And Scott and Weiberg made one critical mistake in the courtship of the Big 12. Other than its somewhat foggy math that a 16-team Pac-10 could readily get to $20 million in TV revenue per school, they wanted to substitute Kansas for Oklahoma State late in the process, according to multiple sources in the Big 12.

Texas was really starting to feel queasy now, sources said. UT officials knew deep down Texas A&M wasn't coming to the Pac-10, despite Bill Byrne's assurances, according to sources. And now Scott and Weiberg were looking to dump Oklahoma State in favor of Kansas. If A&M was a no-show, the Pac-10 would add Utah. Scott was looking to add new TV markets, not stick to the deal that was agreed upon a few days earlier.

According to sources who talked to me Tuesday (two days after the fact), Dodds and Plonsky couldn't stop thinking about all the negatives. And now they were dealing with a wheeler-dealer Pac-10 commissioner who wanted to sub out Boone Pickens' Cowboys for the chance to grab new households in Kansas, Missouri and middle America.

But, but, but... KU was just as desperate as K-State was!!!! The Pac 10 wanted Utah over KU!!!!

 :flush:

Do you realize that this means the hypothetical decision to take KU over OSU caused Texas to pull out of the agreement?  Texas couldn't stand the idea of taking KU to the Pac10 with them.

It's kinda like when the fat kid who craps his pants and eats his boogers gets picked to be on your kickball team, and you'd rather just not play kickball at all than to play with that kid.  Pretty much exactly like that.

Instead of the snow angel skit, I would like to approach it from a GTA standpoint.  Willy, in car, pulls up next to Dr Tom and Dr Toms hops in.  Some money is exchanged and Dr Tom fellates Willy enthusiastically.  Dr Tom gets out of the car and goes off on his way.  Willy gets out of the car and hits Dr Tom repeatedly with a bat, until Dr Tom gives Willy his money back.  Willy gets back in car (convertable, so we can see the encounter) and cruises away listening to some sweet 90s tunes.  End scene.
That sounds more like what Texas has done to us...  :frown:

Nebraska's academics fall short of Big Ten rivals
By MICHAEL SANSERINO Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Updated: 06/15/2010 11:38:11 PM EDT

Less than a week after Big Ten leaders chided reporters and sports fans for overlooking the importance of academics in college football conference expansion, the Big Ten introduced its newest member in Nebraska, which will become the worst-performing academic member of the conference, according to several academic measures.
Following a June 6 meeting in Chicago of the Big Ten's Council of Presidents/Chancellors, Michigan State president Lou Anna Simon, the council's chairwoman, told reporters that academics was purposely at the top of a list of four criteria that guided the Big Ten's expansion search.

"I've facetiously said that at the start of this process, if we had given fifth-graders the criteria, the list of institutions would be essentially the list of institutions that have been bandied about for quite a while by (the media) with much more sophisticated analysis of the sense of fit," Dr. Simon said. "But as I look at your analysis, academics hasn't been much of the conversation. That's an important component of this."

Nebraska scores poorly academically when compared with its peers, according to the Center for Measuring University Performance, which compares the country's top research institutions. The center publishes an annual report, comparing universities on nine different criteria, such as research expenditures, doctorates awarded and endowment size.

When compared with their public or private peers, four of the 12 Big Ten schools -- Illinois, Michigan,

Northwestern and Wisconsin -- were ranked among the top 25 schools nationally in all nine categories, and each current member ranked among the top 25 in at least four categories.
Nebraska was not ranked among the top 25 in any category.

Penn State University was ranked in eight categories. The University of Pittsburgh, a Big East member long considered a candidate for Big Ten expansion, was ranked in all nine.

Other schools rumored for Big Ten expansion fared better than Nebraska in the center's analysis. Maryland was ranked in four categories while Rutgers and Notre Dame were ranked in three.

U.S. News & World Report, in its annual list of America's top colleges, ranked Nebraska 96th among national universities. No current Big Ten school was ranked lower than 71. Penn State is 47th, and Pitt is 56th.

Notre Dame is 20th, Maryland is 53rd, Syracuse is 58th and Rutgers is 66th. Missouri, which is 102nd, is the only rumored Big Ten candidate ranked lower than Nebraska.

Nebraska awarded fewer doctorates than any Big Ten university in 2008, and in 2007, the most recent data available, Nebraska invested fewer dollars in research than any Big Ten school other than Indiana.

Academic concerns are noteworthy in Big Ten expansion because, in addition to athletic competition, Big Ten schools collaborate on research projects and other academic endeavors in the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, a consortium of research universities that pools resources to enhance academic collaboration.

Before Nebraska announced it was joining the Big Ten, Dr. Simon said the conference was looking for new members that would actively participate in the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, composed of Big Ten schools and the University of Chicago. The committee was created in 1958 so that the University of Chicago -- an original Big Ten member that left the conference in 1946 -- could continue to share academic resources with Big Ten schools.

The Big Ten's presidents and chancellors listed competitiveness, institutional fit and fiscal responsibility as the three other criteria that will guide expansion.

Nebraska's move to the Big Ten could also strain the conference's student-athletes, who will have to travel farther to compete and will likely miss more class time as a result.

At a news conference announcing the school's move to the Big Ten, Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne sounded unsure if the departure from the Big 12 would mean more travel time for student-athletes.

"We may have to fly a little more," he said, "(but) the connections will be a little bit better."

The Big Ten's academic leaders defended Nebraska's scholastic reputation.

Rodney Erickson, Penn State provost and chairman of the committee, said the consortium will be stronger with the addition of Nebraska and dismissed any notion that the school was a sub-par academic institution.

"I have no concerns personally. ... We think they would be a strong addition to the group," Dr. Erickson said.

Nebraska has a "strong academic profile" in areas that are already well represented by Big Ten schools, such as agriculture and engineering, Dr. Erickson said.

Since 1909, Nebraska has been a member of the Association of American Universities, an invitation-only organization of the nation's top 63 research institutions. Every Big Ten school is an AAU member, but five current Big Ten members, including Penn State, joined the association after 1909, which Dr. Erickson also cited to credit Nebraska.

Jean Landa Pytel, chairwoman of Penn State's University Faculty Senate, said the school's faculty has not been consulted about conference expansion.

"This is an athletic issue," Dr. Pytel said. "We're the academic arm. That is purely a business decision. ... We haven't been involved in the conversation, so I guess I have to have faith in the president that he knows what he's doing."

Barbara Allen, director of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, said the consortium's staff is "curious" about Big Ten expansion and that "questions will come up" about the academic acumen of any potential member. But she, like Dr. Pytel, has faith the conference's presidents and chancellors will keep academics in mind as the Big Ten continues to explore expansion.

"What I believe is they'll make the best decisions that will benefit the whole spectrum of our universities," she said. "I don't need to sit and armchair quarterback their decisions."

Fifteen minutes later, when the Kansas locker room opened its doors to the media, the Jayhawks were still crying. Literally, bawling. All of them. I've never seen anything like it, and I've seen devastated college locker rooms -- after losses in the Final Four, the national championship game -- ever

Talk about it in Inside the 40 Acres
Just when it looked like realignment in college athletics might be winding down, multiple sources in the Big 12 told Orangebloods.com Arkansas has put out feelers about a possible move to the Big 12 to reconnect with rivals like Texas and Texas A&M.

Those sources said Arkansas currently doesn't have the votes among the Big 12 schools to join the league. But those sources said they would need to see how the television money would work if adding a school or two to know if they'd vote for expansion.

Orangebloods.com had heard from two sources in the Big 12 about interest from Arkansas over the weekend. But Orangebloods.com decided not to report it because it was too volatile and could have been used as a bluff by other Big 12 schools as a way to try and drive Texas A&M back to the Big 12 and away from its discussions with the Southeastern Conference.

Could Bobby Petrino and the Hogs be headed to the Big 12? Sources in the Big 12 tell OB the Hogs have put out feelers about joining the Big 12.
But Tom Keegan of the Lawrence Journal-World reported Thursday, according to sources close to Jones, that Jones wants Arkansas and Notre Dame in the Big 12.

The Big 12 title game is under contract to be played at Cowboys Stadium for the next four years. But after the departure of Nebraska and Colorado, the Big 12 will no longer qualify for a title game after the 2010 season. Under NCAA rules, a league must have 12 schools to qualify for a championship game.

So it would make sense that Jones would want two more teams in the Big 12 so the league would be able to play its title game in Cowboys Stadium for years to come.

But sources close to Jones said Thursday he has nothing to do with Arkansas' decision making and could't be further from anything having to do with college realignment.

"He's got too much else to do," the source close to Jones said.

SOURCES: ARKANSAS EYEING BIG 12

Orangebloods.com contacted three exeuctive sources in the Big 12 on Thursday and was told by one executive that Arkansas joinining the Big 12 was "a long shot."

Another said, "Arkansas has definitely put feelers out about joining the Big 12."

A third executive said, "If anybody can make the math (money) work, it's Jerry Jones."

That executive went on to lay out the only scenario he thought it might work for the Big 12: if the money can be adjusted by the Big 12 TV partners - ABC/ESPN and Fox Sports Net - to accommodate Arkansas (possibly with the help of Jerry Jones), then adding Arkansas could make sense, the source said.

That source went on to say if Arkansas joined the Big 12 and realignment started back up with the SEC having to replace a school and possibly looking to get to 14 or even 16, Notre Dame could be back in play.

Several sources, including a source close to the discussions that took place between Notre Dame and the Big Ten over the past month, indicated Notre Dame would remain independent unless it appeared super conferences were forming.

And now that the Big Ten is at 12 schools already, Notre Dame might be more interested in joining the Big 12, where it might be the 12th school added to the league (along with Arkansas).

Notre Dame could also explore having its own TV network inside the Big 12, whereas that would not be an option in the Big Ten, which has a conference network that requires everyone to share their inventory.

A source close to Texas said athletic director DeLoss Dodds and Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick have "a very close" relationship. The source said Dodds has helped serve as a mentor to Swarbrick since Swarbrick took over as Notre Dame's AD in June of 2008.

ARKANSAS DENIES LOOKING AROUND

Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long issued a statement Wednesday denying any reports that the Razorbacks are looking around.

"In recent weeks and months there has been much national dialogue regarding conference affiliation in intercollegiate athletics," Long said.

"In the course of that dialogue some have suggested that the University of Arkansas was an institution that may be pursued by other conferences.

"From the beginning, we have been very clear that the University of Arkansas is a proud member of the Southeastern Conference and has no interest in joining another conference.

"Chancellor Gearhart has been unwavering in his support of our institution's continued membership in the SEC. Recent events have not in any way altered our commitment or desire to remain a member of what we believe is the strongest conference in the nation."

BIG 12 STAYING AT 10?

Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe said Tuesday in a teleconference his league is not looking to expand.

But two of the Big 12 executives Orangebloods.com spoke to on Thursday said they fear there will be a push by some, especially in Texas, to add at least two more schools from within the state.

"There will be a push by state schools like the University of Houston, especially among lawmakers and at the regent level, to get into the Big 12," the source said.

Beebe has repeatedly said if the Big 12 was to expand it would be outside the current geographical footprint of the conference.

Arkansas and South Bend, Ind., are certainly outside the current geographical footprint of the new, 10-member Big 12.

Stay tuned.

If I had my choice and it was a football related issue I would rather have TCU than Houston.  Although that would mean not Patterson some day I would guess.  Also would love to get ND but I don't see it happening.  Would be fun to rub the Big televen/twelves face in it, since they really really want them.
