How much more money do Big 10 teams make?
The paid out around $24 million last year (Nebraska got a little less due to the phased membership )

Big 12 was at around $20 but will be catching up due to Sugar bowl money.  Also, KU makes a pretty penny(more than $4 million IIRC) on tier 3 basketball that would go away if they go big 10.

If rumors are true -- and you can't discount anything anymore -- and big 10 adds Georgia Tech, I'd guess Boston College would be 16.

I hope it's BC.  I dislike them already, so it would be fun to have another reason to dislike them.

Makes sense compared to KU...boston is 7th nationally and would make them more of a real player in the Northeast...would also form a good rivaly w/ Rutgers

Good lord, that Rutgers v. BC rivalry would have me glued to the tv.

I would care even less than I care about NYY v Red Sox that ESPN tries to turn into Fraser v Ali every one of the 19 times they play every year...but NY/NJ vs BOS is a huge rivalry in every sport in which they play...Patriots/Giants-Jets, Knicks/Celtics, Hockey Team from NY/Hockey Team From BOS, etc......

Lots of ku fans are yanking their jerky to the thought of going to the Big 10.  Their arguments (in order I can think of them, not in order of strength):
1.  big 10 is satisfied with their football strength, want to build BB brand.  Elite ku brings that to them.
2.  Dominance of KC market, Moo and 'Cats have < 10% of market each
3.  Tejas and land thieves are going to Pac anyway
4.  Would allow ku to rub Moo's nose in failure to get into big 10, would send us to Mountain West
5.  Their med school and AAU status make them pick of the litter, ku would get a lot more research $$$ in big 10

Hmmm....a lot of bennies for ku to go to big 10, a distinct lack of TSC
As long as we are indulging in fantasy talk, here is my vision of a great future for KState with KU leaving the Big 12.

Texas pod - UT, TT, TCU, BU
Big 8 pod - OU, OSU, KSU, ISU
Southeast pod - FSU, UM, CU, GT or best NC/VA school available
ND pod - WVU, ND and whom ever they want (BC, Pitt, Navy, ect)

I mean, everybody is happy with their pod, Notre Dame gets to pick they best buds and the TV money would be tops.

It does - they don't have tier 3 in the Big 10.

I was laughing at the notion that KU will be rolling in the dough if they join the Big 10.

KU's tier 3 money goes away?  Right, possibly making the Big 10 move revenue neutral for KU depending on how the Big 10 network does in the fight to get on basic cable in the Northeast.

ACC Goes Boom!

30 Nov, 2012

Just a quick expansion update from the road and readers need to keep in mind there are many balls still in the air that could land in many different spots.

So don’t count your chickens before they hatch.

Don’t assume anything and more important.ly remember that this blog and any others you read for entertainment purposes only.

All indications are that UVA is still headed to the Big 10 along with Georgia Tech and the announcement could come as soon as next Monday.

UNC’s reaction would be to accept an invitation from the SEC and join Virginia Tech as Nick Saban’s stepstool.

The Big 12 is very close to an agreement with FSU and Miami that is contingent upon Georgia Tech leaving the ACC. The contingency isn’t formal it’s just that if Georgia Tech doesn’t leave neither are FSU and Miami.

Clemson and North Carolina State are have Big 12 invitations and will wait and see where the balls land and hope they land in the SEC. That’s not going to happen so pencil them both in for the Big 12.

Now here’s where it gets interesting. My friend over @blatanthomerism, thinks that the Big 12 would consider allowing Kansas to leave the Big 12 for the Big 10.

That only makes sense if the Big 12 adds one more, bringing the total to five, ACC schools and allows better east-west divisional alignment in the Big 12.  If the Big 12 were to go to 16 they could add BYU in the West  and someone like Louisville in the East.

That’s just a theory right now but one that I like.  Consider this:

West   East
Baylor
BYU
Oklahoma
Oklahoma State
TCU
Texas
Texas Tech
Kansas State or Kansas
Clemson
FSU
Iowa State
Louisville
Miami
NC State
Pitt
WVU
I’m not sure how likely a 16 member Big 12 is but I am sure that 12 could happen as soon as next week with 13 and 14 quickly thereafter.  The 16 member Big 12 could happen with Kansas too – just leave out Pitt and place KSU in the East and KU in the West.

if Kansas would leave the Big 12 it would be with the blessing of the Big 12 and a friendly separation that benefits both the Big 12 and Big 10.

Remember… no one at WVU has expressed anything about KU. That’s just me playing “what if”.

Before I go I want to address the situation with Clemson. Clemson has a Big 12 offer but is willing to wait and see if an SEC offer comes their way. It is very unlikely the SEC invites the Tigers simply because the SEC doesn’t want to duplicate markets and will certainly not duplicate a small market like the one Clemson offers.

Is Clemson deserving of an SEC invitation? Yes, and so is FSU but neither provide what the SEC needs right now offers – SEC expansion is about TV sets not the quality of football.  Clemson feels like they have an outside shot at the SEC and they are secure in taking that risk because they have an offer from the Big 12 in their pocket.

The Big 10 may not stop at 16. They could add UVA and GT and then add KU and BC.  They could lock down the northeast, have their presence in the south with Georgia Tech and be content in the knowledge the SEC and Big 12 have no desire to go beyond 16.

Right now its all fun to think about but just supposition. What I am fairly certain happens very soon is this:

UVA & GT to the Big 10
UNC & VPI to the SEC
FSU and Miami to the Big 12.
We can expect Clemson’s Board to decide to accept the Big 12 invitation shortly after FSU and Miami announce for the Big 12 and NC State will do the same hopefully after UNC moves on to the SEC.

But nothing happens this weekend. Enjoy college football and I would encourage all Mountaineer fans to turn up for senior day and see out Geno Smith, Tavon Austin and the rest of the senior Mountaineers as they play their last home game.

It won't happen, but that's a creative thought.

If it did happen like this (but it won't), there would be a significant amount of COLUSION between the Big 12, Big Ten, and SEC in terms of destroying the ACC.  You can actually work it out so that each of these conferences get a set of really good teams that fit their respective profiles.

Anyway, it's not going to happen whatsoever, but it's fun to speculate about.

who else is the big 10 going to get besides KU?  UVA? No.  UNC?  No.  Syracuse?  No.  Uconn?  No.  They have no other choices and they certainly aren't sticking at 15.

Boston College is 100X more attractive than KU -
bigger market
more prestigious academics
richer alums
arguably a better fb tradition
1000X more big ten alums in the Boston Market (not an exaggeration)
No GOR bshit
Doug Flutie
Clam Chowder
Will hunting
could keep going

So the people talking about Boston College in this thread as it relates to the Boston media market have obviously never been to Boston.  I'll put it like this, Boston College:Boston :: Newman College:Wichita NYC is a better college sports town than Boston is and that says something.  I still listen to Boston sports talk every day and that town couldn't be any less interested in the Eagles, the Crimson, the Terriers (sorry Limestone), the Huskies or anyone else.

hasn't the signing of Rutgers shown us that the big 10 can see past the "interest" of the school in the media and towards the way in which it can distribute itself in a highly populated area (i.e. the synergy or whatever with the YES network).  I'm sure that whatever local-ish sports tier for pro sports in boston will eventually have the BTN (if it doesn't already) and even if you only get 10% interest in the greater boston area, that's 10% of like 6M, which would be like every single person in KC having the BTN.

The Rutgers thing is completely different, & has been explained in this thread Newscorp who owns the Big 10 Network just bought the YES Network.  The Network is already in Boston.  Adding BC would add minimal interest to the network.  BC does not do numbers good enough in Boston to impress advertisers.  KU would absolutely be better for the Big 10 in that regard than BC.  I've lived in both places and KU does much better raw numbers in KC than BC does in Boston and it isn't even close.

I think it's pretty safe to say that far less than 10% of Boston cares about Rutgers.

Yeah, but I think it’s not only just the “interest” from that specific school in the population base, but also the alumni and “interest” from existing schools in that base.  So, big 10 grads in boston.  Sure, BC isn’t a draw, but what happens when Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State come in?  Does that drive the numbers higher and if so, then I assume they can charge rates (both the BTN rates and advertising on BTN) higher.
