There's really not been a lot of sex.

I am mainly referring to the orgy, which was both completely out of place and irrelevant to the "plot" (such that there is). I understand that robot rape and sex are an important part of the story and are real ethical issues for our own society as VR and robotics become more advanced, but if you don't think HBO wants its programming to appeal to more prurient interests, you're deluding yourselves.

Yes, it made perfect sense. The further you get away from Sweetwater(?) the more visceral the experience - more violence (with the chance to actually get hurt), more sex.
It also showed how uncomfortable William and Dolores were in that situation.
