3rd place. Time will tell.
Haley - she has put in plenty of time and experience winning elections, from US Congress to Governor of SC, one could argue her appointment to UN Ambo is proof shes a party-gal. Even this appointment was odd because she was critical of Trump even after he won the SC primary. Her appointment opened up the governorship to someone more competent.
