If it's all gonna end with Texas going independent anyways, we might as well make as much money as possible until then.

Yes.  10 is stupid.  Very very stupid.  Ok financially, but stupid.  I don't buy Neinas' crap about building the relationship of the 10.

I'm hoping he is playing conservative and waiting for BCS before striking.

It's pretty simple to me.

If you go with the right mix of 12 or 14, and you can put mechanisms in place that make it very desirable for them to stay and prosper.

Personally, I think one of the guys on ShaggyBevo kind of made the best point.  If you add the right schools for 12 or 14, and you give this conference some real sex appeal, it entices Texas and Oklahoma to stick around.

Ladies!  Get a grip!  The game is over and we won.  We have a seat at the big boy table.  The ACC is not going to be pulling sexy out of thin air.

Our ticket is punched.  We're on top of the world.  All we can see are unicorns and rainbows everywhere we turn...and you dumbasses want to wreck it by bringing in a bunch of loser schools?

Just shut up and act like you've been here. This is heaven.  Quit trying to eff it up.

Unless of course FSU and Clemson and VT decide to all have simultaneous upswings while OU and UT (and the rest of the league) have a downturn and the two conferences will have swapped positions.

We are locked at the hip with the SEC in a new bowl that we jointly own with them.  It doesn't matter how good FSU, Clemson or VT are, they aren't going to be playing in our bowl game. We won. It's over.

because if we don't, someone else does.  a year ago we thought we would be in the Mtn West.  remember what that felt like?  it felt awful.  if we sit on 10 eventually someone forms a stronger league by taking one or both of our remaining teams that are worth a damn.  or TX goes solo.  if we add a couple more teams that are worth a damn and get a monster long term tv deal with a huge rough ridin' grant of rights we are much more secure than if we sit at 10.

that's Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!).  the league isn't more secure with more teams.  if texas leaves, the whole thing crumbles irregardless of who else is there.  ou and fsu aren't going to sit in the texasless big 12 thinking "welp, sucks that the league sucks now, but we're here now - no choice but to just play kstate and isu until the end of time."

The SEC can provide shelter for only so many wanderers before the cracks widen. Fourteen is unwieldy. It's not a conference in the purest sense. It's an association.

Sixteen would become a game-changer. Sixteen would make the SEC essentially two different conferences.

"I'm struggling to make 14 work," SEC Commissioner Mike Slive said, drawing laughs. He wasn't joking. The commish who once said he could get to 16 teams in 15 minutes is bogged down in the muck that comes with the post-expansion euphoria.

It all may work out just fine for the SEC - the TV money, the schedules, the playoff format, the rivalries. But right now, it's muck.

staying at 10 and the benefits (round robin, texas recruiting, established rivalries) would be nice and if the Big12 could make it happen i would mosdef take.

i'm just not buying the line they are putting out.  they did tip their hand when they hinted to a change of heart when it's decided how a playoff will be executed.

Yeah, everyone keeps pointing at the date the new commisioner takes over as the date stuff will happen if it is going to happen.  You have to think that they aren't going to move until they know what the playoff format will be.

Big East TV deal might be small
Tampa Bay Times In Print: Thursday, May 31, 2012

The "most conservative estimate" for a new Big East TV deal is $6.4 million per school annually, San Diego State president Elliot Hirschman said Wednesday.

The Aztecs get only $1.2 million this year, its last in the Mountain West before becoming a football-only member of the Big East. But last year, the Big East turned down ESPN's offer of $1.17 billion over nine years — or $13.8 million per school annually.

Since then, West Virginia and TCU left for the Big 12 and Syracuse and Pittsburgh announced they will leave for the ACC. In 2013, the league also adds Boise State from the Mountain West as a football-only member and Central Florida, Houston, Memphis and SMU from Conference USA as all-sports members. (Navy, an independent, joins for football in 2015).

C-USA's current deal nets each school about $1.3 million.

Last week, CBSSports.com reported the league could earn as little as $4 million for each of the 10 full members, including USF, $3 million for each football-only member and $1 million for each non-football member.

Under the current deal with ESPN, the Big East's eight full members get about $3.125 million annually while the eight non-football schools get about $1.5 million.

ESPN's exclusive negotiation rights begin Sept. 1 and last for 60 days. If no deal is reached, CBSSports.com reported the conference likely would talk to NBC/Comcast and Fox.

No, they will be playing the SEC champ in the national championship instead.

Honest question for the board:  Why do we want to expand?  12, 14, 16, whatever.  Why do we want it?

If we expand and form divisions, K-State will get stuck in a division where our drivable road trips are Ames and Lawrence, plus some flights to WVU, Clemson or FSU.  We'll get stuck in a division with no Texas teams, dramatically reducing our ability to recruit in Texas.  We'll be stuck with teams that we have absolutely nothing in common with.  What's in it for us, other than some extra dollars?

You act as if the other division wouldn't have 4 teams from Texas. We would still play in Texas every year, regardless of the divisional layout. We would also swap Colorado, Nebraska, and Missouri for Florida State, West Virginia, and Clemson. I like it when the cats play on national television, and that sounds a whole lot better than the old Big 12 North.

FBS (aka D1) should be doing this....and should be doing THREE versions of it, the main championship, the NIT, and the Cb-whatever third level.  Get 72 teams playing the post season.  The lower levels would obviously use primarily home sites...

Quote
FCS looks to expand tournament

Expansion would see 24 teams make tourney by 2013 season

It has taken college football’s elite more than 100 years to be dragged toward a playoff system that will likely still only have a handful of teams.

Smaller schools have been doing the playoffs for a long time — and they’re about to make them bigger.

The Football Championship Subdivision is on the verge of expanding its playoff system from 20 to 24 teams by 2013. The proposal would give an automatic bid to all FCS leagues that want one, seeds the top eight teams and gives them first-round byes and home games in the following round.

http://www.ncaa.com/news/football/article/2012-05-10/fcs-looks-expand-tournament

AND you'd only have to decrease the regular season by 1 game, back down to 11 games, which we were all happy with for years and years.....

For example, this year's FCS winner, NDSU, played 11 regular season games between September 3rd and November 19th.

Then, they get a bye in the first round of the playoffs, and play 4 more games between December 3rd and January 7th

By way of comparison, there are 340+ D1 basketball teams in the NCAA.  68 teams make the NCAA tournament, 32 teams in the NIT, and 16 teams in the CBI.

If I was the D1 football Jesus, I would enact my plan for three levels of 24 team playoffs, and you all would be deliriously happy and love me.

Pan....the eff is this crap?

The new Big 12 TV deal is expected to be announced any day, perhaps here this week as a celebration of the league's new-found strength. Within that deal is a clause that will give any new expansion candidates the same money as the current members (estimated to be at least $20 million per year).

One industry source said that number applies whether the Big 12 invites, "Appalachian State or Florida State." And according to another industry source, ESPN wouldn't stand in the way of Big 12 expansion even after negotiating a new deal with the ACC.

Dodds just confirmed that the Big 12 cannot afford to sit on its ass if there are good targets out there.

Doesn't it also mean that for the next 13 years (until the expiration of this next contract) that we don't even have to consider whether a target is "good?"

I mean, eff it....let's really add Tulane then.  Might as well grab UNLV as well.  If we're going to do this, let's rough ridin' party.

Denis Dodd must be getting this wrong...that can't rough ridin' be the case.

I mean, I'm sure that they'd want to lock in "good" programs as an investment in that future deal 13 years from now (in theory we'll get a better deal then, if we have non-poop teams)...but eff, how does ESPN/FOX say "Ya, we'll pay the same for Tulane as we will for FSU games?"

Wasn't that the point of adding an FSU or Clemson?  To add more $$ to the pot per team plus a conference championship?  If adding FSU and Clemson gain us nothing for 13 years, why do it?  Doesn't benefit FSU much unless they get a stellar Tier 3.
