There's a ton of average white dudes that hold racist views and don't accept it. That is a problem.
Oh I completely agree. I'm just saying that racism is a spectrum and one end of that spectrum results in a LOT more harm than the other end. The author agrees that it's a spectrum, but insists that we immediately start using labels that apply to both ends of the spectrum and do not allow for clarity about which end of the spectrum you are referring to.
I contend that the labels for violent extremists and the labels for mildly intolerant people shouldn't be the same. I'm OK with putting a label on it, but let's acknowledge the spectrum. crap, use t-shirt sizes if you want. "That guy is an XL racist, and that other guy is a M racist."
I sort of "get" why the author is doing this...she wants to drive recognition of what racist behavior really is, and make people take ownership of their racist behavior. That's a good thing, and I don't want to be overly critical of her very noble goals. Let's just make sure that we don't confuse Arian Brotherhood members with average Catbackers.
