I know, I know "talk radio"...posting this for posterity...

Yesterday Soren Petro from 810 was particularly fired up about the notion of KU to the Big 10 and had a lengthy debate with Gottlieb about it.  Petro then goes on to ask oscar Weber he thoughts on it...asking Weber if he has heard anything about KU to the Big 10.

Gottlieb poo-poo's it, not because he didn't think that they could, but his argument was why would they want to.  Then goes on to point out the obvious hypocrisy if they were to leave, when compared to their stance on Mizzou.    Their only material disagreement was on the GOR...where Petro believed they could "get out of it," and Gottlieb thought it would be tough.  Neither seemed to have a firm grasp on the concept, however.

Weber didn't have a clue, and it seemed super strange that Petro even asked him.  Just being a dick, IMO.

Petro is just mad that no one around KC cares about 'Cuse and that 'Cuse has become an after thought in college sports in general

What if we made it double hard and made everyone sign over a GOR AND an exit fee?  What then?

Texas Christian University coach Gary Patterson has been hired as Kansas State's 34th football coach, multiple sources have confirmed to GoPowercat.com.  Patterson replaces Ron Prince, who was fired Wednesday. - Tim Fitzgerald   Nov, 7, 2008

A guy who works here: http://www.athleticscholarships.net/ and proclaims himself to be "NCAA Expert for Athnet," has the following to say on GOR

Quote

Same with a GOR then. RT @bradwolverton: Perlman on ACC/other big exit fees: "I don't see how they're going to enforce that." #sbjiaf

A grant of rights has just as many problems as an exit fee because it will be tough to demand specific performance in that case.

I think the only benefit for the GOR is that the quantified dollar value of that GOR for each school would be a greater starting point than 50M.  So even if it is negotiated, you’re starting at a higher value and working down.  So if you started at $100M and worked down to 75M, does it make sense for KU to “spend” 75M (or even 50M) on getting out of a league that’s stable?  Will the "extra" revenue from the Big 10 really mean the operating profit increases or will the extra costs outweight that?

that's not true.  petro himself doesn't even follow syracuse that closely and if asked, wouldn't be able to name their basketball team's starting 5.

I could see were every year we are closer to the end of the current GOR, the less enforceable they become (buying your way out of them cost less)

He went to high school at SME, which is effectively KU.

I think they have the option to roll it after 7 years or something.

Pro Tip - the people  who decide whether or not GOR is enforceable are the same ones who have something to lose if they are enforceable.  it's the same crap w/ exit fees.

The Big 12 (*cough*texas*cough*ou*cough*) is the decider.  So they set the precedent with how it would be handled.  Same with the ACC.  There's probably like 4 teams there that are telling their Commish "ya know what, i mean, let's just negotiate with them, ya know?  I mean, just get some money from them but not 50M, okay?  Us?  Oh, yeah, umm, no we're not leaving.  'kay, bye".

I hate the idea of going back to 12 but FSU and Louisville would be great.

If the Big 10 offered, and KU wanted to join, could they even afford to fight the legal battle to leave?

Don't you dare suggest that they can.  I have learned that it is unwise to suggest that here.

I think any conference with a GOR is not going to want to go after any school in a conference with a GOR (sorry KU) because why help give other conferences a blue print to go after your schools.

4. Expansion isn’t done yet

More from the expansion front, where this fluid situation of conferences and potential superconferences isn’t slowing down.

Multiple sources say superconferences only happen if the Big Ten decides to move to 16 teams. The natural move for the Big Ten is further south, encroaching on the SEC footprint (Virginia, Georgia Tech).

Once the Big Ten goes to 16, it makes a statement to the rest of the major conferences that 16—and the television markets it brings—is where the landscape is headed. That forces the Big 12, which doesn’t want expansion, to expand with Florida State and Clemson.

That move leaves Duke and North Carolina—who one industry source said “will never leave the ACC” as long as it’s viable—in a tenuous spot. Do they stay with a crumbling ACC that looks more like the Big East, or do they go to the strongest conference in the game?

What prevents the Big Ten from grabbing Duke and UNC first? The reality that, more than anything, Duke and UNC want to be part of a viable ACC.
