Why do people have an prodigious opinion about Ames and Manhattan, two of the better college towns in the big 12.

Ranking

Tier 2
OU, KSU, ISU, TCU
Tier 3
OSU, KU <<< both are to spread out.
Tier 4

Its the same type of people who overly romanticize everything.   Starkville, MS is awesome, South Carolina's stadium isn't in the middle of an industrial park, Gainesville, FL isn't surrounded by hardcore redneck communities, Blacksburg, VA is easily accessible etc. etc. etc.

I would swap OSU and OU, but I agree with that otherwise.

Adding Mizzou & A&M was always about an SEC network, not rights fees increases from CBS & ESPN.

Agreed

SD, if ESPN is partners with SEC on SEC network, does that scare you with the ESPN/TX partnership?

I was told today that Notre Dame has agreed to join the Big 12...Florida State, Clemson and GA Tech would also join the Big 12.

SEC would then take NC State and VA Tech.

Remaining ACC Schools would merge with Big East.

The Big 12 story over the past 3 summers will be the best 30 for 30 of all time if this guy is correct.

I would buy the collectors edition.

No SD (obviously), but what I hear is that we'd have a Texas Network, a ND network, and two regional networks to create a larger network.

If this happens, my guess is that we'll do something in this regard if the other big three are, too.

No way OU and FSU dump their 3rd tier content onto Fox Sports WGAF while SEC teams are nationally broadcasting softball.

Big 12 - Don't Mess With Texas
May 21, 2012 -- 11:08am

By Kevin Kietzman

While everyone around the college football universe is still trying to figure out how they so badly misgauged the supposedly crumbling Big 12 Conference, the league has emerged as at least the second most powerful in the country.  How did so many smart people get it so wrong?  For starters, they never once put themselves in Texas' shoes.

As I've now been saying for three years, Texas has no option better than the Big 12.  And it's not even close.  Other leagues share all the television rights, this league allows Texas to keep its Longhorn Network money.  It's now open season for Florida State, Notre Dame and any other giant power to join in the riches.  Interestingly, while the rules have benefitted Texas, they have actually improved for all the smaller schools, too.  Because Texas is making so much off their own network, they've had no problem now sharing the Tier 1 and Tier 2 rights equally with all the other schools.  That's far better than the original rules Nebraska and Texas drummed up in 1996 that paid more money for more tv appearances, a stacked deck for sure.

Texas was NEVER going to the Pac 12 without the Longhorn Network.  Or the SEC.  Or the NFL for that matter, although the Big 12 rules are pretty much the same as the NFL's revenue sharing plan.  Ah, the NFL.  What a horrible business model those idiots in the Big 12 have chosen to follow.  When we play each other on network tv, we all share the pool.  Wanna keep your local radio and preseason TV money for yourself?  Ok, no worries.  Sure the Giants and Cowboys make more than the Chiefs and Colts, but it's the big, shared pool that matters most.  It's huge money, yes, but it's also the right thing to do.  It was actually more contentious before when Texas would get picked to be on television by a network and cash a huge check in a meaningless game against a winless Baylor team,  while K-State was playing for a division title on the radio and getting no money.

Who got it right and who got it wrong?  Well, you have to give Nebraska credit, they got out because Texas got too big.  And the Huskers got scared.  After decades of feeling like all of college football was centered around Lincoln, Nebraska, they've found a comfy little home in the Big Ten away from the population and economic explosion in America's Sun Belt.  Nebraska couldn't compete with Texas' growth in population and revenue and they couldn't accept being part of the "underclass" of the Big 12.

Colorado's in a better place where competition isn't so tough and the free spirits of the Pac 12 can go on float trips and bond.

Texas A&M is bitter and filled with Texas envy and will be unable to compete long term (or short term for that matter) in the SEC West.

Missouri was led initially by lust but in the end was truly following survival instincts in leaving for the SEC.  What irony that they left and they're now in a 14 team league trying to get to the same game, the new Champions Bowl between the SEC and Big 12,  that they would have been playing for without a move.  But Mizzou was convinced the Big 12 wouldn't survive.  They were wrong.  Big deal, so was everyone that didn't analyze Texas' position.  Maybe nobody paid attention in Economics class or maybe nobody that reports on or runs college athletics knows anything about private markets and free enterprise.  Capitalism is amazing but also very predictable.  People like money a lot.  Going forward in all this ask but two questions about any school and where they want to go.  1) Do you want a shot at playing for college football's biggest championship?  2)Where can you make the most money?

Any school that makes decisions based on emotion and not on one of those two criteria will be making a mistake.  The Big 12 is open for business and anyone that wants to play for all the marbles while amassing spectacular profits, catch a flight to Dallas and talk to Bob Bowlsby.  He's the most powerful person in college football at this moment.  Just like the state of Texas will soon have the largest population and biggest economy of any state in America, the Big 12 is positioned to become the most influential and powerful football conference of all time.

More smart people should have seen this coming.

Something interesting about the Big 12 and SEC that I just looked up...

So, let's say the Big 12 adds FSU, Clemson, GT, and Notre Dame.  If you take the 2012 US News and World Report rankings, the average ranking of schools in the conferences would be...

Big 12: 96
SEC: 96

Both conferences, 14 members apiece, would have 4 AAU schools.

Honestly, we would be mirror images of each other.  Almost exactly in every single way.

I'd wager that their states have lower literacy, higher teenage pregnancy rates, and higher rates of poverty than ours.  However, West Virginia likely does not help our cause.

West Virginia hurts us, no doubt, but they still have Mississippi representing 1/7 of the schools in their conference.

The two worst schools in the Big 12 are Texas Tech (160) and WVU (164).  Mississippi and Mississippi State clock in at 143 and 157, respectfully.

For those scoring at home, Kansas State checks in at 143.  And, mainly, we're screwed by our 98% acceptance rate.

No, but it kind of underscores why the partnership makes sense on a lot of different levels.

Honestly, outside of a few key games, if the Big 12 and SEC were to play one OOC game, cross-conference, every year, and they played 9 game conference schedules, what percentage of games, nationally, would be nearly as relevant?  20%?  Maybe?

I mean, my God, it would be insane.
