Landon Donovan was damn near an American hero just for the Algeria goal. Every LSIQ person I know mentions him and David Beckham whenever I get started talking about soccer.

"Oh you follow soccer? How about that Donovan guy!?!?"

I couldn't imagine how popular an American goalscorer would be if it won a World Cup. He'd instantly be plastered all over the country.

If we won the World Cup the star of that team would absolutely be an American hero. When we won the hockey gold medal in '80 hockey was a regional niche sport in this country, pretty similar to what lacrosse is now. The WHA/NHL merger happened less than a year before the Miracle on Ice. Now 33 years later Mike Eruzione is selling his stick and jersey for over a million dollars. The desire for Americans to be the best at everything is strong. Jingoism drives a lot of people in this country. Soccer is the final sports barrier, add to that the potential to beat Euro's and/or Latins, fly over country will eat that story line up.

Cold war, bro. Also we were hosting the Winter Olympics that year because we could support it, we could not support a world cup.

So Brazil's is having to close one of the main stadiums in Rio which was set to host track and field at the Olympics in 2016.  Why this matters imo for soccer is that they are already facing setbacks and funding issues for the reno on the Maracana stadium set to host a lot of the World Cup.

CN: Brazil is a massive cluster eff for construction, hilarity could ensue for soccer and the Olympics.

John Anthony Brooks to choose between USA and Germany "in the coming weeks": http://bit.ly/10LC4PI

Brooks is a very young German American son of an African American soldier similar to Jermaine Jones, Fabian Johnson, Timmy Chandler, and Terrence Boyd. Sounds like he has tons of potential. He's apparently been having a breakout season for Hertha in Bundelsiga 2. He has played for youth squads from both Germany and the US. Most recently Germany, but he has 3 more caps for USA than Germany.

Thoughts on Klinsi injecting all this German blood into USMNT? Should we stop it even though the talent is there? There has been lots of rumors going around about how the Germans are completely segregated from the "real Americans" at USMNT camps. Some think they even are less motivated to play for USA than those who were born here.

I just want to point out that I was thrilled with the squad we fielded against Mexico that all 14 players play or have played in MLS. Nothing against the German Americans.

this is so stupid. take the best players. end subject. there is no reason we shouldn't change our culture regarding soccer. this is the same mentality that has been killing us in the transition currently underway. i saw a quote the other day from a "real american" (anonymous) about how we shouldn't try and play "the beautiful game." that we should approach it like we always have. with grit and determination. how has the worked for us thus far? it's that type of stubbornness that is preventing us from growth. more than that, it's a defeatist attitude.

it should also be noted that this is the non-racist us soccer thread. stop holding on to the cold war, bro.

Getting Germans isn't going to help us play "beautiful game" like you want. Honestly, few teams other than Brazil can really play it that style.

You don't think the fact that some USMNT players can't even speak English isn't even a little dumb?

Btw, I'll take that as a yes, you want Brooks.

"the beautiful game" isn't a singular style. it is a performance of sound strategy throughout all 11 players on the pitch. it doesn't matter whether its a strong counter offense, a controlling midfield, or a defensive stronghold. that is why soccer is called "the beautiful game". Brazil plays incredibly, but so does Germany. So does the Netherlands. So does Argentina. Having players that understand the value of strategic play not only benefits us, but makes us contenders. Why do you think Clint Dempsey is so effective? It most certainly isn't because he plays an "american style".

As far as speaking English: WHO CARES. The language is soccer.

Just because a team is good doesn't mean they play "the beautiful game," dumbass.
