probably Option 3. i will certainly read Messiah and that will likely carry me into wanting to read everything in the series that was written by Frank Herbert himself.
re: Option 5, the version of Dune i read had an epilogue that was written by his son. when he said that he continued the Dune series and wrote books himself, i was instantly skeptical. that sounds bad and confirmed why a couple people told me not to bother with the later books. so i won't be touching option 5.
