So mine is on it's last leg. We've all known I bought a lemon for years. 2002 VW. It's only at 130,000 miles, but I've plugged so much $ into this POS. I feel like I just need it to get me through June (wedding), but the risk/reward is a bit terrifying. Like, every time I slow down and come to a stop light, it kicks back hard. When I have ppl in it, they feel like they're about to die, because they're not used to it. I figure I can do one last oil change tomorrow and get some crap tighten and then give it ago. What's the longest you went holding onto a POS?
-
If I were you, I would drive it until it needs a repair you're unwilling to pay for. If something happens and there's a $1700 estimate to get it going again, punt. Until then, keep on with this ride
-
To fix the kickback issue, it was going to be $700 about 3 months ago. I took it into my trusted guys and they tightened and said: "If you're planning on getting a new car soon, I wouldn't blow $700 on fixing this". I was shocked, but they tightened it up enough until it's just became a problem again now.
-
Our past two vehicles we drove until they basically died or were at least on life support.
First a couple years ago a 2000 Ranger pick up that was at 190K and was overheating with several other problems. We were able to trade it in on a 2010 Tacoma which has been fantastic. It just went over 100K miles, but its got a lot of life left.
Then my wife's Caravan with 185K started falling apart in the last 6-8 months. Finally traded it in a couple weeks ago on a 2015 Civic.
I've generally been a "drive it until it dies" person, but I'm not sure I'll go quite that far with our next round of vehicles.
-
My car has around 120k, I've had it for 5 years and the sole repair on it in that time was $430. You should get something like that

That's how I am too. I'm very practical with this stuff. Ms. wacky is already tired of all the problems with it and I don't blame her, but I also don't want a car payment anytime soon. Not having one has felt amazing.

what are they "tightening"?

I usually go until i can't trust it. If i have to worry about getting stranded somewhere, time to cut bait.
-
what are they "tightening"?
muffler gasket.
-
Currently my beater car has somewhere around 249,000. Need a new tranny soon, but should be good for a little while longer.
-
At 178k on my truck. It's only 8 yrs old, though. Plan to get to 250k, then park it as a third vehicle and get a crossover or smaller car.

Yeah, they tried to explain it to me. But talking cars with me is like trying to teach Spanish to a 2 year old. Just beady eyes and staring off into the distance.
-
I have an '88 Chevy PU 4 x 4 with around 675K, current engine has around 275K, tranny rebuilt twice. She's a peach.
-
Currently at 101k. I want a new truck really bad, and part of me wants to to trade in my current Lambo while I can still get a decent return. But car payments are stupid and I don't like them.

For a guy named Bill Carahan, you sure drive a crap vehicle.

2002, 170k. Got it 4 years old for $3,300. If I could find a 4 year old car at that price to replace it I would jump on it but sadly not gonna happen.

Yes. I think that's what i'm looking forward to. I don't need to pinch pennies like I use to. I wouldn't mind having a little luxury in my life.

It is nice. The Civic we just bought is just the LX model, not the high end, but it still has lots of cool modern stuff. Also, it was still a new 15, one of a couple they had left, so with getting new 16s on the lot they gave us a really good deal. Drove it off the lot with only 11 miles on it which was pretty cool.

Yes this particular thread was brutal

I'm at about 125k with my '06 Pontiac G6. It still runs, ok, but definitely starting to show signs of age. I plan on using it until the Tesla Model 3 comes out in late 2017 (but most likely late) 2018. Putting my reservation for it down next week too :gocho: I was planning on getting a new car anyways in about 2017/18 anyways, so this coincides well. IMO I'm fine with anyone wanting to drive a car until it doesn't drive anymore, but I would like to get a new one every 10-12 years or so. I think it's nice to get upgraded to some new tech, better ride, and something that might fit your lifestyle better, and removing a potentially major headache from your life before it becomes one.
For reference, I drove my dad's car ('93 Infiniti J30 that he got from a old lady who basically only used it to go to the store) when I turned 16 until I graduated HS in '07 and got my now current car. He had that car for about 5 years before I drove it, and it was also just about time for it to go too. It had about 150k on it, you really had to baby it to get it going in the winter, and the leather was really starting to wear in it, also not having a CD player sucked (then). Getting my G6 at that point was pretty sweet upgrade at the time, and was perfect for driving to and from K-State, and it was better on gas mileage.

:curse: To both of you! I mean I'll be driving and putting on the gas and then it feels like big foot just punched the front of my car and then it starts accelerating until big foot hits my car again randomly. Feels dangerous in traffic, because sometimes the kickback is so strong, it shuts off the car.

1. Cars are not an investment. They are transportation.
2. If you drive a lot, leases will eff you.
3. If you like to have a new car every 2-3 years, have good credit, and don't exceed the mileage limits, then leasing is the best choice. If you don't fit those criteria, or you want a car that's actually fun or you want to customize, then don't lease.

I usually only drive the ferrari inbetween trips to the heli pad and home, so you have some valid points.

drove my 2001 Hyundai from mile 9 to 230,000. Really wanted 300k but I knew that was greedy.
-
Now that I think about it the earliest I've given up on a car is 232,000, back in ought-6 when I traded in my '95 Honda Accord for the Taco. Previous to that my '78 Mercedes 240D had over 250k on it before the odometer quit working.

When I got rear ended it cause me to be freaked out any time a car was quickly approaching from behind for quite a while. Abe was probably similarly traumatized.

Really a very common issue. Feel for you. But, hey, he got a "free" car out of it, so that is super nice. So #blessed, Abe.

I'm jealous of you people that got a sense of anxiety from being rear-ended.
All I got was a giant hassle from the insurance company, a bulging disc and pinched nerve in my back which are going to require surgery, and an ongoing lawsuit.

i realize you're getting married soon but if you need a car that badly, what's waiting 2 months going to accomplish?
-
I'd sell the beast on Craigslist for whatever you can get and carpool or something until then. That death trap might kill you before you even make it to June.
-
i wouldn't recommend carmax other than i think they will basically accept any type of trade in. better than just towing the car away as junk.

-
If the costs of repairs are too high, make sure you can drive the thing to a car lot and if it runs enough to do that you should get at least 1k trade in value and maybe more. It gives you another negotiation point so you can go back and forth on the price and on the trade in value and usually the dealer will work with one or the other to get you somewhere near what you want.

Wacky, if you are already broke due to the wedding, how are you going to afford a car payment after the wedding? I know your credo is NO CONSEQUENCES, but I just want to make sure you take a second to think about getting a car payment on the back end of being broke.
-
probably missed it, but why aren't mrs wacky's parents paying for this wedding with their bbq fortune?
-
They are paying for it. And it's not bbq how they got their $. They use to be the main dairy supplier in KC, back in the day. Only thing i'm paying for is the honeymoon, because I want to feel like a man of some sorts.

Wedding ring bans, honeymoon, paid for my guys suits and shoes, student loans take a good portion of one of my checks, etc.

I have amazing credit. I have plenty of wiggle room for a new car payment. Problem is, i'm just a cheap ass. I seriously would rather see the $ in my account, then use it. It's a weird thing. However, when i'm out with my friends, i'm very generous. I don't understand the way i'm processed. brb. doing chipotle.

Wacky, you guys will probably buy a house and want to have kids, right? You need to go ahead and buy yourself a car you will be happy with sooner instead of later.
I doubt a minivan is ever in the cards for the Wacky08s so my advice is get yourself a nice SUV that you will get you thru the next 10 years of first house projects and then hauling around all the babies & baby stuff. It will never be easier to pay for it than it will be in the next year or two.

I bet Wacky bought Zoot suits. That would be a very wacky thing to do.

or go buy a cheap Honda accord or some crap that's reliable, and when you have kids in 2 or 3 years, trade it for something bigger since you'll likely both be making more than you are today, and all the wedding expenses are behind you
-
if you can't afford a new (different) car now, you won't be able to afford one in 2 months
you can do whatever you want with wedding gift money, but buying a used honda seems like a pretty bad choice
and if you think that you're going to have more free reign with your finances after getting married, good luck with that
man the eff up and go finance a honda if you can't buy one outright, it's quite the adult decision and mrs wacky will be impressed

ya gotta be careful playing that game, wait too long and you are at the "move to the bigger, more expensive 2nd house" stage with an even smaller vehicle budget.

That is why you should start out in a huge house. Just go all out. It'll be a pain in the ass, but then you can down size and make a bunch of money when you sell the huge house.
(Is this the thread where people talk about bad financial decisions they are about to make and then everyone else encourages them not to make that bad financial decision, but here is a different bad financial decision you should make?)

if you're moving to a bigger 2nd house to where you can't afford upgrading your Honda accord, you're a giant dumbass

Ok guys, sheesh.
-
Ok guys, sheesh.
Cheap Hondas are cheap for a reason. Honda carries a premium in the used car market (it's unjustified for the most part IMO).
Don't buy an SUV either. They suck. Don't buy a minivan. They suck more than SUVs.
Buy a Camaro SS or a Mustang GT. Any kids you have will be small at first so they don't need leg room. This will allow you to enjoy life before eventual kids ruin it.

the last two cheap Hondas that I bought went +100k miles after purchasing with the biggest maintenance issue being a new alternator

you know what, you're right. the accord that had the alternator go also had the timing belt break while I was driving it...no engine damage done but obvs had to replace it
I spent $1200 on the accord and $2000 on the civic
the distributor died on the civic but was easy to replace as was the radiator

ya, the timing belts (and weak ass transmissions on the SUVs & Vans) are Honda's only downside as the ultimate driving appliance

Volkswagens are expensive as eff to own. They carry a BMW-like premium on parts and labor without having the quality of BMW.

Well, after some jackass spun me into a 180 turn on 69 highway into the rough ridin' median, blowing up my car, I got right around 10 K back from the insurance company. I had 4K left on the car loan. paid that off and had 6 K left. I bought this VW with only 70,000 miles on it at the time for $9,500. It had two previous owners tho. I should have known.
-
seriously, buy yourself a nice 4runner now and try and get it paid off before you have kids and the Mrs stops/reduces her working. You will have something dependable and big enough for the family that will run forever if you just keep the oil changed.
-
Yeah, I know it's a little thing, but I need something with leg space. I know 'Clams feels me on this one. Ms Wacky already bought a Tahoe last year, so we're good on the big vehicle for future kids. I need something for just me mainly. :)

A Mustang GT or Camaro SS has plenty of leg space for the driver.

Or you could look at the Ford Focus ST (or the RS if you can get your hands on one).

My last car hit 100k the week before some idiot texted and drove into the back of it. Got a nice check and a car with 40 miles on it
That is great Abe
in what way is losing your car and having to wait for an insurance check and then dealing with replacing your previous car that was wrecked by some fuckstick rear ending you, "great" ?
not to mention the latent physical effects lying in wait, or the i'm sure mental trauma that goes along with living through something like that. feel for you abe. if you ever need someone to talk to, just pm me.
I coped. I'm not a FP. Insurance check came within a week, and of course I had a decent rental in the meantime. It didn't make it free, but it was a quick and easy way to upgrade than "team drive it till it dies", got me more money than a shitty lowball offer for a trade-in or the hassle of selling the car to some idiot.
-
I always wanted a mustang, until my friend came into town and it snowed over night, and myself and about 4 other guys had to push his ass up some big hill, because it just can't do it in the snow. It changed my prospective on mustangs after that.

Not jumping on puni's hellantra is really coming back to bite you in the ass

I drive them until they're nearly dead too. Ridgeline is 8 yo with 165k. Prius C is four years old with 123k (made a killing on mileage reimbursement for two years).
I drive a company provided Ford Escape now. Very comfortable. Decent fuel economy (25-30mpg). 29k in ten months. I'd recommend if you don't want a car.

wacky, i think it's time for you to join your pal tobias in the "i don't give a crap about cars, just don't look embarrassing and be super easy to maintain" club and hop yourself into a honda accord

Incorrect. I like fun cars. I dislike boring and shitty handling cars. I do hate SUVs. People that own them usually drive around with the vehicle empty 99% of the time.
The Camaro SS and Mustang GT are great values on the $ spent per awesomeness scale. BMW makes some good cars but if Wacky is complaining about cost of owning the VW, then BMW isn't for him because they're even worse (Mercedes too).

Wacky,
If you insist on buying a boring Accord then at least get something like a Triumph Street Triple to go with it so you don't bore yourself to death.

I'll look into all options listed. I appreciate everyone's time on the matter.

No, that would apply if I recommended a Ducati Monster or Harley Soft-tail/lowrider/anything other than the VROD.

My friend had a nice mazda3 with leather and whatnot and it was only a couple years old. He moved to dallas and received crap nonstop from coworkers for driving a mommy car. I mean which party is white trash in that story?

I currently drive a Mazda Speed3. I'm getting rid of a 2008 Mazda 3. They're great cars and even with the lower trim options they're more fun to drive than an Accord.
Dallas is overpopulated with assholes that think bigger vehicles make them better drivers.

i'd rather drive the new honda accord sport over a mazda

wacks, have you considered buying a Can-Am Spyder? you can pick them up used for under $9k and you'd be a true boner-causer.
-
I have a '10 dodge ram 1500 with bout 50k on it.
my last car was a 96 jeep grand cherokee that died at about 325k. it was a dream car as far as maintenance is concerned. didn't spend more than $500 on any single repair. I had the headliner replaced in it b/c it started to fall off, that was honestly the most expensive repair I had done. I learned a lot about cars as I did almost all the maintenance on it myself. flush the tranny, change the oil, replace break fluid/pads, even replaced the radiator once. it was a fun car. I don't feel like I can do that stuff with my truck now, too many electronics and insanely expensive things I could break if I do something wrong.
TLDR: in my experience jeeps run forever and are great vehicles.

yeah, i suppose. mostly it's due to my time constraints now, and I felt much less concerned about messing up a $2,000 car than I do about my somewhat new $30,000 truck.
what is this write off? how much $ have I been losing by not using it?

if you can't afford a new (different) car now, you won't be able to afford one in 2 months
you can do whatever you want with wedding gift money, but buying a used honda seems like a pretty bad choice
and if you think that you're going to have more free reign with your finances after getting married, good luck with that
man the eff up and go finance a honda if you can't buy one outright, it's quite the adult decision and mrs wacky will be impressed
Maybe wacky is going to get like $75k in wedding cash and he can just pay straight cash on a new BMW come July

i hadn't thought of that, might not be a bad idea to go that route. he'll prob get an X3 though  omg an X3 LOL

Not a bad ride at all. Gets me wondering about the rear seat roominess in that car as I also suffer from the kid kicking the back of the drivers seat and the extra large baby carseat behind the other. Since I own a VW Diesel and they will be buying it back from me shortly I guess I'm in the car market again. I hate buying cars.

wouldn't you rather have a cpo on a cadillac? ya cmax has a warranty but it's not the same
It has <10,000 miles on it. Guess I'm just not that concerned about a warranty. The factory power train warranty is still valid.

not concerned about a warranty on a used car?? you should be.
the car has <10k miles on it now. that's not the point. you should be worried about when it has 50k+ miles on it.
like cadillac says about their cpo warranty- you're not buying the cars past, you're buying its future
but as you pointed out, it looks like cadillac allows for a 6 year/70k mile limited powertrain (the expensive stuff) transferable which covers you from most things except misuse. you should be fine, but you also have no idea what the previous owner did in that vehicle.
just reading about it, the cpo offers bumper to bumper for 6/70 while the non cpo is powertrain 6/70.
not a huge $$ risk for you, you should be good to go

We really don't plan on keeping this, or any, vehicle for more than 4 years, which will still be within the power train warranty.
Anyways, we didn't end up getting it today, because it was a transfer from stl, and it didn't get here today for some reason. Now mrs kcfd is having second thoughts so we may not end up buying it anyways.

Picked up a 2014 Impala 2LT this weekend. Not bad for under $20K and no luxury label on the auto insurance. Lets see if I enjoy this ride for a good 200K miles. I had 175K on the Ridgeline that I recently totaled.

I once owned a 93 Honda civic hatch back and I made a dumb choice and drove drunk and ended up racing down vattier and jumped the round about. Car sruvived. I also used to take my prelude out into my mom's field and jump the hill and whip kitties. Prelude survived. What I'm saying is that Honda makes a great product that does more than its designed to. Hating on Honda just shows you know nothing about cars. I've also owned a passport and now drive a civic. Only thing that ever happens is that the drain cap leaks.

I've went close to 300,000 miles on an old GMC truck that I drove in high school. Never had another vehicle that I felt like driving much past 100k.
-
Currently driving an 03 Impala (~200k miles) and am looking to upgrade in April. Narrowed it down to:
2017 - GMC Acadia
2017 - Cadillac XT5
2017 - Buick Enclave
I'm leaning toward the XT5 currently, but the wife is worried about the reduced seating capacity between it and the Buick/GMC.
Thoughts? Experiences?

pretty soon i'm going to trade in my M3 for an M2, very excited. the feisty thing about it is that when i purchase the M2 i will never even have test driven one and chances are i will not have seen the vehicle i'm buying in person. #internetofthings

how much different is the M2 vs a 335 anyways? Isn't your M3 a V8? I would keep that and by a daily, my neighbor just bought an off lease '14 335ix for $29k that supposedly has some dealer performance tune that puts over 400hp and doesn't effect the warranty at all.
-
the m2 is a very different vehicle than the e9x m3, it's basically the next generation m3. not really comparable to the 335 in any way . it's time to get out of the m3 while i can still get max value and before 1st round of repairs start, which on an m vehicle are $$$. tires alone are $2k

Dinan use to be warranty covered. Much more effective tunes for way less money out there though.

If you are all :kstategrad: have you considered euro delivery?

I remember watching a dude hop that roundabout but he was being chased by cops.
I was going to drive to Wamego to see a girl but chose not too and turned around. I was being an idiot.
-
I think this is the 3rd time this has been said. Congrats Wacky. :D
 Thanks! 'Clams complimented me on my car the other day too. Feels good to get on the highway and not have to worry if your car is going to stalle during traffic or not. :D
Yes. I drove a Mercury Zephyr for a while that didn't have reverse. It felt good to not have to deal with pushing my car out of parking spots at times. Hondas are good cars. And you're white Accord is super sweet.
-
I once owned a 93 Honda civic hatch back and I made a dumb choice and drove drunk and ended up racing down vattier and jumped the round about. Only thing that ever happens is that the drain cap leaks.
who was hating on Hondas? :dunno:
Probably no one. It was probably all in my mind. I just wanted to tell those stories. I'm trying to stop being mean to people on here when I'm unhappy. I think it was an attempt to get some anger out and also not be the bad person I've been on here lately.

Let's talk about why the Q7 is the current front runner for the steve dave shitloads of kids hauler around'er and sd daily driver also.
A) three rows. I only have 2 kids (and only ever will) but sometimes have like a babysitter or family member to drive around as well.
B) 2nd row is big. less kicking my seat from this 3 year old that's the size of a massive 5 year old with long kicking legs.
C) looks cool. not like a jumbo SUV that looks like a pickup truck. more like an embiggen'd station wagon
D) has like technology out the ass and a good stereo and crap
E) feels fancy AF when you sit in it
F) built in sun shades in the second row
-
F seems like a deal sealer to me
-
The other day I picked up Lil Emo and we hit some sun and he very dramatically shoved his hands in his face and screamed I'M BLIND. So ya F seems cool.
-
yep, and the after market ones suck complete ass and always fall off or something.
-
it's stuff like this that gives me a parent boner these days
Q7 and Car Seats
The Q7 gets rave reviews for its capability to hold car seats. There are complete LATCH connections on all five of the Q7's rear seats. All of the anchor attachment points are easy to locate and use. There is also plenty of room for the car seats in any seating position, without the need to slide other seats forward and take away legroom from adults sitting up front.

-
Why don't they just make normal seats that fit kids. So weird
-
the rules in kansas now are that you kid has to be in a car seat until they're like 12 or something kind of redicu

I drive a 2003 Toyota Camry XLE with 235k on it. Still runs great.

My brother had a 04 Camry XLE and he put a trailer hitch on it. Pulled a trailer around a couple of times a month for about 7 years.
Eventually the engine gave out while pulling that trailer going up a hill on the interstate....245k miles.

We have an Acadia, what a rough ridin' boat. Hard to see behind or on either side, a real bitch to park, sluggish handling, driving with the windows down creates this thumping from the airflow around the vehicle which will give you a headache. Other than that, nice ride.

I think I'm just wired a bit differently. If I was going to go for a performance car like that, especially for the coin, I'd rather order it. And a chance to then drive it on the autobahn? Man that just sounds fantastic. I'm sure you'll enjoy a nicely equipped one from the dealer, not like you can order a stripped down M (aside from the lol track car m4 gts). Are you in KC going through Baron? I've walked around there a couple times and they've had a great mix of real enthusiast dealers.

no, not baron. they had a couple of preorders that were sold like a year before production began. you can't order these cars is my point, the line is beyond production estimates the last time i checked, which is to say sometime in 2018 would be my delivery date.
there's so few options available on the m2 that most that are hitting dealers are fully equipped. more than likely i will get mine from a bmw dealer in california and just have them ship it sight unseen
mrs clams did order her porsche that way though, it took like 6 months to be built and delivered but porsche is a different beast and you can spec those things out for days.

I am just now starting to look at SUVs in this style. Is the 20-25 MPG good for these kinds of cars? Also, I'm assuming makes like Audi are a pain to get serviced. Am I wrong?
-
Why would it be a pain to get serviced?
-
Just if the parts are more proprietary/expensive and if an average mechanic doesn't typically deal with it (making you go through the dealer for everything). I assume this is the case with most foreign luxury brands but I've never actually owned one myself.
-
ms tobias' old pos vw was a beating to have in nck, don't miss that at all

U just take it to the dealer. if it breaks, it's covered by warranty.

low 20s highway and mid teens city is about best case for the typical 3 row SUV with a V6 and all wheel drive. there are a few Diesels from the Germans and the Volvo and Toyota hybrids that might do a bit better.
-
Literally the biggest eff ups I've ever experienced when trying to maintain a car were at dealerships.
Brand new Honda Prelude: Opps, sorry we forgot to refill the oil.
Brand New Fully Loaded Nissan Maxima: Sorry we had a recall on air bags and then didn't put the steering wheel back on right.
Brand New Ford Explorer (V8 and loaded): Sorry we messed up your AWD and traction control.
Brand New Honda Pilot: Sorry we messed up your TPMS
Brand New Volvo C70 Convertible: Opps, sorry we messed up your roof mechanism
-
Same here. Actually just paid $700+ for a bunch of routine maintenance at the dealer and when I opened the trunk I saw loose screws just sitting in the bottom of it. Couldn't be bothered to actually screw them back in.
Plus, I love being able to take my car to a reputable local (competent) mechanic who I can actually trust to tell me what needs fixing and who is completely up front about costs. I've never experienced that level of trust at a dealer.
-

This is correct. Buy the extended warranty upfront. Trade in when warranty ends. Rinse and Repeat. They can't eff you on service when they are footing the bill.

My wife's Honda Accord had to have the upper block replaced because it was burning oil. Only like 100k miles. eff Honda right now.

Well, troll noted, but she takes it to Honda every 5k and she drives like a lady. She takes very good care of her car. This is a known issue, you should Google it. Honda covered 90% of the cost but we're now 1000+ miles since the fix and it's still burning oil, about a liter every 1000 miles. They can't figure it out.

She only ever uses top tier gasoline. Having previously worked in the industry she's a gasoline snob. It's an issue, they have admitted as such. I believe there was even a class action.

Getting premium gasoline is a waste of money according to an article I read, and my gut instincts. Is there any reason to use premium in a Honda?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
not unless honda recommends it
-
According to a scientific study I read an article on, the only time it makes a difference is if you (1) have a high performace engine that is (2) operating under high performance conditions. Otherwise, no measurable difference.
-
high combustion engines need it
-
high compression engines need it to perform, but modern engines have computer controlled timing that will let you burn lower octane without any damage
-
My wife's old X5 would flip out if you put regular 87 in there. Basically would shut down like she was out of gas.
-
Always premium if it has a turbo or supercharger
-
Read you owners manual. If it says recommended you don't HAVE to have it but if it says required you do.

Anyone purchased a certified pre-owned car that used to be a rental, or have any good reason not to? I was skeptical about the idea, but it is true that the records should be well kept and maintenance performed regularly, which is a plus. Warming up to the idea now.

I bought a convertible mustang that used to be a rental. I never had any abnormal problems with it. I was initially apprehensive, but the low miles sold me. I eventually totaled it

My transmission was slipping in my Dodge Dakota pickup truck so I took it in and they told me it was the transmission and it would be $2300 to rebuild, so I took it to a different place to get another estimate and he told me it was not the transmission but only a sensor of some kind that was making it slip and replacing the sensor was only $180. It just goes to show you some mechanics are pieces of crap liars and some are good.

mrs. dave wouldn't let me get a Q7 because it was too small inside for hauling shitloads of kids hillbilly style. crap, I forgot to post but it'd probably have been too late anyway. My buddy got some used tesla through whatever recycling program they have. It's sedan looking but with a hatchback, and that's where the extra row of seats are. So you put your kids in that thing and they're facing backwards. No kicking the back of your seat. All the stuff you'd throw in the trunk goes under the hood where an engine would've been.

it will look like this and basically be a cheaper alternative to a 4runner

Mine is an 04 with 135k. I feel in my gut that within the next year there is going to be a repair that costs more than the thing is worth.
I've been looking at some crap, trying to decide what I want, but god damn they make super ugly suv's now. There are a few sedans I'm interested in, but I really like having 4wd and being above traffic a bit. Quite the pickle
I think this is a hot piece of A

this wasn't even designed by ford, just some graphic designer bronco lover
skipper is right, that ugly thing is the new bronco (according to jalopnik)

mrs. dave wouldn't let me get a Q7 because it was too small inside for hauling shitloads of kids hillbilly style. I now own a gigantic huge truck thing that gets 18 MPG on the highway and has about 190 HP more than I would ever want in a vehicle and can tow 8,500 lbs which I will never use. It's like driving a giant cow farmer truck.
the internet tells me that vehicle is a nissan armada. it looks very big.
good news is that it will probably survive a nuclear blast on norad. bad news is that you'll only get about 3 miles from ground zero before it runs out of gas and the radioactive fallout gets you.
-
Confirmed. And it's not one of those shitty imports that are manufactured in the USA. Made in Konichiwa Tokyo.
-
at this point it's probably just varying degrees of "damn it" for you anyway so i guess no reason to fight it if that's what mrs sd wants
my current v8 gets around 15 mpg and it really sucked when gas was $4 a gallon and i don't even drive much. hopefully fracking stuff still works great for cheap gas like last two years
-
i'd like to get one of those old cars that is pretty to look at, but i don't want people to look at me when i drive.
-
also i've never cleaned the inside or outside of any car i've ever owned, so it'd probably not stay super pretty.
-

get a cool old truck or jeep
I want a beater 1st gen Blazer (the one where the whole roof comes off) as a fun/haul crap around/winter vehicle

i have an old suv and a not as old car that are both good for not washing. sometimes i just think it'd be neat to have a pretty car.

i like to clean my car, it's probably similar to doing lawn work or something
you get all this stuff out and make a big mess in the driveway and then you clean it all up and put the stuff all away with in the garage and get all hot and gross then chug a drink and are tired but then it looks great and so it feels good

I don't trust either of our vehicles to go some places that I want to go. I "need" something with 4wd and decent clearance, not an AWD crossover. Also should be new enough and reliable enough to not be concerned about getting stranded in the middle of the desert 300-400 miles away from home. What should I do?
1) Trade in my car for a 4Runner or something similar. This is the way I was leaning, but my car is just about perfect 99% of the time. Reliable, good MPG for commute, AWD for the many snow days and for driving up the canyon to ski. But should be easy to sell for same reasons and because it's a make everyone drives out here.
2) Trade in mrstdaver's minivan for Tahoe or something similar. 4Runner size won't do here, need the extra space for the main family hauler.
3) Get a cheapish third vehicle. I don't want to do this.
Think I answered my own question. #2 it is. Does that Armada beast boat come in 4wd?
-
Apply some cc thread synergy and rent the big vehicle you need on those 1% of times that your car isn't perfect.
-
I think Range Rover is the way to go. If you have ever watched their commercials they seem like a very reliable car for off road(vision quest) adventures. IDK what your price range is but maybe sell whatever you have and get a tiny house and RR and call it good?
-

Good idea. Especially here in the interim until I decide for sure.

Sometimes at work I park right behind a coworkers F250 and it looks like a baby truck following the mama truck. Pretty adorable.

Yes, of course. It's got better off road chops than a stupid canadian Tahoe.

I've been seeing a lot more Hummers driving around lately. I thought they went the way of the dinosaur with high gas prices. The stagnation must have brought them back into the fold.
I put a lot of miles on cars these days (all highway), and am already looking for a new whip to be purchased in a couple years. As an avid manual transmission junkie, it's getting harder to find a non-compact, non-sports car that fits the mold.
Original plan was just to update the current car '13 VW CC, but they got rid of their manual trannies in '15 i think (doing the push button or paddle i dunno).

My trusty steed now has 275k on it. I was going for 300 but honestly think it can go quite a bit further. No self limitations ya know. Anyway wacky that's how far I've went and hope to went further.

I was confused with mine when I first got it (never had one before), because Mrs. Wacky's beeps and turns red when you're too close. Mine doesn't make a noise. When I first started driving it, I think I was getting closer to cars than what I thought.

Just rolled over 90k on my Fusion. Approaching 10yr birthday. I drive this car like a grandma so I'm hoping to get at least 5 more years out of it. Nothing sexy at all about this car but I just don't want to buy a new one until electrics are much more prevalent and affordable.

Acura is solid HENRY, but I liked the Fusion Hybrid. Maybe low end HENRY. Cars just aren't something I splurge on. Too much money for a depreciating asset and the more luxury you buy the worse the value.

RL's (RLX now) are solid old balls, not Henry (I had to look that up, btw), IMO. I am kinda old balls, and I have one. So, facts.

On one hand, I’d like to get a different car, but on the other hand I can’t decide what I want. Nothing really gets me super excited.
I want a sedan with luxurious interior, and I’d prefer like 300 hp but that’s not a huge deal. And great tech. Needs to have all the cool crap. And, must be used.
I have been eyeballing the Infinity Q50 sport, Hyundai Genesis sedan with all the crap on it, Cadillac CTS, and Lexus ES 350 (maybe a GS, but those are much pricier). The BMW 5 series might be OK. I dislike Audi’s and am not a huge Mercedes fan. Sadly, I don’t really like any current Acura.
Nothing really “fits.”
-
Come this January, I'll have went less than 50K miles in 8 years, with only round 10K of that in the last 3 years. At that pace, I am hoping I never have to get a new car again.

Friend has one. Very nice car. Fun to drive.
Not an import guy. Just my preference. I'm in a 2014 Impala with 2LT package. Fast and comfortable. I've driven 20K+ since February. Absolutely love it.
Big effin engine. Leather and suede. Heated seats. Tons of room. I'm talking ten dead bodies in the trunk room plus a large rear seating area. All the other cool stuff on a loaded car.
The only downside is shitty Chevy nav that requires OnStar. Newer models have changed that I believe. I just use my phone.

hell yeah it is - you can get almost the same thing for a lot less cash in the Platinum Explorer but it doesn't have anywhere near the swag

Used electrics are dirt cheap. No incentives and just enough uncertainty in the reliability to make for pretty great deals. I mean yeah keep that fusion going but a Leaf as a second car is pretty great.

Those continentals are cool, but pricy. I don’t want to spend that much. The 2017 MKZ is kinda cool, because they fixed that front end pointy look, and they now look a lot like a continental.
Whatever I get, I am buying used, and there just aren’t enough model years of either of those out yet to get a good deal on a gently used one.

I mean every single "best luxury..." category for every year is just a bunch of Lexus'. Kinda dominate the lists. Seem to be cheaper to have serviced than BMW to, but I could be wrong on that....I don't know much about BMW's. The BMW 3 series is at the top of all of the lists as well. On that one, the 335 V6 is the one I think I'd want.

I think you are perhaps right that they are getting more common, but wrong on the value proposition. I tried a boat load of cars today, and the damn Acura’s are still the best cars top to bottom for the money, in my opinion.
The TLX and RLX are pretty great cars. I am not sure what is a more grown up guy car than a car that tops the charts on reliability, has all the best tech, and can come with a 300hp V6.
The ILX is the smaller one, maybe that’s what you mean? You can’t confuse any of the Acura’s with a regular Honda or Toyota...they are far superior than those.
-
There isn’t much of anything out there that I like better than my current RL. I will end up getting SOMETHING, but meh city in the sedan market right now.
-
The hilarious thing about many of the SUV’s right now is that they have maybe 2 inches more ground clearance than sedans. They aren’t “off road vehicles,” and yet they cost like $10K more than a sedan and have a worse ride, a louder cabin, and worse gas mileage. I just don’t get it. If I want a truck I am getting a F150 or a Silverado or something.

Did you drive any Lexus GS or Infiniti Q (the old M series) models? The ES Lexus is just a more old ballzier version of the Acuras. The G series Infinitis are a bit smaller than the RL you have now but that may not matter.
I think those are your only options that make sense if you are looking used. The guys that I know that buy used German cars all have a good independent shop that they really trust but significant service is an if not a when.

2002, 170k. Got it 4 years old for $3,300. If I could find a 4 year old car at that price to replace it I would jump on it but sadly not gonna happen.

...early leader in the clubhouse is the Lexus IS 350, with the 300hp v6.
I already told you what to do. 428i Gran Coupe. Good grief.
So, I sort of took your advice. I checked this car out, and really liked it. But, then my wife said "Hey, I want to trade in my fancy SUV for a mini van" even though she just got her fancy SUV like a year ago and prior to that always had mini-vans since birth of kids. So, she was like YOLO! (but to me), and encouraged me to go the 428 or 435 COUPE route! I suspect that she wanted to offset her mini-van. But, COUPE, can you believe it?!? I was like "holy crap!" Getting clearance, at my age, from your wife to buy a sports coupe is like nuts, man. So, I looked at them, and like them, but I just couldn't get passed how much of a pain in the ass it would be every time my kids wanted to get out of the car, when I was carrying more than one kid. I am not the primary kid drop off guy, but let's face it, I have to do that a bunch even though that isn't the plan.
Long story short, I got the 535 with AWD, cold weather package for the steering wheel heater and rear seat heaters and fancy backup camera sensor setup. Black on black. It's used (of course), but only 25K miles. I am delighted!
-
Sounds like a fantastic purchase.

I am delighted!
sounds hot pete, congrats!

Holy crap, Pete. I'm very happy for you. I've been drooling over this black on black 435i at the Topeka dealership. I figured with kiddos the 428i Gran Coupe would be more up the family alley.
Consider this post my begging to ride with you somewhere.

I got too excited and posted before reading it all. I thought you got the 435i. Either way. I'm jealous and happy for you all at the same time.

What do you mean? I got the 535 instead of the 435, mostly because I am just too old balls and would get grumpy if I had to flip seats forward to let people (kids being dropped off and picked up) get in and out.

Also, it’s pretty fast. Faster than my RL was and it had a 6 cylinder. It’s definitely faster than I needed.

wondering how you like it
I really like it a lot. My only criticism so far is that the radio doesn’t have enough presets, but the fact that you can make them phone numbers to dial is a lot of fun.
I am sure it doesn’t handle even close to as well as a 2, 3 or 4 series, but I do t mind. I like straight forward acceleration the most, and that just for merging and passing, or going from 30 to 50+ on Metcalf in a hurry.

After driving this beast all around town today I’ve decided it s a pretty great vehicle. The “lane keep” function is a little annoying on city streets but whatev. Will be interest to see how long it takes me to get used to the automatic parallel park feature. The first time I tried it was pretty weird.

You have to toggle it on in the first place and it would only be annoying if you don't use your blinker smdh KCFDcat

It's weird as hell on the highway too
-
I rented an LTZ Tahoe in the Philadelphia area one week for work, and it had that lane keep notification stuff turned on. The area I was in had like teeny tiny little lanes, and I was making that rough ridin' alarm work over time. I had no idea how shitty I was at maintaining the lane. Turns out I drive like I’m hammered when I am sober. Go Cats.

For more than just that reason, I have learned that I am actually a really terrible driver. I don’t think that was always the case, but maybe it was. I am terrible now, that’s for sure.
However, I have better (safer) intentions nowadays. Maybe I am just a terrible defensive driver and I was actually a decent offensive driver when I was younger and more selfish?

I probably should have bought a Volvo.
-
I have a 2009 Corolla with 207k on it. I drive about 100 miles a day & 500 mile trips regularly. I don't want to buy a new car. I also don't want to spend a lot trying to figure out what's wrong with this one.
When I drive down the highway it randomly loses about half its RPMs and drops to 50. It will build back up to 60 for a mile or so, then jumps back up to 70 easily or back down to 50. When it's topping out at 50/60 the gas pedal gives very little resistance. It feels like a car ran off air pressure that pressures up & runs great, then runs out of pressure & has no power for 1-2 minutes while repressuring back up. It will also lose RPMs and sometimes die at red lights.
If the best option is to go buy a new car to run into the ground again, that's fine. I want to do what's the most cost effective long term, but I also feel like I should be able to get to 250k/300k before getting something else to run into the ground.
Advice?
-
Take it Toyota shop and let them run diagnostics. Should be able to tell you what is wrong. Decide from there. Nine years and 200K is a good run.
Maybe slide into another Toyota. Just put my daughter in a 18 Camary. Enjoyable ride. Should get her through grad school and beyond.

So one of my cars (a Ford) is subject to the Takata airbag recall. They still don't have a replacement part so in the meantime they're paying for a rental car. I've been rolling around in a 2018 Ford Fusion Hybrid for nearly 3 months now. My wife and I take turns driving it based on whomever has more driving that day. We've put over 5,000 miles on it already. Got a call from my dealership the other day to "apologize for the delay" in getting the part. "To help make it right," they said they could get me a good trade-in value for my current car if I was interested in buying a new one. I told her no thanks. I'm gonna ride this rental into the ground, and I'll do the same with own car once they've got it fixed. I'm holding out until there's a good selection of reasonably priced EVs.

No check engine light mentioned. Never seen a vacuum leak on a modern without a check engine. Part of emissions compliance.

Standard or automatic transmission?
-
it is certainly one or a combination of the following: plugs, o2 sensor, MAF
-
Sorry, forgot the check engine light is on, but it just gives a generic emissions code. It's been giving that for a few years & 60k & everyone said don't spend money until you have an issue. Then it gave an ignition coil error. Changed that & no improvement except the ignition code is gone. Next it was suggested I change the evap solenoid since it's cheap/easy & no change.
Automatic.
Also, new thing on drive home today. Shortly after it started to lose speed with the cruise on, it started revving 1000 RPM over normal but barely maintained 50 the higher RPMs.
Do they normally charge for a diagnostic check? My fear is is since it's a generic code I'll get into a downward spiral of $400 here and $300 there. I figured I'd come here & explain the symptoms. Everyone else I talk to just heard the first thing I say, then goes after that.
I guess my main question is am I crazy for thinking 207k miles isn't enough to constitute "running into the ground."
-
Doesn't Auto zone check the codes for free?
-
Doesn't Auto zone check the codes for free?
Yeah, but a generic code that doesn't tell you anything.
-
Can you manually put the transmission in to 3rd or 4th, cruise down the highway at 60 mph and still lose rpms?
-

Your off the shelf odb only reads the generic.
If puni fix doesn't work, pay the diagnostic fee. Their computer is worth more than your car. :)
I just went through similar issue with an Audi. My guy only had an odb reader. Couldn't read other specific codes that the standard reader doesn't detect. Import shop dialed in the fix. I paid the diagnostic and sold it.

they go together because bad plugs and/or bad MAF will kill your o2 sensor
i havent googled your car at all so cannot speak to how easy/diffucult/expensive this might be.

Another 100K easy.
Keep the oil change, change the timing belt every 100K (or believe it's just a Honda gimmick to get you to pay for an expensive repair since Honda's supposedly don't need any repairs . . . which reminds me of the time when Acura was just a couple of years old and a friend bought one from a dealership that was also a GM dealer. The GM service bays were full of nearly new GM cars and the Acura service bays were empty despite the fact they'd sold a crap ton of Acura's from day one).

I am starting to shop for a car to buy next spring/summer. I sold my BMW (was filled with guilt on that purchase because I wasn’t investing as much as I should) and have been driving a car that I will give to my daughter next Spring. Anyone have any good idea on used cars that have a boat load of options? I have never bought new, and don't plan to start now. I want adaptive cruise control, a really big info screen thing, heated seats, heated steering wheel, smart key, the works. Kinda eyeballing Hyundai and Kia...never thought I'd say that! Also, I don't care about SUV's so I'd rather not pay extra for an SUV vs car.

Tesla Model S.

SUV but I was in a Kia SUV Rental and it impressed me quite a bit. I've read that they decided to upgrade quality in the new models and this thing was quiet as crap on the highway and had all the features you listed. Definitely changed my mind about Kia.

I am seriously considering an Optima SXL, for example. That K900 is badass but only RWD AND KANSAS WINTERS OMG!
I am in old man land now on cars. I want the options that I want, a very comfy and quiet ride, reliable, and I no longer give two fucks about “brand” from a coolness perspective.

Explorer Sport or Platinum w/ the twin turbo V6 is easily the best performance/$ - Platinum is about $50k and I think you can get a sport around $45k

$50k on a ford? come on broheim

I have an 2018 Armada (graphite color, 30k’ish miles) and it is too big. It also drinks gas like it’s crazed for booze and the gas is booze. Can’t park it without doing like 5 point turnabouts. It’s giant and comfy and feels fancy (for a Nissan), and powerful AF (395 hp, can tow 8,500) and I’m willing to part with it to you for a very fair price so slide into those DMs. I’m going to get a medium sized SUV instead like I should have when I bought this giant thing.

Redesign of the Grand Cherokee comes out in the fall (or thereabouts). First redesign since 2010!

eh, its only a couple grand more than the equivalent Highlander but the extra 100 ft-lbs of torque is priceless for victory at the LeMans on 135th

SUV but I was in a Kia SUV Rental and it impressed me quite a bit. I've read that they decided to upgrade quality in the new models and this thing was quiet as crap on the highway and had all the features you listed. Definitely changed my mind about Kia.
IKNOWRITE!
Hyundai Genesis 80 with AWD like this one is hard to beat - even better if you can find a private sale as they have 4/50k full warranty and 10/100k powertrain standardhttps://www.carmax.com/car/17262951 (https://www.carmax.com/car/17262951)

Yep, the Genesis (prolly a 2015 or 2016) is the leader in the clubhouse for me. They have more options than you can shake a stick at.

I'm about to hit 225k on my Corolla. After changing 2 ignition coils and the alternator I think I'll hit 300k. The hardest part might be paying to put new tires on a car with over 250k.
-
Need to buy a new-to-her sedan for @MrsWondermeal. She wants a hybrid (~40+ mpg), only drives in the city to and from work. Will probably go with a Fusion Hybrid from a rental car sales place because we can buy it online and be done with it. Have done this before and had no issues.
We both feel very Pete-ish about cars, and will take any other recommendos.

If you buy a former rental be aware that it has been driven and treated like a rental

My second car was a former rental convertible mustang
I test drove a 16 fusion and it's a very fun car but ultimately too cramped for me. Then I went to the 16 taurus and liked it a lot. Extremely comfortable and great ride (one of the best Uber cars from a passenger standpoint too). Was trying to downsize and ended up getting an explorer anyway, but would definitely reco either of those.
-
the idea that former rental cars are more risky than non-rentals is a myth. these are cars that are maintained more regularly than non-rentals and the large majority of people aren't taking them off-road and doing flips and stuff.
if i was looking to move cargo, i would look at the audi all road
i know, a station wagon clams?!! but they're pretty dope, so anyway

i love ramping crap with rental cars. curbs, speed bumps, you name it.

My Camry hit 225k last month and the rear struts are pretty much shot. Any chance I'm replacing those now? Hell naw. I did put new tires and an alternator in it last year tho, that's probably all the care it's going to get other than oil changes.

its four seats with little storage space, its not big at all

Now I get it. I thought you were saying the crosstrek was your “something bigger” but turned out to be not big enough (hence my WTF?), not that she vetoed something bigger and got the crosstrek instead.

There's way too many model choices and options. Then I looked at jeep and they've done the same thing. I hope I never have to buy a car again.
-
Base - road tires, no locker, no luxury, just basic 4wd vehicle
Big Bend - same as base but some aesthetic upgrades
--------
Black Diamond has the basics you need to off road (A/T tires, skid plates, rock rails, locker).
Outer Banks is that + interior luxury (like a Sahara)
Wildtrak is very desert racing specific (35" tires, upgraded suspension, different gear ratios). i can't imagine you'll see many of these.
Badlands is the most off road capable. basically a Rubicon (Black Diamond + 33" tires, disconnecting front sway bar, etc)
--------
First Edition - this is just a collector item that will be $60k+, only 3500 will be made.
-
Outer Banks.

If I had to buy a car now, I'd take my dog to the subaru place and let her pick which one she likes getting in and out of best from the ones that can adequately hold an inflatable boat and outdoors-y stuff.

It rides very smooth as a result. Though it can still tow more than I'd ever tow, and haul as much as I need to haul (e.g. half ton of landscape rock). Also, it has a trunk, and a power outlet and speakers in the bed! I have used the speakers in the bed only once, when unloading crap at the dump. I was blasting hair metal.

Ya and let's see a pic of this hot rod
-
it's just a stock 2000 4runner, nothing interesting. i don't drive it much, mostly just in the winter if i'm going to a muddy job site. maybe take it to the sierras 3-4 times a year.
i'm really befuddled on what to do with my car situation. i need to replace vehicles to replace both my automotive needs (a high mpg, comfortable vehicle for work, preferably with decent clearance for rough dirt roads and a vehicle with better clearance and traction for mud at work and hiking.
trying to decide between an awd hybrid suv crossover that could hopefully do both, just replacing the elantra with a hybrid sedan and keeping the 4runner for a bit longer or replacing the both of them now, with a hybrid sedan and not sure if with a real suv or crossover.
all the crossover suvs seem to suck for legroom. doesn't make sense to me, but whatever.

poor legroom, poor mpg.

you're loco ese they get around 25 in town 35 highway.. FIL is about 6'5" and fits in his fine :dunno:
-
the new hybrid rav4s get 40ish mpg, which is ok, but they aren't comfortable, front legroom is only 41 inches and the center console thing takes up a lot of room where you might otherwise be able to spread your knees. when i'm working, i will frequently spend 12-14 hours a day in my vehicle, so comfort/legroom is a priority.
toyota is coming out with a new hybrid based on the rav4 that is supposed to be a little longer, so i'm interested in seeing it, but in general toyota skimps on legroom, so i'm not super hopefully.

-

yeah, plus 42" doesn't really compete. the hyundai sonata has over 44", so that's sort of my benchmark. i understand taller cars have more upright seats, so it's not directly comparable, but 41" or so isn't really even really trying.
-

-
I want to say I don't care but I went from 13 to 16 and felt pretty good about it #green
-
i don't understand car makers. just make the seats go back farther, what does it cost you? if you ever have someone sitting behind you, you can just pull it forward. but make the front seats go back till the hit the rear seats for the 99.99% of the time there isn't.

My financial advisor who is 28 wants to get one of these. He drives an Accord right now and it only a few yrs old, but he's been in a few accidents with it. He likes his Accord but think's it will be more valuable for trade in with the low miles he has on it. He told me that even thou the BMW is hot AF, the insurance rate is lower since it is in the family car/SUV class. He works and lives in Dallas, so he needs a responsive car to commute to/from work. poor gas mileage.
i'm kinda hanging around waiting to see if kia or hyundai will add a hybrid version of their sorento/santa fe models for 2021. ford already makes one that maybe decent, but i dunno about ford.
and i also just can't decide btwn the two car - good gas mileage sedan plus a 4x4 plan like i currently have or the one car - awd crossover that kinda does both plan.
-
kia telluride got great reviews
-
yeah, hyundai/kia seems to be fairly well regarded on most vehicles (i'm somewhat loyal based on my elantra, which has treated me very well). the telluride/palisade is bigger than i want and i think they're less likely to get a '21 hybrid than the sorento/santa fes.
hyundai at least also almost always has among the most front legroom in any given vehicle class. not positive if kia follows suit.

If I was to get one, it would have to be top of the line and used. I can't afford to fork over 90K on a SUV. Also, my WA can afford one since he made over four hundred grand on stock investments last year.

I'm pretty sure any BMW from the past ~15 years that is automatic can be switched to a paddle manual shift. It's a little funky because there is not clutch but it still gives you the option.

Most of those types of cars have a dbl clutch transmission, which are manual. This type of transmission does not need an operator to engage a clutch for them to shift due to the way they operate. They are computer controlled with one clutch disengaging a gear as the other one engages next gear. These are faster at shifting and also save gas.

Can confirm.

If I'm buying that much motor meat, the fewer friends who are capable of operating it the better.

Up until my last 2 cars I have only owned manual cars. So I get it. I do miss the thrill of unnecessarily going up to 6k rpm because you need as much juice as possible for that brief period.
-
my last two M cars have been dual clutch. you know a lot of purists look down on them but they’re incredibly fun to drive, I never drive in automatic mode. always shift with the paddles

Need to replace my legacy soon. Would love to go with a 4Runner/Bronco type for the 1-2 times a year I might actually need it, but can’t justify it for a daily commuter. Also I really don’t want anything longer or wider then the current vehicle for garage space. AWD is a must and probably small suv instead of sedan so that I can throw the dog in the back. I feel like I’m pigeonholed into the Forester/RAV4/CRV segment and all its stereotypes. I’m sure there’s some higher end options, but I’m cheap and don’t care about driving something nicer. :dunno:

the good news is that a lot of automakers are coming out with pretty efficient hybrids now or next year in that section of the market.

Wagons are great! They have as much, or more, storage space as SUV's. With AWD, they also do just as well in the snow or off road (except the idiots that claim to do rock crawling but do it like once, maybe twice ever). However, wagons don't make your genitals look larger. So, Americans cannot drive them.

From a price point, I went with a lease return Ford Escape. Plenty of room for me and my usual travels. Fold the rear seats and my road bike fits with front tire attached. Plenty of room for my weekly luggage. 2.4L Turbo has enough power. No back issues as I've experienced with other vehicles.

i'm considering a crosstrek hybrid. the price to mileage/legroom doesn't seem quite as compelling as what i'm hoping for in the hyundai/kias when they come out, but it's definitely on the list

what i think i really want is to get a sonata hybrid and then have it lifted like 2 inches. but i don't even know if they do that and if so if everyone looks at you superweird when you drive it.
and also if it fucks something up or something.

my elantra has started overheating all the time. it's ok at night or in the morning when it's cool and it's ok on a flat highway when it's hot. but anything else and it's always trying to overheat.

What’s your definition of fuel efficient? They all get 30+ highway. Or are you looking for hybrid-like efficiency?
I’ve all but decided to get a Forester and have been emailing dealers. I’m not convinced some of these guys actually want to sell a car. One local place can’t figure out which cars they actually have on the lot and then can’t find the keys for some that are sitting there. Another place told me they don’t send quotes in writing. I’m probably going to end up flying to CoSprings or Omaha to a high volume dealer and driving home.

The manufacturers are very back logged on getting them cars for obvious reasons. A lot of them almost sold out of inventory a couple months back. Stuff shows up on their websites because it’s on order. Inventory should catch up soon.

in order from most efficient to least. from like 42 mpg to 35ish, iirc. all in the around 8" of ground clearance region.

My son and I went to suburu about two yrs. ago. They thought they had a for sure sale, since my son was driving an outback rental. He had wrecked his pickup and this is what the insurance company gave him. They let us test drive a forester and that was about all he wanted to look at. Tried to negotiate a deal and the most we could get was a $1,000 off. This was in August and typically a time when dealers will offer the most discounts for the year end cars. They are very proud of their vehicles and bragged on how efficient, longevity, and high resale. We basically said eff this bullshit and ended up buying an American made truck for over $15 grand off.

tdaver, this whole thing sounds ridiculous but I think you know that. Flying sucks right now. Long necessary driving sucks right now. Everything's inconvenient. In my experience, you get better service from a dealer you bought the car from than you would your local subaru dealer you spurned, if you'd be getting service from a dealer. I'd guess there could be some extra hoops to jump through with registration after buying out of state.
But if you're compelled to save $2K less expenses of the trip, don't pick the nearest places or even a destination place you're intrigued by. Pick based off what you want your first leisure road trip to be that will double as you having to drive home.
And you should probably transport something to further tip the scales in your favor, either as a good deed or for profit. Maybe adopt or facilitate the adoption of a dog from a place that's overburdened and bring the dog back to your town. Or take advantage of the post office being decimated and try to get people along the route to pay you to deliver things.
-
i bought my 4runner (used) in slc and my elantra in san jose, so i'm obviously fine with buying out of area. but, unless suburu does things totally different, your local dealers are not a static pricing situation. the brand incentives change all the time and dealerships often have quotas that they have to meet within a given time frame to receive payments from the brand that will make them more or less motivated to sell a vehicle. a dealer that laughs at your offer today may be perfectly happy to sell you the same car at that price in a week or a month.

Seems obvious but just get something used locally

That sucks but is a caveat to tdaver, make sure you’d have no issues going to or coming from any of these places.
-
I agree with all that. It seems stupid or ridiculous in this environment.
I don’t really want to fly anywhere and I really really don’t want to drive back from Omaha. Reno wouldn’t be terrible because I could take a morning flight and be home that evening.
I would much rather buy used and that may be as big of a mental hurdle to just buying something than the travel stuff. But local options are limited and are listed higher than the new cars out of state.
And it’s not an affordability issue, I just want a good deal.
Yep, it’s stupid. But it’s $2k.
-
Also should mention my current car needs new tires very soon (not to mention some other work) and I don’t want to spend that money just to replace the car in few months. Thus the push to do something now.
-
But it’s $2k.
With what you'd have to spend and go through, it's not $2k.
-
Also should mention my current car needs new tires very soon (not to mention some other work) and I don’t want to spend that money just to replace the car in few months. Thus the push to do something now.
If you're buying new, end of the year is when they have the best deals. I'm not talking about bullshit factory rebates, but good old fashion dealer needing to reduce inventory for tax purposes. They will negotiate with you and you'll still get whatever factory incentives offered. Just remember one discount comes from the factory and one from the dealer's pocket. This advice is from 45 years of buying and selling cars experience.
-
But it’s $2k.

Yeah I’ve got skymiles out the wazoo plus gas and a drive thru burger. It’s really not much money. Just the time commitment sucks.

problem solved because the last local place that I had given up on just came back at $600 over.
nice. this is a forester? would you mind sharing the price?

Depending how big the subaru and small the kids, it could be the whole travel baseball team!

MSRP 33.2
Invoice 30.7
OMA/COS/RNO 29.4-29.6
You can get a new forester a lot cheaper than this, but I had to load it up to get a couple options that I wanted.
-
But it’s $2k.
With what you'd have to spend and go through, it's not $2k.
maybe it's like credit card/travel points and miles and he just gets horny AF about maximizing value there. I can very hornily relate.
I’m getting horned up just thinking about our next car purchase. Plan is to get some
new cc w/ a sick bonus, go to dealership, pressure them down on price, use cc to purchase car outright, get a bazillion bonus points and spend points, get on phone and pay cc immediately, drive home in newly purchased car while dreaming about sick vacation we just schemed.

Yea, it costs them around 2.5%. That adds up on a large purchase.

Yeah I looked into that a couple years ago and there's a CC surcharge. I remember thinking that it was probably a net loss in terms of points and total sale amount.
-
I was just told I could put $2500 on a card, but I’ve heard of up to $5000 before.

1. utility/opportunity+expendable price point. This is her car. I don't really like it. cubes were sold in us but this one is still pretty weird. It has a hilariously small 3rd row seat bench that pops up in the back. you have to take the headrests off and they mount on holes in the side panel that are also the 3rd row cupholders. there are also 1000 storage cubbies. It has a TV tuner, but it doesnt work because of the switch to digital broadcast.
anyway, we just get the cheapest car that fits our needs at the moment we need it.
I do really want to get something weird/cool to take back. Delica space gear or starwagon is at the top of the list.
2. its a shock at first. We got driven around alot before we ever drove ourselves, so my brain was already adapted before driving. Now i can switch back and forth completely in about 2 days. every now and then i still have a brain fart and mess up, but its probably been 1.5 years since i last drove on the wrong side of the road.
its easier driving here because the roads are always crowded and you just do whatever everyone else is doing. going back to kansas is hard because you might be totally alone trying to decide which lane to turn in to.
-
Lol that third row sounds amazing. Would like to see pics of you in it
-
this was the last time:
alot of the stoplights have lights facing both directions. the main road near my house is like a divided boulevard. it was early in the morning and there was nobody around. i mindlessly turned left into the far lane (like an american) and stopped at the stop light. there was a red light facing me. after a few seconds a car pulled up to the intersection directly across from me, facing me in the same lane at the same red light. i was super confused and assumed it was somebody on the wrong side of the road, until i saw a car pull up to the intersection on the correct side next to me.
when the light turned green i gassed it diagonal across the intersection to the correct side.
i felt shame

When my 03 Corolla was on its last legs (205k miles) something similar would happen about every other month where I would go to start it but nothing happened. I would just disconnect the battery cables and put them back on it it would work fine for some reason. I drove that thing for another 2 years because I figured it wasn't worth it to fix it correctly.

It cost me $80 to fix

wife used to commute omaha to lincoln every day. so we had her in a civic originally and now an accord. she's starting to realize she can be as effective from home and may only commute to lincoln 3 days'ish once stuff is normalized. thinking of getting her the new 2022 MDX and myself like a 4 door jeep or defender or something with IMPLIED truck nuts but not like physical truck nuts dangling and crap.

A month ago I bought a 2000 Toyota Tundra double cab. While looking for a truck I became obsessed with the size of the 1st gen Tundras. They're not super huge truck nuts trucks so they will fit in the garage but they still have a V8 and a 6.5 ft bed. They're the perfect size of truck in between mid size and full size. By the way, it only had 61K miles on it. Wow! :horrorsurprise: Bought it from an 85 year old gentlemen who bought it new when he was 65 and had barely driven it the last 10 years. I want to drive it to like 250K hopefully.
Also we traded in our Toyota Sienna for a Buick Enclave.
So now you're up to date on _33 and family's car dealings.

I don't have anything to put in the back of them that wouldn't be better served inside an enclosed SUV area thing? I grew up on a cow farm, I've driven more types and styles of trucks than anyone on this message board probably. I love a utilitarian truck.

I am looking at I getting a 2022 Honda Civic for commuting. We will only use the van for road trip type stuff and hybrids are still too expensive to make it worth the while. I probably won't actually buy this and will continue to drive my 2007 Honda Accord, but I think this is the next move unless I can hold out long enough for the EV space to drive down prices a bit more with GM ramping up their lineup.

i reserved mine on the day they were announced and hope I take delivery in 2021. heard recently they were up to 170k reservations, not all of which will turn into actual orders but I would definitely expect your order to be built in 2022.
Any update on your reservation, clams? I got an email this week saying that it would be May before I can come into the dealership to finalize my order.

I would need to read a bit more about battery lifetime on early EVs, but I would be pretty skeptical.

I'd be curious what info you'd find. IIRC it's dependent on the manufacture/model. I thought early teslas batteries were holding up relatively well.

I drove a hybrid 30K miles a year between Louisville and Cleveland. 2012ish Toyota Prius C. Great commuter car IMO. Perfect grocery getter too. Hell, I put 20 bags of mulch in it once. Squatted the rear a bit though. :)

Yeah, early Leafs aren't great but I think 2013 on is pretty good. Leafs have been on the roads for ten years and I think there have been like 4 or 5 battery updates.

Oh yeah, I have that for the front panels of my jeep roof, but I only use that if I’m already out and want to take those off, or if I’m going out and know it might rain before I can get back.
I don’t get why one would care about lugging around the front panels if the other panels are left home. :dunno:
Especially if you’ll be getting the bronco when the weather’s nice, you’d want to have an immediate plan for being able to easily store the entire roof and doors at home so you can do the fun stuff right away.
I’ve got a rack that pretty space-efficiently holds whatever roof I’m not using and doors, windows, etc. I haven’t used it much though since my suburban friend kicked it out of his garage.

Thinking about getting a car. Wrangler maybe, IDK? It’s snowed like 2 feet here in the last two weeks and not melted so snow ability is necessary. Probably only drive a couple times a week, and not that many miles. Grocery store, golf course, gym basically. Wife has an SUV, we’ve had one car between us for 6 years, but I’d like to get a second.

Every car has snow ability if you live in Chicago and have the right tires IMO. (Based on my time in west michigan owning two front wheel drive sedans)

Could be true. My experience is mostly seeing people constantly getting stuck in their street parking spots after the plows come through and pushing a foot and a half of snow against their left tires.

They probably have bad tires though

I got it up to about 150,000 miles. When I got rid of it, I was putting in 1 quart of oil per gas fillup. Gas cap was behind the back license plate.
Great car.

i believe all this to be true but at the same time could never purchase or own or even just drive a rav4 because of the name. rav4? uh not thanks kimmie nicole.
The newer Rav4's look kinda tough :dunno:
-
then they should change the name to pretty much anything but rav4
-
Or, get two smart cars and go around parking them in one parking stall. really just out there sticking it to the man.
-
wrong thread, smart car talk in the other thread. my bad.

They sell build about 200k Jeep Wranglers a year. The Bronco has 190k currently reserved and nobody has actually seen one in person yet.
actually saw a Blue 4 door Bronco crossing Rabbit Ears Pass on the way to Steamboat yesterday - it looked smaller than a 4 door Wrangler

Bronco Sport. The full size Broncos won’t be seen anywhere until next month.

I think I'm going to get one of those new 3 row grand cherokees this spring. unless they look stupid in person.
I'm not a Jeep brand guy but when I saw the Grand Cherokee L I was pretty impressed. It's the size I'm going after. Seems to have luxury features and a pretty decent towing package.
Looks pretty hot.

I like those a lot and drove one. My feeling after doing so was that I liked it a lot for me not having any kids. Felt like that interior would be completely trashed by muddy baseball shoes and wet swimsuits and stuff. Same with the Q7. I assume this Jeep will be more fit for that stuff. mrs. dave's comment was something like "it seems too nice for what our kids are going to do to it".

The SteveDave's of the world should be looking at slightly used luxury vehicles.
I just picked up a 2007 Lexus ES 350 for $8,500 cash. It had 26K miles on it.

Damn, jealous. Those older Lexus will run forever too.

Am also jealous. Pretty amazing to find a 13yo car with only 26K miles. Little old lady who kept it in her garage all the time?

It's prolly a Camry that they slapped Lexus emblems on, and rolled back the odometer. Haha

i mean. it's a lexus es 350. what are the chances that the previous owner isn't a 90 year old grandma, is less than zero possible in this case?

The es 350 is pretty common family car in Joco. My guess is that the LS would be a more likely old lady car....husband dies and she just keeps driving it to church/temple, etc.
-
p amaze to have the family car accumulate exactly 2000 miles per year for 13 straight years
-
In the late 80's my dad bought a 1964 Chevy Belair from an old lady in Lyndon KS, which had 50,000 miles on it and we thought was pretty amazing at the time.

CarFax indicates family inheritance and quick trade.
Except for a scratch on the back bumper (appt next week) and some road rash on the wheels (deciding between local refurb or just ordering refurb'd wheels) car is in perfect condition.

I like how jobu has been able to open our third eye to see that lexus shares platforms with toyota
