FSU & Clemson to the B12? This guy thinks otherwise...

Forget Rumors – Reasons Why FSU Would Never Join the Big 12

http://dev.chuckoliver.net/2012/05/forget-rumors-reasons-why-fsu-would-never-join-the-big-12/

Quote
NO UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT OR BOARD OF TRUSTEES WILL EVER LEAVE AN ASSOCIATION WITH SCHOOLS LIKE DUKE, UNC, WAKE FOREST, MIAMI, GEORGIA TECH, BOSTON COLLEGE AND VIRGINIA IN FAVOR OF ONE WITH TEXAS TECH, OKLAHOMA STATE, WEST VIRGINIA AND KANSAS STATE.
  (my bolding).

He was pretty jerky but makes a good argument.

But see there is what FSU and Clemson are looking at. The ACC is a Basketball First conference. Just by listing the schools he lists on shows that all the writter and most of the ACC care about is basketball. Could care less about football, even though that is were the money is. That is why FSU and Clemson want out.

Good article from 10 years ago detailing why FSU chose the ACC over the SEC in 1990. Interesting to see that Maryland was one of the schools that voted against FSU joining.

http://jacksonville.com/tu-online/stories/051301/col_6160687.html

Quote
Corrigan woke up on Sept. 12, 1990 certain he had the six votes necessary to move ahead and expand. Duke and Maryland, he knew, would cast the only no votes. He was even more certain that if the league agreed on expansion, adding Florida State would be nothing more than a formality.

In a matter of minutes, Corrigan saw all the hard work on the delicate issue come apart. Clemson, Georgia Tech and Virginia, the strongest supporters on the issue and FSU all along, voted for expansion. Duke and Maryland voted against, but to Corrigan's surprise, North Carolina, North Carolina State and Wake Forest abstained; the equivalent of three no votes.

Expansion was suddenly dead

Also any talk about the SEC swooping in to get FSU needs to remember that FSU already turned them down, I'm sure that didnt sit well.

Quote
Meanwhile, the SEC had caught wind of the ACC's intention to hold an expansion vote and quickly convened its own conference call. They voted to not extend Florida State an invitation to the conference

This is ALL about money.  Money, money, money.  The academics do not get a "say" in this process.

THAT is why I believe that we will see ACC defectors joining the Big 12.

Florida is literally, not figuratively, out-spending FSU by 3 to 4 times in athletics.  THIS is what matters, not the mother rough ridin' inter-library loan advantages with Duke and UNC.

I challenge you to find one sizable FSU donor who cares more about academics than he does about beating Florida.

realignment does not affect academics at all really. at least, it'd be a long shot for the state of florida to threaten FSU with funding cuts because of joining  the BigXII. in terms of $$, support for athletics is way more volatile than academics. piss off a couple of athletics donors, they'll cut their stream of donations to your program, no questions asked. mind you, in florida, the bright futures program covers a lot of the funding for scholarships, and the people in charge of that (florida lottery) are not going to be swayed because of a pure athletic, perfectly fiscal move.

Athletics can help academics if it needed to.  Academics however can not help athletics.

Example:  Aren't we trying to stop being dependent on the University for athletic money?  All that money can go to Academics.

Once university presidents are not involved in the realignment process, academics and athletics can peacefully exist as separate institutions.  Some conferences have already evolved to this stage (SEC)

Just mentioning academics as having any relevance in this whole conversation is evidence that you probably need more thereof.

From the Clemson Blog today..

http://cemetery-hill.com/2012-articles/may/big-12-tv-contract-agreed-in-principle.html

Quote
- An automatic escalator clause of $2 million per team added in expansion. This means if the Big 12 goes to 12 teams each team gets $24 million, 14 teams each team gets $28 miilion, 16 teams each team gets $32 million. This opens the door for it to be attractive for other teams to leave their conference and join the Big 12.

From here on out, everyday that goes by without hearing about the new ACC contract that was supposedly pretty far along months ago, is another day that you can bet that this speculation has serious legs to it. I think the one thing that could derail this is if the ACC somehow can convince Notre Dame to join the ACC in all sports and than add Rutgers or UCONN to make it 16. Pete Thamel touched on this today in his NYT column on the Big East Commissioner.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/08/sports/ncaabasketball/john-marinatto-resigns-as-big-east-commissioner.html?_r=1&ref=sports

Quote
The next critical Jenga piece is Notre Dame, which would definitely leave if the basketball universities left — and could possibly leave even if they don’t. The A.C.C. is the most likely destination. The Irish’s television contract with NBC, currently under negotiation, will go a long way in determining their future — as will how they fare as a stakeholder in the new college football playoff. That appears to be safe and stable for now.

If Notre Dame leaves for the A.C.C., its only realistic destination, the A.C.C. will take Connecticut or Rutgers to make it a 16-team league. And that would send all the Big East blocks tumbling.

Thanks, on a side note some FSU fan on the WV board was explaining that they have a "Seminoles Booster Club" that actually handles their money from ticket sales etc and then adds more money to the official budget. It was the organization mentioned when FSU had to cut 2.5 million this year, I think it normally adds around 16 million a year, not sure if that is included in this estimate but there is still a big difference even if it is included.

Anyone else need to know why the ACC is ripe for the picking?

http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/blog/brett-mcmurphy/18992724

Quote
Delany said one proposal under consideration is the conference champion only model with the requirement that the conference champion would have to be ranked among the top six teams in the country to qualify.

Only the highest four ranked conference champions within the top six rankings would advance to the national semifinals. If less than four conference champions were ranked among the nation's top six teams then the remaining spots would be filled by the highest ranked non-conference champions or independents to fill out the four-team field.

Under this format, in the past eight years, 30 of the 32 teams in the playoff would have been conference champions. Only two teams -- No. 2 Alabama (in 2011) and No. 4 Ohio State (in 2005) -- that weren't a conference champion would have qualified for the national semifinals.

Using the conference affiliation for the schools for each season and not their future affiliation, the SEC would have had the most schools in the playoffs from 2004-11 with eight, including seven conference champions. The Pac-12 and Big 12 would have been next, each with six schools, followed by the Big Ten with five (four conference champions, one at-large), the Mountain West with four, the Big East with two and the ACC with one.

I just want everyone to know how excited I'm going to be during Conference Realignment 2012.

It's like when you're playing football at recess and some more people walk towards the field wanting to play too.  Right now it's 8vs8 but we decide it's ok to go 11vs11.  Quite a few people walked towards the field so not everybody is going to be able to play.  We want the best players for sure, but ultimately don't care because we're already playing and having fun...and happy we're not the ones that will get stuck playing tetherball with the uncoordinated kids.  We once thought we were going to be one of the kids playing tetherball, but puberty hit at the right time and are now playing tight end on the shirts team.
