Kinda shocking that Pete using phog talking points hooked so many posters

Pete learns.
"How will I recruit to Manhattan? Well, distance. And the proud state of basketball. It start there, and then daily flights to Dallas, because I'm really good at going out. Like top five good. Ask my wife. She wants me to be happy."

That public statement thing from UVA espousing their commitment to the ACC was strange.
What did UVA say?

Quote from: UVAAD

"During the past week there have been numerous reports and rumors linking the University of Virginia to interest in membership in other athletic conferences. Due to the recent changes that have taken place with conference realignment around the nation, I think it is important for us to put an end to this speculation as it relates to UVa.

"The University of Virginia is a proud member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Neither representatives of the athletics department, nor President Teresa Sullivan, has received invitations to nor sought membership in other conferences. The ACC's commitment to its members and their student-athletes is the finest in the country. We look forward to continuing this relationship far into the future. Our goal is to continue supporting the ACC and its initiatives for long-term success.

"I have expressed this stance to ACC Commissioner John Swofford, and I want to take this opportunity to express that same commitment to our alumni, fans, supporters, student-athletes and coaches. We firmly stand behind the Atlantic Coast Conference."

Also, I don't know how this affects UVA in this, but their Pres and Board of Visitors don't get along.  Over the summer the board forced her to resign, she resigned effective a later date, and within a week the uproar on campus was so large that the Governor said he would replace the entire board if they didn't work things out with the Pres.  It just gives me the feeling that it would make it alot harder for them to work together to OK a move.

So, I don't understand why those thinking that KU leaving would doom KSU to irelevance.

First off, KU ain't leaving, so this is all for nothing...BUT for the sake of adding a few hundred more pages to this monstrosity, lets say KU does go to the big 10.

KSU would then be the Big XII's sole anchor into three 'major' TV markets...KC (31) , Wichita (69) & Topeka (138). Now I know it seems silly to count Topeka and even Wichita as "major" markets, but when you add the three markets together, they would be the 16th largest market in # of TV Homes (1,564,840 based on '08 data) right ahead of Miami/Ft. lauderdale & right behind Minneapolis/St. Paul.

There is no way the Big XII would jeopardize losing the KC market, let alone the three markets combined so it would only strengthen KSU's position, but again, this is all pointless becaues KU isn't going anywhere.

I want to agree with you, but the Big 12 showed how much it cared about KC when it moved the HQ from its traditional home.

Moving the conference HQ lost how many TV Homes?  I mean, I see your point, and all, but that wasn't a decision that neglected TV Sets.

I don't think the Big 12 or the Big 10 give a eff about KC.  So, kinda a toss up on that one.

who else is the big 10 going to get besides KU?  UVA? No.  UNC?  No.  Syracuse?  No.  Uconn?  No.  They have no other choices and they certainly aren't sticking at 15.

I don't think TV homes are as big a deal to the Big 12 because we aren't trying to build a conference network. I think we are more concerned with national brands that will increase ratings for ESPN/ABC and Fox. So while splitting those markets with 2 other schools probably doesn't matter at all to the Big 10, who seems to only be concerned with the number of tv sets forced to subscribe to their network, that split does matter to the Big 12, who actually cares about the number of people watching them.

They did leave the basketball tournament in KC, despite not having a University in the state in which it is held...I'm not sure any conference has ever made a commitment like that to a city.

The Big 10 last couple selections were clearly about TV sets. Nebraska was arguably about "brand."

If rumors are true -- and you can't discount anything anymore -- and big 10 adds Georgia Tech, I'd guess Boston College would be 16.

I hope it's BC.  I dislike them already, so it would be fun to have another reason to dislike them.

Makes sense compared to KU...boston is 7th nationally and would make them more of a real player in the Northeast...would also form a good rivaly w/ Rutgers

If Georgia Tech and Maryland are leaving, we should go after the other ACC schools. Why not? If they all leave there is no way they are paying the buyout.

not really, ND is going to need a home for the non football sports. After football is killed off in the ACC and Big East, what will remain is two conference with no reason for the TV executives to give two rats about. The TV dollars will be next to nothing. ND will have to find a spot for those other sports, its that simple. That is when the big 10 comes in and tells ND that they can come in but only as a full member.

Tell me then, where the hell does ND play it's non-Football stuff?

When you say non-football, all you essentially mean is basketball.  And an ACC with UNC and Duke is legitimate; ND can park it’s basketball there and still get the same crappy games it got with the Big East in football.

The ACC won’t fall a part if Duke and UNC are there because they only care about basketball (and they appear to be okay with that).

And this year only furthers the idea that ND will remain independent.

Big 10 will hold at 15 until they are convinced Notre Dame will never join their conference.  If SEC goes to 16, that shows that ND has no choice but to join as a full member.  I think this is why Big 10 decided to expand again....trying to force ND to go all in.

I think the SEC and Big 10 see this too, which is why expansion is happening.  When the Playoff model starts, they won't want an independent playing for a spot when the four major conferences deserve to have at least 1 in.  I think they are trying to make it playoff system take major conference teams only, making it impossible for ND to get in.

This is a reasonable hypothesis.  Both the SEC and the Big 12 could end up doing most of Delaney's work for him.

On the Notre Dame thing, as long as the playoff provides "access" (albeit very difficult) to non-top tier conferences and "at large" teams, then it's likely Notre Dame has access.

Boston College is 100X more attractive than KU -
bigger market
more prestigious academics
richer alums
arguably a better fb tradition
1000X more big ten alums in the Boston Market (not an exaggeration)
No GOR bshit
Doug Flutie
Clam Chowder
Will hunting
could keep going
