Florida State that much more valuable than Clemson?

yes.   both in fanbase and prestige.

TV's

fanbase = tvs.    sure there are some people who watch games that aren't fans, but the majority are fans.

I asked exit fee questions when this measure was passed by the ACC. And so did Florida State. Namely, how enforceable was the exit fee? Remember when everyone said Nebraska, Colorado, Texas A&M, and Missouri would all have huge exit fees to pay? None of those schools paid more than $12.4 million.

Why?

Because as OKTC told you, the bylaws weren't as clear as the Big 12 thought.
My interpretation is the conferences only have the leverage of 1 year's TV and Bowl revenue.  The only time a team has paid more IIRC is when they are moving up to a significantly better conference (like WVU to the B12) and the new conference money makes it affordable to just pay more than they really have to.   Nobody wants a lawsuit in these deals.  I will be surprised if Maryland pays more than $15 million.

Supposedly, neither FSU or Maryland did.  That said, they are part of a group who is held to the decisions voted on by the group.

i guess not.  either way it doesn't matter.  no one is going to have to pay $50MM to get out.

Maryland is another ACC school that has felt disenfranchised by the Tobacco Road Mafia, they and FSU were the two schools who voted AGAINST increasing the buyout.

Clumpson probably doesn't want to go anywhere because I am sure that they feel like they can win a lot more in the ACC.   FSU might feel the same way, but they have got to be looking at the financial numbers and figuring they can do a lot better financially somewhere else.   The issue is, is that somewhere else the SEC, and will the SEC want that Gulf Coast corridor jammed with so many schools recruiting all over each other.

The ACC did kind-of sort-of add Notre Dame recently, so I can see why their "collapse" may not be as sudden, but I still think Big XII needs to get to at least 12 teams. Kind of okay w/ 14 teams, and right now not feeling 16 teams. But then again this all comes down to $$$$

I thought Florida, Georgia, and SC didn't want their in-state rivals in the SEC because they felt that gave them an advantage for recruiting.

The option is still there for us to go to 11 teams like the Big Ten did for around twenty years.

Get FSU, protect two games for each school like the Big Ten did, and hang out and see what happens.

OU plays TX and OSU every year and rotates the rest...Think big 10 when Iowa could win the conference title without playing tOSU.

You lock-in two other schools that you play every year.  They never rotate out in the scheduling rotation for football.

I would like this option but only if I had any confidence that our conference and our conference commissioner had any idea how to market/sell/brand our conference correctly.  They don’t and never have.

Bowlsby was a big part of the BTN and Pac-12 expansion.  He understands what's going on.  At least, I think he does.

I think the problem is that the pool of legitimate candidates is small, and the ones we really want are only warming up to the idea of moving.  However, Maryland's departure probably turns the heat up a little bit.

I still feel really confident FSU is coming.  There was a lot of fan inertia last year moving them in this direction, and the BOT was starting to lean towards supporting the move.  The problem was you had a President who was hell bent on staying right where he was and a ton of uncertainty out there with the playoff.  Now that there's more clarity there, and the fact that one-loss FSU is an afterthought in the championship discussions (behind us no less) and Clemson isn't even in the discussion, you have to think that they'll be more receptive this time.

It doesn’t matter the members – the big 12 leadership will continue its “individuals first, conference second” approach.

I think all of the members understand the benefit of Florida State.  I just think as things were progressing last year, the playoff hit, Notre Dame hit, and Swofford circled the wagons in time to shut it down, temporarily.

Hatter has a point on GPC, This may be a powerplay to force Notre Damn to the Big 10. If the ACC falls apart they will have only two choices, Big 12 or Big 10 and sorry but they fit in the Big 10 and always has.  We just need to make sure we get the good schools before the SEC comes in and starts picking at the carcase.

Some WVU guy (not the dude) keeps saying that the big 10 is taking 4 from south of the mason dixon. When asked if it was UVA, UNC, Maryland and GaTech he said the guy was 75% correct.

eff.  Florida State.

"think with your brain and not your jockstrap" was his response to me when I brought up FSU/Miami

Please post any more updates from this guy.  TIA.

Also, personal anecdote:  Went to a symposium on college athletics ("Is Anyone In Charge?") last Wednesday that featured a bunch of folks including the Rutgers AD and ESPN heavy hitters, and this was never hinted at.  I mean, it's not surprising that it wasn't mentioned, but the general theme of the Rutgers AD's comments seemed to be that his school was being left behind in realignment.  Good poker player.

Maryland guy on regional syndicated sports talk.

Maryland athletics in "severe debt" . . . because of renovation of Byrd Stadium  :ohno: . . . but unlike K-State they've only sold 1/3rd of their luxury boxes.   Debbie Yow (now NC State's AD) went ahead with all the stuff before they had the money and before they had the suites sold.   Said the move is (obviously) entirely about money, and that multiple Regents, including a former B-ball player who sits on the Regents voted against the move.

Expanded on Maryland always feeling like they never have really been, nor never would be a power broker in the ACC . . . so why not go for the money.
