Got a car question for any motor heads out here on gE.

I've bought an 06 Rav4 a couple of years ago that now has 180k on it that I use as my cat ranch/vision question vehicle. Worked fine and drove it 2000 miles this July when I was out vision questing. A couple of weeks ago I was going to take it out the the farm but right when I was about the leave the car wouldn't start, didnt even try and turn over. I had driven it maybe once in the last month and it had the same battery as when I bought it so I replaced the battery and it started right up.

I made it out to Hays with no issues where I stopped to get gas, started fine after that but when I rolled into the Wendy's drive through next door my battery light came on. As I was pulling out my dashboard lit up like a christmas tree and I lost power steering etc, was able to park it in the wendy's parking lot. Wouldnt start and barely tried to turn over. I disconnected the battery cables/put them back on but same thing.

Called a tow truck since I figured it was a big issue, they tested the battery etc, said it was fine and gave me a jump start. I drove back to KC with no issues and it has been starting fine ever since. I took it up to my local O'Reillys where they ran the tests on my starter/alternator/etc and everything came back fine.

Any ideas on what the issue is/was? I'm assuming it has to be the alternator but it tested out fine at O'Reillys and the car has been running good for the past 2 weeks. pls help me

I still think it's the alternator, they can fool the tests

I’d bet anything that it’s the alternator

This motorhead recommends checking out the alternator as your first move.

The tow truck tested battery and it was fine? I had similar issues once when my battery cables had a crack in the clamp and it wasnt always making good connection. Maybe try cleaning the connections, applying dielectric grease, checking integrity and tightening clamps? Might be worth a shot before buying an alternator.

Went ahead and bought a Camry (again). With what's going on in the CF3 family it didn't make sense to buy an SUV or something more expensive.

That was quick. I was going to suggest a Nissan Leaf if this was a second car

retiring my 2004 camry.  :bawl:

over 270,000 miles, but just too many costly repairs to make it worth it anymore.

I am gonna buy something just for me and I don't really give a crap about cars other than will it get me to my destination. what should I buy?

Probably a Camry.

You're welcome.

add another vote for cables/connections over alternator.

Use some baking soda/water and scrub your terminals/cables.  I had some buildup once that caused similar problems.

I don't think it's cables because it was still turning over but slowly. A bad connection would make it go completely dead wouldn't it? :dunno:

Alternatively we could recruit an auto technician that’s funny AF and may like KSU (not required).

I am basing my advice on the fact that I replaced my battery THIS VERY WEEKEND. The only time the car had been moved in the last two weeks was to change the side of the street for street cleaning and I was going to move it again and it was completely dead. Battery was kinda old and we had a dead battery not too long ago so I thought I'd just get a new one. Swapped it out and THE NEW ONE ALSO DIDN'T WORK. Like didn't click or anything. Did some "investigation" and saw one of the terminals was caked with that gunky powdery crap. So I kind of beat the crap out of it and scraped it off with pliers (no brush, wrong size wrenches) and then that baby runs like a dream.

But when it didn't work, it wasn't like "oh, it's so hard to start", it was just a click and completely off when the starter kicked in.

SteveDave, I’ve never met an auto technician that is funny AF. Just in my own IMO though.
