RIP Moderatism
« on: November 12, 2016, 12:23:16 PM »
Killed by extreme liberalism and conservatism alike.  Remember when the US invaded Afghanistan and Iraq and many claimed that by doing so we were actually creating more terrorists than we were killing.  The idea was that we were actually radicalizing the middle east as we attempted to combat radicalization in the middle east.  Well now that's happening in American politics.  Both sides are dehumanizing the other with terrible insults and in doing so pushing more and more people out of the middle and onto the extremes.  If only everyone would shut up and calm down.  Sucks that it won't happen.

I don't think calling the president a racist makes his supporters more racist.

I don't either.  But why did you say this?

What "terrible dehumanizing insults" are you referring to?

I mean, just, come on.  Why?  I made a good point.  Why can't you just say "good point _33, very insightful" and move on?  Dammit michigancat.

I think electing a bigoted sexist bully reality tv star as President may also be a major factor

Agreed, the past 8 years has put enormous strain on the discourse in this country. Hopefully trump can begin to mend that. A lot of that will depend on the left.

The OP was about the end of moderates, not just crazy weirdos being elected.

Oh, well, we haven't seen the end of moderates. Obama is incredibly moderate and wildly popular.

I consider myself a moderate 33.  I've spent the last few days consoling lib fb friends and reassuring them that they'll be ok.  Ugh V tiring.  My Aunt (retired history prof., feminist leader, & Hillary rally organizer) who lives in Grand Rapids, MI has reached out to me to talk about national politics and how to begin healing the divides rather than making them deeper.  I think a shift toward moderateizm would do that.  Should be an interesting discussion p excited about it actually.

Well, the extremists have the presidency, house, and senate, so I would expect them to get some stuff done.

I know you are averse to reading so you may not know that I blame him for a lot. It clearly isn't his fault that white people behave like they do towards him and whatever the state of race relations are in this country has nothing to do with him either, for better or worse.

"Race relations" suffered tremendously under him, and I can't  think of a single thing "white people" did under during his term to damage "race relations."

I'm sure there's some psuedo-academic irrational talking point about "systemic" or "structural" or "implicit" or "inhetent" racism created by the monothilic cracker that says I'm wrong. Fact is, obama was and is a partisan hack who surrounded himself with radicals and who has always received an enormous pass, largely because he is blackish and a democrat. He made race an issue as often as he could, radicals were emboldened by it, he did nothing to stop them and in fact encouraged them, and here we are today.
