"[BigXII] already has a 13-year year contract with ESPN and Fox paying the league more than $1 billion. That coincides with a grant-of-rights that basically keeps any of the teams from leaving. If Texas and/or Oklahoma split for, say, the Pac-12 then the Big 12 would keep its TV rights."

This seems to conclude the KU to the big 10 concern, no?

Is there really any concern about KU leaving?

If KU leaves then The Big 12 takes in all of the money from any games KU plays on TV for the next 13 years.
If they cut the conference a huge check to get out, then we cash the check and also split $1 billion 9 ways instead of 10.
I can even see the benifit of a nine team conference.
Every school gets 4 ooc games and adds 2 extra ooc games per year in BB. That's two extra home gates per year, 1 in football 1 in BB. Teams only need to win 2 conference games to go bowling each year. The entire league's overall record in every sport goes up. The Big 12 could be the first conference where every school goes to a bowl game every year.

So basically each school is looking at 20+3+4 for a total of $27M per year plus tier 3? That will mean we will be close to $30M, with other schools over 30. Anybody know where that will put our schools in the pecking order after major bowls/playoff/TV with other conferences?

9 team conference will veto the current Tier 1/2 contract.  We could pick up another 10th and still split KU's $$ 9 ways.

If I am reading the Dodd article right . . .

By 2014, each Big 12 school will be bringing in $34 (give or take) million a year, just off of Tier I/II/Bowls/Playoff.   Since Dennis only gave a breakdown in the purest of laymans terms, I'll assume that number includes NCAA payout and non BCS/Major bowls.

So $34 million a year, and that doesn't include Tier III.   So at the end of the day, by 2014 most Big 12 schools will either be pushing or surpassing the $40 million mark on total media/bowls/NCAA.   In the case of Texas, they'll be pushing the $45 to $50 million dollar mark.

Rusty, no one will care.  Seriously.  They don’t and won’t care.  The teams that won’t play each other will stay up there.  They won’t be penalized.  At all.  Here’s what’s going to happen.  I’m going to give you next year’s starting top 10 (in the coaches poll):

1 ND
2 Florida
3 Alabama
4 Oregon
5 Georgia
6 USC
7 A&M
8 Stanford
9 OU
10 LSU

Go look at A&M’ shedule next year.  I mean, they have Alabama at home early, then @ LSU at the end.  That’s it.  No Florida, Georgia or SC
Go look at Alabama’s schedule next year.  @ A&M in the beginning and LSU  at home towards the end.  That’s it.  No Florida, Georgia or SC

It will be harder and harder for people to NOT notice next year.

meh.  they won't be penalized for it.  not in the preseason polls, not in the harris poll.  people will notice, sure.  but they won't care. And as for the computers, because of the imbalance in the schedules, they espeically won't be penalized for it because they'll play (and beat) some rummy or multiple rummies in their league that will face those other teams, thus, everyone's SOS will be enhanced.

next year is the last year any of that will matter.  hopefully the Big 12 is well represented in the "selection committee" for the upcoming playoff.

or ... (i know this idea has been floated here) ... like the SEC set it up for multiple natty contenders.

  • add FSU or any other team as #11
  • play 8 game conference schedule
  • allows for multiple undefeateds/1-loss teams
  • multiple teams in BCS/Playoff

Another good one that builds on that...

So let's sum this up. We have increasing valuations despite slowing ad revenue and decreasing customer demand. New competition is quickly entering despite the fact that technological innovation is primed to transform the industry. And people in positions of very high power are making rash decisions based on information derived from past trends and not future outlooks. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Excellent. I liked this paragraph:

At the end of the day, the quality of a product is the only characteristic that will lead to consistent and stable sales. I am sure the inner-marketers in you will be sure to point out that there are three other P's in the marketing mix that I am neglecting. Promotion and placement will certainly bring attention, and price should be a factor, albeit it is not now, but the product itself is what will bring recurring consumers. And unfortunately for a lot of fans, the quality of the on-field content just got a lot worse.

i confused on who's in the Big East or ACC at this point.  :dunno:

i have a better idea about the ACC but none on the Big East

As it stands right now, in 2014 the Big East will have 12 FB playing schools.  Those 12 are made up of:

1 team who became D-1 in 2000
1 team kicked out in 2005 for being terrible, but taken back from the MAC in 2012
2 teams that were in CUSA in 2004
6 teams that played in CUSA this year
2 teams that played this year in the MWC

The Big East began playing as a football conference in 1991.  In 2014 there will not be a single team from that original 1991 season that has played continuously in the league since then.

Big East is no longer an automatic qualifier for the New Access Bowls.

It's reported that they've been grouped with the MWC, CUSA, Sun Belt and MAC as the Gang of 5 and the best team from this Group will have an automatic spot.

The Conference just lost all football relevance.  Hence, any school with any hope for football legitimacy has jumped ship.

Don't pretty much all bowl money (not counting champions bowl) get spent by the team attending?

Regardless, how will we sit against the Big 10 (obviously some speculation to what they will make at that time)?

We'll make way more in the next two years.  But we'll have to see how the Big Ten's TV stuff works out in 2016 when they take all of their Tier 1 content to market.

I wouldn't really enjoy losing KU. Don't you guys like kicking the crap out of them every year? But, I guess if at the same time we are able to bring more money in it wouldn't be that bad.

There is no way on God's green earth KU is leaving the Big 12.

That said, it would be pretty cool to replace them with FSU, the U and Clemson.

It would kinda suck for us and ISU to get stuck in a east division but a lot of Uncle Fox's money would help us get over it.

How much has the BIG really increased their Tier 1 value?  We saw what ESPN and Fox thought about Nebraska's value to the Big 12's tier 1 and it wasn't enough to change the numbers.

I would hate to see KU go, as much as I dislike those pretentious Jayhawks.

With the exception of possibly A&M, I think the turncoat schools that left the Big 12 are or will soon be missing it terribly.

I have seen Nebraska fans bemoaning the loss of a serious rival (and having to watch those boring games!) And surely Mizzou fans will be at the same point soon. CU fans may be too high to notice the changes to their football program.

How much has the BIG really increased their Tier 1 value?  We saw what ESPN and Fox thought about Nebraska's value to the Big 12's tier 1 and it wasn't enough to change the numbers.

With Maryland and Rutgers?  They haven't at all.  They hurt per team payout of T1 dollars in exchange for what they hope is a significant increase in T2/3 dollars by getting the BTN on basic cable in Maryland and New Jersey.

They're also counting on a bidding war for their T1 rights in 2016.  They'll most likely let that contract expire and wait out any sort of exclusive negotiation window with ESPN and take those rights to market.  They may ultimately stick with ABC/ESPN, but they'll make them pay for it after NBC and Fox bid for it.

Exactly.

Meanwhile, Kansas State will have been on over-the-air broadcast national television 6 times this year after the Texas game. 4 more games were nationally televised on ESPN or FX. That is ridiculously awesome exposure. We are building a national brand while Nebraska is stuck with the task of helping to build a cable network.

Fan question from Kevin Luchansky (@kpLUCH on Twitter): With realignment shaking up again, does the Pac-12 stay put or look to expand?

SCOTT: We’re not looking to expand. We intend to and hope to stay at 12 teams for the foreseeable future. I feel we’ve been at the forefront of expansion, at least the recent wave of it. Obviously realignment has been happening for decades but in the recent wave we were a very early mover. In 2011, we added Colorado and Utah and it was very strategic to get to a football championship game and in advance of our TV negotiations and in advance of possibly starting our own network. It turned out well.

We did have the opportunity last fall to evaluate further expansion opportunities. At that time it was clear to me and I told our athletic directors and presidents: We have to envision a world where peer conferences go to 14 or 16 teams. We saw that with the SEC adding Texas A&M and Missouri, the ACC was at 14. I had enough conversations with the Big Ten to know that they would at some stage likely expand. We evaluated not in the context of where the world was today but where the world is going to be five or 10 years ago and that’s a world of 14 or 16-team conferences. We decided we wanted to stay at 12.

Especially after what the Big Ten has just done, our conference makes more sense than any other from a geographic standpoint. We have the logic of natural rivals in each of the markets we’re in. We like playing each other; our schools don’t want to play each other less. The departure from the round-robin and not playing each other has required some adjustments but our priority is keeping the nine-game schedule and playing each other often.

Frankly, you can never be complacent but there’s a sense that we’re right there with any conference in the country in terms of the caliber of our TV deal both financially and exposure-wise. We’ve kind of ticked the box in terms of things we wanted to achieve so there’s no sense that we need to expand for expansion’s sake. We’re in great shape as a 12-team conference.

Utah and Colorado haven't added anything good to the PAC-12. They obviously know that.

They allowed them to have a championship game, and they provide tv markets for their network.
