So is there some kind of a debate ITT or are we just making fun of OU?

this isn't a fraternity thing, or a greek system thing, or a college kid thing.  it's a societal thing that exists and is protected in our country.
people want to act like you can flip a switch and turn this stuff off after it's been going on for a few hundred years.  and some people don't want to change and that should be their prerogative.
kicking the SAE's off of OU's campus changes very little in Norman, OK.   you mean to tell me that there are racist privileged frat boys in oklahoma?  sorry, i'm not buying it.

There would not be kids on a party bus singing this song without SAE and their culture which is supported by a national organization going back to the antebellum south along with support from OU. You'll have racist privileged kids, but they wouldn't act like this on their own or in any modern organization.

do you really believe that they wouldn't be singing/saying racists stuff outside of/without the sponsorship of, SAE?  give me a break.

not like this, no. This was way worse than anything you'd see on any campus without the support of fraternities.

i would guess that the real racist hayseeds on OU's campus don't have the social and financial means to survive fraternity life.  i would also guess that the majority of kids that have sung this song are simpletons who are just repeating things that they've heard their older brothers or fathers say and acting in a similar fashion.   i'd bet that a lot of these guys "have black friends" on campus.

the stuff that you refer to as "way worse" definitely occurs outside of the SAE house.

a couple of people who have graduated college are still talking about how they hate fraternities. theres a debate going on with some pretty alarming numbers but obviously no sources to back them up. a few people are making fun of texas and oklahoma but its more background noise.

Pretty accurate assessment here. Really I just wish we were making fun of OU and enjoying watching them crumble, though.

the real amusing part, to me, is how this was clearly done to show off for their dates.

Let's not be sexist, the girls probably liked it.
If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

hahaha, in your face, Eugene Volokh!

I think it's clear from the wording of the University's response that D-Bo & Co. have in mind Tinker vs. Des Moines in which the Supreme Court ruled that students' first amendment rights can only be prohibited by school administrators if they could show that it would cause a substantial disruption of the school's educational mission.  D-Bo's response cites the creation of a "hostile learning environment for others."

Yeah, but Tinker was a junior high or something.  There's authority that says universities are different.

If these kids/ACLU care to challenge this, they'd win.

It seems like a junior high would have more trouble winning than a university.

Nah.  College students have more speech protection.  Free exchange of ideas more associated with university setting than in lower levels.  Junk like that.
