I drive a 2008 Silverado 6.6 Duramax. Fuel economy sucks balls but I love the beast. Only 183K miles on it. It's good for another 200K miles. Needs a little TLC on trim and a paint refresh. I'll probably do both this year.

Downside is that it's full of bells and whistles. Not a stripped down truck from the 70s or 80s.
Still sounds bad ass. How did you decide on diesel?

In July 2022, I sold my house and land.  Moved to Louisiana to help my parents. They were way over their heads in debt. The truck and a 43 ft RV were part of the bailout for my parents. So the diesel wasn't so much by choice as it was circumstance.

Anyhow, I've since returned to Kentucky and sold the RV but kept the truck. I drive less than 5K a year (WFH, Uber to airport, etc). I do have a second modern vehicle but my kid is driving it.

Is there any reason I shouldn’t expect to get another 50k reliable miles out of a 2017 crosstrek that already has 170k miles on it? Looking at it for a kids car.

my kid is 11 years old and my wife drives a 2022 honda accord and she keeps telling him that she's going to drive it until he gets his license and then he can drive it and he is always like, "I don't want to drive your shitty car" lmao.

Sounds like a farm tested used F150 from Meade is the way to go

Does your HOA write you up if you leave the 3 year old entry level sedan in the driveway for longer than an hour?

Our Subaru needs a new head gasket that will cost more than the car is worth with a good head gasket. I don't want to replace it because we don't need a car but I am getting overruled.

I'm thinking the lowest mileage Honda or Toyota under $10k (or the cheapest with less than 125k miles). Maybe a Honda Fit?

The fit would be easy to park. And they did get really high reviews.

My daughter has the Honda HRV and that’s pretty handy because it’s small and a hatchback yet as the peace of mind of the all-wheel-drive.

Everything is easy to park if you're allowed to bump the cars in front of and behind you

I'm in a weird spot. Kids are 12ish. I have a 2019 Tesla with like 30k miles on it. Knock on wood, but it's been a great car. I've never had any of the issues lots of Tesla people have with their cars. I also bought it loaded as they were running a deal when I bought and they told me in like a year it was going to be driving around by itself picking up my kids at sports things. It has the full FSD package and has almost killed me and several people several times over the years. It's stupid and sucks mostly and I never use it, but it has it. It's also a pretty safe car so i've always thought I would just save it for my kids. Not to pit this up, but i'm really struggling with the Elon factor though. I'm also fairly cheap and not taking a hit because the owner of the company is a crap bag. Anyhoo, I just found out that since I have the FSD stuff that tries to kill me, Elon basically has to keep upgrading my car computer. I guess he said a long time ago that the computer in the 2016 cars or whatever would be able to drive around by themselves. He has recently admitted that he was lying about this so he knows he has to upgrade anyone that purchased the stuff that's prob never going to work. So I have a car that some idiots think is going to drive by itself someday that will get free hardware upgrades until that never happens. I basically have to keep this thing right?

Have rolled over 205k on the honda accord.

it has some lights on the dash and it pulls left when braking but should be fine.

Oh my guy was doing that.  I slammed on the brakes to avoid a deer and it lurched one way.  The thing that keeps it in alignment was broken or something, fixed now and drives great.

I've only been driving it since Aug 04 so I can't take full credit.

Pro's
Feels like I'm driving a free truck around.

Con's
bad gas mileage and any repair is a PITA
Exterior is rusty
One of the side half doors is broken and won't open.

Does your HOA write you up if you leave the 3 year old entry level sedan in the driveway for longer than an hour?
They assume it’s the maids.

True story. I called Allstate today for a quote to see what it would cost to add a 2025 GMC Sierra to my policy. They let me know it would be an additional $3500 per year.

Thats on top of the $4000 I already pay for a 4 year old Ford Expedition and an 11 year old Honda SUV. Neither my wife nor I have had a ticket or an accident in 20 years. We also both have 835+ FICO scores.

Home and auto insurance in Texas has become insane. Anybody in DFW have a much better solution?
