The university should be able to expel whoever they want to, as long as they aren't discriminating. I do think the media is letting them off the hook too easily, though. OU was associated with this racist institution, so they should share some of the blame.

Public uni,though.

Public unis have academic standards and codes of conduct, too.

Maybe I am wrong, but public universities, funded by govt money, shouldn't be able to kick out citizens who have the right to say what they want.  That seems like the govt limiting free speech

Not really. The university has a code of conduct that these guys agreed to and failed to honor.

I'm not certain they were "expelled"... The verbiage that was used by Rice in his statement/apology was that he "withdrew" from OU.

That leads me to believe that Boren pulled the "you can either withdraw or be expelled" angle on them.  Obviously, withdrawing will look far better on their records for the long haul and it serves as a CYA move for OU as legally expulsions would be pretty hard to defend as I understand it.

Totally agree. I'm thinking of organizations of adults with some sort of official membership and traditionally sung songs. Shriners? Elks? Frats, apparently. I would feel stupid singing songs like that, which means that everyone else should, too.

Is SAE still a crap show at ksu? They had about the best frat location, and about the worst crew of doods.

Given the fact that every college kid is currently equipped with a video camera capable of live streaming to the web, it actually says a lot that these types of "outings" are so few and far between.

i really liked the SAEs that i knew but then again it was a house of like 100 people that was more than likely filled w/ bad guys and good guys. from the people i knew, i really, really don't think it was some kind of weird racist ksu place.

How old are you? When I was there they had like 17 active members.  None were known racists.  I think delta tau delta is the racist house.

Pretty sure the Delt house is no more. Did drink there a bit when I was 19.

kind of old but then again i'm young enough to know that dtd isn't even around anymore and they weren't racisty when i was there.

there were also more than 17 people just in the SAE pledge class my freshman year. i wasn't an SAE, but they were pretty strong when i was there and very decent guys out of the guys i knew.

i would say that 15% of my ksu fraternity pledge class at ksu were racisty enough that it made me uncomfortable though. it was weird. you get twenty to thirty random kansas guys together and some are likely to have different opinions than you do (or at least what i did). i stuck it out for a while and then dropped back to my highschool friends. but i also grew up in mhk and had the best friends in the world so it was a pretty easy choice.

I would guess that if you hung out with the OU SAE's outside of their house you wouldn't think they're super weird racists either

what i am telling you is that i had a bunch of ksu SAE's that i was pretty close to that weren't super racisty and some ksu people in my own fraternity that were. my point i guess if i have one is that you probably shouldn't judge someone from that fraternity just by the actions of others and you super shouldn't judge someone from a different college based on the actions of those from the same fraternity from a different college.

I'm not judging any individual, I'm judging/questioning the overall culture that enables this type of behavior.

then i would suggest to judge/question the overall culture that enables this type of behavior to exist as a high school senior and then move up to college freshman. because it starts there.

as a mhk high school grad it was shocking/baffling/embarrassing/maddening and a million other things to see it in other college freshman.

I think I can judge/question both the upbringing of these guys as well as social fraternity culture in general. I know that universities can exert more influence on one  than the other.

I mean, it all depends on the group of guys.  Peer pressure can be good.  I can say that I'm confident that there were a number of hayseedy quasi-racisty guys that entered DU who dropped those ideas/habits extremely quickly due to positive influences and exposure to real life minorities in our house.

I think that if there's a bunch of dumbass racists all living under one roof together, then yeah, it's going to continue to breed dumbass racist culture.  But if there's enough smart, well liked dudes with decent world-views, then frats can be a breeding ground for positive influences.  Maybe that's idealistic, but I can say that I think I'm a better/more well rounded dude than I would've been had I not joined.

I'm sure you're right. However, couldn't the same be said about any group of intelligent people living together without a Greek social fraternity affiliation?
