It's just brutal to see so many of the huge egos in college basketball getting humiliated. Feel really bad for KU.

Quote
The assumption has long been that if the Big East's Catholic schools -- Marquette, DePaul, Providence, St. John's, Villanova, Seton Hall, Georgetown -- broke away, they'd raid the A-10 and form a Northeastern hoops super-conference.
That plan always included schools like Xavier, Dayton, Creighton, Siena and Butler. But what's always kept this idea from gaining any momentum is that college basketball television ratings resemble those of late-night infomercials. The biggest regular season games can't touch the Liberty Bowl in ratings.

Excellent column from Wetzel: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/ncaaf--big-ten-jim-delany-quality-for-cash-with-expansion-move-192826899.html

And also from Clay Travis: http://outkickthecoverage.com/the-sec-and-big-ten-will-have-16-members.php

Quote
the SEC will never, ever add Florida State, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Louisville or Miami to its conference....
This is the future, it's inevitable.

first ask Notre Dame if they want in on this then add whichever Tobacco Road school is left and we can finally put the Big 16 copyright to work

As long as the BigTen doesn't take GaTech to get to 16, it sets up perfectly for us to go to 16 with 4 pods.  Texas, Kansas-Oklahoma, South, and East.  But thats pie-in-the-sky, a long way down the road daydreaming.

Correct at pie in the sky, but the BIG did just start with Maryland and Rutgers - I mean, Maryland and Rutgers

He had me until the "Big 12 total failure" part.

It wasn't the conf's fault that Nebraska was 1-9 against Texas.  Did the rest of us bail on Nebraska when they racked up 70-20-ish all-time records on us, KU, ISU and almost everyone else in the Big 8?  No.  But as soon as they lose 9 games to Texas it's eff the world we're out of here.

Not the conf's fault Mizzou and Colorado always wanted to go to the Big 10 and Pac-10, for decades.  The Big 12 inherited that crap.

And the Big 12 by today's definition isn't/wasn't a superconference.  The old 16 team WAC was the superconference.  These 14 team SEC and Big 10s are superconferences.  We were a two division 12 team conference.  Now we're a 10 team round robin conference.

And we're doing pretty good now that we have real leadership.   :gocho:

In other words, as a profit-making mechanism, this is essentially a scam. It relies on an opaque pricing mechanism (bundled cable television) forcing people to pay for a product they don’t want. Right now, it’s a highly lucrative scam. But bundled cable television pricing is not going to last forever, and possibly not very long at all. There is already a revolution in video content under way that is going to render the cable television bundle model obsolete. When that revolution has finished, the Big Ten will realize it pulled apart its entire identity to grab a profit stream that has disappeared.

This was the key paragraph and why the Big 12 doesn't want to expand. We don't have the network to run the scam that the big 10 is running (and the SEC soon.) When bundled cable packages die they will be left with a bunch of crappy games while the Big 12 will continue to have multiple marquee matchups every single week.

The points about tradition don't carry much outside the Big 10, IMO.

However, the points about the future of revenue in a digital market are interesting.

Earlier in this thread were some long winded posts from an FSU board from a supposed media analyst...they were very similar to this.

He even went so far as saying that broadband distribution would be such a powerful disruptive force to cable, that teams who could sell their own tier 3 could make huge money relative to the super conference teams who pool it with everyone else in the super conference (i.e. Texas)

Good read.

I don't know, anytime someone uses brand dilution as a talking point regarding Big Ten football that immediately raises a near irrebuttable presumption they're a total dumb ass.  The Big Ten has been loaded with crap teams for a very long time, adding two more isn't hurting Ohio State and Michigan any.  Nobody respects Big Ten football on the field anyway.
My prescience is fully engorged.  It throbs with righteous accuracy.  I am sated.

So do I have this right:  the battle to expand is driven by inventory and demographics– getting to 16 provides more inventory for both a conference and national network and at the same time broadens the potential customers for both to view this inventory.

The counter is that this delivery method won’t exist in the future (how long into the future?).  We’ll get our “TV” through the “internet connection” and therefore be able to select only those channels we really want at a certain price per channel, rather than having to “pay” for Lifetime because we really wanted ESPN News.

I guess what I don’t understand is that it simply comes down to a matter or price and if you’re in large markets, the probability (even if you’re paying a la carte) increases with the population (and the demographics of that population).  So, while “no one cares about college football in new york” might be true, even if 10% only “care” in NYC, then they still get 820K viewers….which is double what KC would be if everyone (100%) cared enough to pay.  I don’t see how the big 10’s model is wrong either way.  Maybe the big 10 doesn’t make as much as it does now, but relatively speaking compared to other conferences (which you would assume would have a similar “deflation” in viewers) they will still lead.

Good read.

Wrong. It's mostly stupid article that misses the whole motivation as to why Univ. Presidents - especially those of public schools - are willing to move forward with these decisions. Their hand is being forced.

As I said last year:
Quote
2.) The future of higher educations has DRASTICALLY changed in the last 5-10 years. What IS the future environment for many higher education institutions? Decreasing contributions from their respective states - at an accelerating rate. More pressure to lower tuition. Decreasing contributions from Fed gov. research funding. Our Govt's, Fed and state, are all broke. Why do you think UT is holding on the LHN like it has been? Financial support from the academic side for athletic activities is no longer feasible. Self-sustaining athletic programs and even profitable programs giving back to the academic side is how many of these UPs envision supporting their schools' academic mission...
