FSU or Clemson do nothing to expand the SEC's TV footprint and are both going to be blackballed by their in-state SEC counterparts.  V-Tech will more be likely at the top of their list, should CU of FSU jump to the Big XII.

 

If they go to 16, it's going to be VT and NC State.  The SEC has been VERY clear about how they do business, and this is what they would do.

It's not my premise in that it's not what I think will happen.  That is just what I think FSU is hoping for as their best case scearnio.

And as for the SEC never inviting FSU... isn't that exactly the same thing we used to say about TCU here in the Big 12?  The bring nothing to the table.  They have a tiny fanbase, they are in a media market we already own and they are in recruiting territory we already control.  So why did we add them?  They got the invite to join the Big 12 when we learned that the SEC had asked them out on a date.  We had to defend our territory.  It was better to double up in our media markets than to let the SEC have unfettered access to DFW.  I think the SEC looks at FSU in much the same way.  As long as FSU is in the ACC and the SEC does not view the ACC as a threat, then there's no need to invite them.  But if it looks like OU and UT are suddenly going to have a strong presence in the prime recruiting territory that the SEC owns, they can change their minds just as easily as we did.

I still think that FSU is hoping the ACC can come through for them and they can stay right where they are.  That's their best case scenario.  If that doesn't work out, I think they would want the SEC far more than they would want to be in the Big 12.  They're flirting with the Big 12 just to get the SEC's attention (if indeed, there is any contact between the Big 12 and FSU).  If the ACC option ends up not working, FSU is trying to make sure that their backup option, the SEC, is primed and ready.

We're not a threat to the SEC, and they wouldn't look at us as one.  Part of it is hubris, and the other part is the knowledge that the region is SEC country.  We'd get a footprint in there, and therefore, we'd get a significant media presence, but it's why the SEC casually dismisses the ACC now.

I don't doubt that FSU would rather join the SEC.  But that's not what their option is going to be.

The SEC has proven that the money and prestige come from putting a product on the field that people want to watch, and people want to watch excellent football.

Bring FSU and Clemson into this cage match we've created, and you've got yourself a conference that rivals the SEC top-to-bottom.  We may not have the top end talent, but we'll have the depth that they do.

Big East Commissioner John Marinatto resigned Monday after less than three years on the job and a wave of departures by high-profile schools.

Pittsburgh and Syracuse made plans to leave for the Atlantic Coast Conference in September, and West Virginia bolted for the Big 12 the following month. The Big East regrouped by adding Central Florida, Houston, Memphis, SMU and Temple for all sports and Boise State, San Diego State and Navy for football only.

"Our recent expansion efforts have stabilized the conference for the long term, and we are likewise well positioned for our very important upcoming television negotiations," Marinatto said in a statement from the conference. "As a result, I felt this was the right time to step aside and to let someone else lead us through the next chapter of our evolution."

Former Miami Dolphins CEO Joseph Bailey III will serve as interim commissioner. The search for a permanent replacement will be chaired Gregory Williams, the president of the University of Cincinnati and a member of the Big East executive committee.

Marinatto became the third commissioner of the Big East on July 1, 2009. He had served as the conference's senior associate commissioner since 2002 and spent 14 years as the athletic director at Providence College.

"I am proud of what we have been able to accomplish and would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank both our membership and my staff for their unwavering encouragement, support and loyalty — especially during this past year," he said. "I am extremely confident about the future of this league that I love very much."

It’s the off-season, what else do you expect? We have been seeing this rumor for a long time now, but it seems to have reached a fever pitch. The Big XII has done everything in it’s power to stay alive over the last couple years and by adding schools like Florida State and Clemson to the mix would be a key to longevity.

Though the Big XII made it back to 10 teams, the conference really needs to make it back to 12 in order to stay competitive and make money. By getting back to 12, and bringing back the conference championship will bring in more money and more TV viewers, again resulting in more money.

Besides Clemson and FSU, several other schools have been thrown around as potential members, mainly Louisville, which I think would be a terrific addition. It logistically makes sense. There has been a lot of it is “what-if” guesses from people lately, though. But with these two schools (Clemson and Florida State), I’ve heard from more reliable sources than people just throwing names out there.

It would be nice for the Big XII to move that far East, making larger recruiting footprints in the Florida and South Carolina area. Again, this would put Big XII games in television markets on the East coast, resulting in money. I realize that I keep bringing up the money factor, but considering money is what keeps the conference alive, it factors in quite a bit. Just ask the SEC.

If this rumor does have any legs to it, you can believe that the ACC will do everything in their power to keep this from happening. Clemson and Florida State are basically the glue that keeps ACC football together. Basketball fans of either school probably wouldn’t mind the change.

Right now, it’s just rumors and everyone’s favorite person, sources, reporting on the story. But this time around it seems to be gaining more steam than it’s had in the past coming from more reliable people. So we will wait it out with everyone else and enjoy the drama of the off-season.

I’m sure new Big XII member West Virginia would LOVE to add Clemson, and their fan base would look forward to another Orange Bowl -type beat down.
