Ultimately there just isn't enough money to go around in the ACC.  I also think FSU has a minor case of in-state butthurt the way ATM had towards Texas.  They simply have to get as close as even to them as they can or they will just die.  Of course ATM's butthurt was an 11 on a 10 point dial, and they were in the same conference, but I think FSU feels they need to take the next step.

Actually, the Big 12 is anywhere from 1-3, depending on how much your school's tier 3 content is worth.

The problem is that FSU has had recent success.  Unlike aTm...who derive their sense of self from God knows where.  Its also pretty widely recognized that UF did everything possible under the sun to catch up to FSU.   I will grant that UF did surpass FSU in basketball.  But the reality is that basketball at FSU was the 3rd place sport behind baseball.

I wonder what else started happening in the last ten years that may have helped that gap widen?

My guess is that there is a strong correlation between the revenue/profit gap and the performance gap.  I could be wrong, but I'm betting it's pretty close.

Zook was HC at Florida from 2002 to 2004.  I would argue Florida State was the better program most of the time from 1987 to 2000 when they finished in the top 5 every single year.  Especially when they played for the NC in 1998, won it in 1999, and played in it again in 2000.  Was Florida finishing top 5 all 14 of these years?
