From reading articles, it sounds like the bitcoin mining deal is like playing the lottery.  Any of you guys have any experience with it?  Sounds like a setup costs around $2k or so.
oh more than that and your utility bill will be astronomical. stepbro use to mine btc but now he mines other's

So it is better to just take whatever you were going to invest in that and buy into the currency of choice?

You can get an s9 from bitmain for around 3k . They are sold in batches and delivered about 2 months after paying for one.  If you mine it should be in a pool not on your own.  You can use cryptocompare.com's calculator for a rough estimate of ROI.  The miners are pretty loud and use lots of electricity.  Several factors are cost of electricity in your area, how much hashrate is being dedicated to Bitcoin(difficulty), and how much hash rate your rig has.

The S9 will probably add $1000 a year minimum to your electrical bill.

Sounds like it would eat the same amount of juice as our swimming pool does.

Just to note that's for Bitcoin only, which is the most energy intensive.

How many of these are out here and should I be paying attention to any of them not listed on Coinbase.  Also, is Coinbase the only/best place to buy and sell coins?  So many questions....

Merry Christmas guys. I don’t talk about or post Andreas stuff very often but it’s always great stuff and I follow it closely.

Just to note that's for Bitcoin only, which is the most energy intensive.

Yeah so to expand on this Bitcoin uses the SHA-256 algorithm for mining.  If you read back during the Bcash(Bitcoin Cash) stuff it also uses SHA-256.  So mining pools early on were alternating between the most profitable coin.  Bcash built in basically an emergency switch if x number of blocks weren’t mined in x amount of time it would recalculate to be easier to mine.  Bitcoin automatically recalculates the hash rate difficulty every 2016 blocks, which is about 2 weeks worth of work(goal keeping block creation ~10 min per).

For Bcash mining pools took advantage of this by not mining blocks in the set time.  Then the difficulty would decrease and all hash power would move to Bcash and be mining multiple blocks per minute.  Thus giving the miners more rewards quicker from mining Bcash.  This slowed down the Bitcoin network because all the hash power moved to Bcash.  Once the difficulty increased on Bcash and made it less profitable than Bitcoin all mining switched back to Bitcoin, and the cycle continued.  It’s gotten a little better but miners will always follow the profit.

Charlie(LTC creator) knew early on that you couldn’t just compete for hash power against Bitcoin.  So when he forked the code and created LiteCoin he changed the mining algorithm to Scrypt.  SHA-256 is a very CPU(early on) intensive algorithm(it’s moved to GPU intensive and now almost exclusively ASIC chips) and Scrypt is a very memory intensive algorithm.  So, the reason Charlie did this was so that you could mine both Bitcoin and LiteCoin on the same hardware.

Wonder how long coinbase is going to have bitcoin buying locked down?

So just to clarify, since I was watching during this time.  CoinBase never locked down Bitcoin buying on CoinBase.  They locked down Bcash(Bitcoin Cash) buying because of potential liquidity issues.

Bitcoin and Bcash are not the same thing, nor should they be viewed as equals.  The people pushing Bcash are pushing for the name Bitcoin, not to further the future of a decentralized currency.  They have intentionally used the name ‘Bitcoin Cash’ to confuse and scam people.  The only people promoting or advocating for Bcash are a centralized group of greedy crap stains that don’t understand what Bitcoin was created for originally.

Just wanted to make that clear and concise.

It looks like there are a ton of alternate coins out there.  I wonder which one will be the next bitcoin or litecoin.  Seems like you could speculate with a little cash here or there and make it big (possibly).

So, with binance you can only add funds to your account by transferring coins to their site....correct?  I'm a newbie so I wanted to make sure I was seeing it correctly.
