Notre Dame in the Big 12?

Don't shrug it off too quickly. It's been assumed the conference has looked into adding the Irish. Now there's proof.

In a January memo to the Big 12 expansion committee, interim commissioner Chuck Neinas said Notre Dame is the only school the Big 12 could add that would “enhance the Big 12 value for television.”

The memo, obtained by The Oklahoman through an Open Records request, was sent to the committee as an agenda for a late January teleconference.

The expansion committee is made up of Oklahoma State president Burns Hargis, Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione, Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds and Kansas State president Kirk Shulz.

Here is a look at other items on the agenda and Neinas' responses:

If Notre Dame would become a partial member, how would that impact the current membership and what does it do to further expansion?

Neinas' response: “Both representatives of ESPN/ABC and Fox Sports indicated that Notre Dame's involvement with the Big 12 Conference would increase the value of the conference relative to future television and also improve the image of the conference nationwide.”

What value would a new member bring to the conference?

Neinas' response: “Our television partners agreed that the only new member that would enhance the Big 12 value for television was Notre Dame.”

What adjustments would be required to accommodate a new member?

Neinas' response: “Eleven members would require either an 8-game or 10-game schedule for football and there would have to be some type of an adjustment to accommodate basketball for both men and women.”

Would expansion lead to more long-term stability for the Big 12 Conference?

Neinas' response: “There is some sentiment that an increase in membership would enhance stability. It could be argued that the Grant of Rights agreement signed by the members is the most important instrument to assure conference stability.”

Neinas goes on in the memo to say he discussed expansion with ESPN president John Skipper, Fox Sports president Randy Freer and ESPN's head of college athletics operations Burke Magnus.

Neinas said all three agreed a 10-member conference was preferred, but they would live with expansion to 11 or 12 teams. He also said both TV partners were in support of Notre Dame becoming a partial member of the Big 12 if the Irish would play a specific number of football games at Big 12 venues.

Nenias referenced a December meeting of athletic directors who were spit on the idea of expansion. He wrote that if the conference were to expand, there was strong support for the University of Louisville to become the Big 12's 11th member.

missed this earlier, but this was before anyone in the world thought FSU was a serious expansion candidate. Only a moron would think ND would be the only school that would add value, but in December only a moron would think FSU was a remote possibility for Big 12 expansion.

Agreed, but it's nice to have some piece of concrete evidence that they were talking with someone about this stuff.

i don't follow this stuff other than to make fun of the people that do but are you saying that FSU can bring in their $25M (assuming that's what each school is going to make [assuming that b/c i don't know what the real number is]) + incremental multi-millions for the other 10 teams in the conference?  essentially they would be bringing in their $25m + let's say $3m for each of the b12 teams, for a total of $58m annually?

seems like a lot but imo, only an imo michigan, not saying you're wrong buddy. go cats.

Yeah how could anyone have thought any ACC or Big East members would be looking to jump.  Morons, all of them.

I've crunched the numbers and the answer is yes.

I don't think anyone expected the ACC teams to jump at that time, considering they'd just added Pitt and Syracuse 3 months earlier. And none of the remaining Big East teams would add significant value.

nobody thought any ACC programs could conceivably jump to the Big 12 at that point.  it wasn't until their shitty tv contract numbers were announced that they got the itch.

I've got to admit that I am shocked they are going to a four team playoff with a selection committee picking the best four teams.

Conference championship games are now a detriment.  No way we go above 10 teams in the Big XII.  The ACC, BigEast, and all the other shitty conferences as well as Notre Dame have a better chance than ever.  Go undefeated and you'll probably get in.

Boise State seems to do it regularly.  And they will be in the Big East.  Virginia Tech is in the shitty ACC.

Does that mean those two teams are college football powerhouses?  Should they be in the four team playoff?

No.

Just wait and see what happens to TCU and West Virginia.

It also gives the Houstons and Southern Miss's of the world some motivation to schedule multiple good BCS programs.  If you think you are legit then schedule three big names in the non-con and you will get in if you go undefeated.  They now have to realize that if that is their aspiration (I know it isn't for most) then their non-con is essentially their conference play.

Except no good BCS program would want to play them.  Pickle/Conundrum right there.

Who would play them?  How would that be good for a school like us?  Or for a Texas or Alabama?

We are going to have to go undefeated to get into the playoff.  It doesn't matter if we we beat Houston or Sam Houston in the OOC.

every BCS team in the country will take them to fill a non-con home game slot.  at the end of the season there will be a lot of BCS 1 and 2 loss teams that are fighting for those 3 and 4 spots that will need a decent non-con win.  And we would not need to go undefeated every year.  we would have been in in 1998 and last year had we beaten OSU (and possibly 2002 with 2 losses).

Since 1996, Boise State has 2 undefeated seasons.'06 and '09 and won a BCS bowl both of those years.

Since 1996 Virginia Tech has 0 undefeated seasons.

Alabama has 1, USC has 1, Ohio State has 1, Michigan has had 1, Florida has had 0

I mean, you act like undefeated seasons just happen every year for multiple teams.

Perhaps you don't understand what a "selection committee" does?
