yellowstone, grand canyon or toronto
« on: May 08, 2015, 02:21:37 PM »
thinking about taking a week off and loading the family in the station wagon and then taking off somewhere this summer. i would actually like to go fairly far away, but not too far. making stops along the way and then probably take a different way back. just do stuff and see things. all three of those places are about exactly 16 hours from mhk. where should we go?

Yellowstone and Grand Canyon are currently 1 and 2 on my list of places I want to see.  As Puni said above, hold off on Grand Canyon until it's not hotter than balls.

i was actually surprised toronto was as close as yellowstone. i dunno. seems like it would be fun to go there and observe all the whacky stuff they probably do, that we just don't know about.

not sure. also, it's not like we wouldn't stop in cities on the way to a national park or stop at parks on the way to a big city. the destination is a destination i guess but it's also going to serve as the place where the station wagon turns around and starts heading home. probably looking at a 9 day trip with most in a hotel and some in a tent. 6/3?

I don't think Toronto is as unique as the parks. I guess if you've been to both of the parks and not Toronto I'd choose Toronto.

That's a good route from CF3, but add Grand Teton since you're already there.

The Grand Canyon trip has lots of possibilities as well.  Pick 2 routes
1) Taos, Santa Fe, ABQ, Petrified Forest
2) Zion, Bryce, Cap Reef, Canyonlands, Arches, Moab, and plenty of stops off I70 through CO
3) Monument Valley, Mesa Verde, Durango, Great Sand Dunes, Pikes Peak

If you head through the Estes Park/Grand County area, I will meet you for a beer.  Can also probably help your crew out with a place to stay for a night

A loop through Badlands, Rushmore, Yellowstone, and Tetons is an awesome summer road trip. Estes and surrounding RMNP are great but you're probably biting off too much for a week.

Also, winter in Yellowstone is amazing if the kids are old enough for snowmobiles. Winter wildlife watching in the park is better as the bison and other animals gather around the hot pools. Do summer and winter trips at some point if you can.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, K-State fans could have beheaded the entire KU team at midcourt, and K-State fans would be celebrating it this morning.  They are the ISIS of Big 12 fanbases.

Wait a second.  Maybe it's the grand canyon.  I mean, if Yellowstone blows up, it will probably fill the grand Canyon with ash and you won't be able to see it anymore.   Oh man.  Conflicted.

I think CF3's itinerary sounds amazing, too. On the other hand, there's lots of HGTV real estate action in Toronto.

I assume they'll be fine to leave in the backyard while we are gone to work each day?

Yellowstone might get on your nerves but the kids will love it. They'll see lots of wildlife and waterfalls and bubbly steamy weird natural wonder thingys. You'll curse under your breath at backed-up traffic and idiots standing in the road trying to photograph bison and such. Stay at Old Faithful lodge or maybe the Madison campground. Cody Wyoming is a good stop on your loop. Consider jumping just a few miles out of the park into Montana to the lodge at Chico Hot Springs near Gardner...great pools and dining options. There is a decent KOA at Jackson Hole with inexpensive cabins and a pool, great kid place. All of these need you to get on some reservations asap.
