When picking out an apple to buy at the grocery store I just decide how much I feel like eating and buy the apple according to size. Sometimes I just get one of each variety.

here's another fun fact about apples: I have no idea what the differences is between apples beyond red and green. some are better than others but I just always figure that depends on how old they are.

you should read a book about apples.  amazingly variable fruit.

imo, the most important characteristic of an apple for raw eating is crunchiness.  i'm fine with an acidic apple or a sweet apple and don't go too overboard about any of the subtle flavors.  it's all about the texture.

Yes and this is what makes red delicious apples so pathetic.

I thought that crunchiness was inversely proportional to age of the apple.

Jonathans pair really well with both peanut butter and gouda(separately.  I am not a monster).  They have great crispness and are not overly sweet.  That is why they are superior.

ecokat, could you please answer my question about how you handled the apple while paying (it was before everyone else started posting stupid things btw)

I really don't even remember it being an issue. I'm guessing that either I just had my debit card in my back pocket like I usually do or @winters4ksu paid for it

I thought that crunchiness was inversely proportional to age of the apple.

age and growing conditions impact crunchiness, but it's mostly a function of apple variety.  or maybe it's better to say that apple variety delimits the range of possible textures.

here's a little apple factoid- the average time between when an apple is picked, until it hits a store shelf, is 14 months

I was amazed to find out this is pretty much true.  Sounded rediculous, but it's not.

I'm shamed that I doubted you clams.

Is that intentional?  Like, a ripening time or something?
