Seems like with what we've seen today, MU is kind of putting out positive Big 12 vibes.

I move odds of them staying up from 75% to 90% at this point.

While not a surprise, I don’t share this optimism.  These are BOR members who are appointed by an elected official (gov)….who have been, by all accounts, absolutely bombarded by a campaign of fans/voters who want to move.  If you’re the governor, you’re more worried about re-election than if MU can compete for a division title in the SEC.

If you're the governor, do you want Mizzou to receive a major backlash from the KC media about the economic impact of losing the B12 in this city?

People who would change their vote based on a sports team's conference affiliation will come in a very, very distant second to a large number of people that would vote based on the economic impact of sports related butt hurt.

If Missou wants some tier 3 money, they should just generate some themselves. Oh wait...

Fifteen minutes later, when the Kansas locker room opened its doors to the media, the Jayhawks were still crying. Literally, bawling. All of them. I've never seen anything like it, and I've seen devastated college locker rooms -- after losses in the Final Four, the national championship game -- ever

+1

Just amateur political calculus, but if you're fishing for votes based on competing in the Big 12 versus the SEC you're likely to not be the governor for much longer. A guess, but there would be much more political backlash (in the form of less political donations) if the governor supported a decision to uproot a big revenue stream in the KC area every year.

This is all assuming that Mizzou leaving equals no more Big 12 tourney in KC, which is still up for debate I'd say.

Large number?  There’s a larger number of people that want to go than stay.  You might argue that those that want to stay (i.e. those that have a financial interest) have more “influence” because they could choose to not only vote but not donate and that is valid.  I also believe there won’t be backlash at all from the kc media.  None.  Also, per Neinas, Deaton excluded himself from certain discussion in the Big 12 Regents meeting based on legal advice Deaton received from his counsel.    That’s not something you do if you are staying.

supposedly, when the missouri curators meet they are going to vote to give pinkel the power to determine mizzou's conference affiliation.

Surely the curators know that Pinkie can't make sideline decisions, let alone decisions on anything important.

How is the new equal revenue in tier 1/2 and all of hoops going to effect us.  Like, if it was this way last year what would the difference have been for us?

Well, if it stays at 9 schools, that's 16.7 million in guranteed TV moneys starting next year, and pushing 19 million if you factor in Bowl/NCAA.

Zacker...I'm not talking about sports fans.  I'm not talking about the sports pages.  I'm talking about the news section of the KC Star when they start talking about the economic impact of losing the Big 12 events in our city.

In this political climate, no politician is going to want their name associated with a decision that could cost the second largest city in their state millions of dollars of revenue and impact businesses.  That would be the exact same thing as some new city ordinance that would cost us some multi-million dollar convention or something like that.  Take sports out of the equation.  Not everyone cares about sports.  A lot of people care about the economic well being of their city and don't want some stupid sports decision costing KC millions in revenue on an annual basis.

THAT is the biggest factor from a political standpoint.  Not some stupid write in campaign by a bunch of morons who want to see Missouri get destroyed by Alabama and LSU on an annual basis.

Sure.  You recuse yourself because you are either (a) unsure as to how the Curators will vote or (b) because you know how they will vote.  Everything that has come out of the meeting had to of been known by MU for the past 2 weeks.  So it’s not like Deaton/Curators weren’t informed prior to the meeting about what the Big 12 Board was going to do.  My assumption is that he recused himself from the “expansion” portions of the meeting.  You wouldn’t want to even be privy to that information…when you leave to go to the SEC.

The whole Tier 3 thing is so Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) to me.  Just don't let them have HS ball on it, and then get the eff out the way.

It is the ultimate "I wish I was as good as them" butt hurt.  Not like MU or anyone else has contributed a damn thing to making TX something that would sell a lot of Tier 3 content, so why should Mu or anyone else get any of it?

If the conf wants to remain butt hurt, just don't play on their network w/o getting paid.

Shouldn't be hard.

I have to say, I agree with this completely. Very simple. If TX can drive their own network (to televise stuff that no national network wants), that should be their perrogative (sp?). They have a reasonable expectation to do this -- all the whining by teir II confy schools is just petty. Also agree that HS stuff is out of bounds and over the line.

Petro made a good point today.  He basically called the 6-years worthless and an out for OU, UT.  Basically them saying well we'll try this for 6 years.  A real obligation would be a rolling 6-years.
If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

They said, specifically, that it was at least six years on the call.  It could be more.

Also, whatever Petro thinks, you should do the exact opposite.

6 years is good risk management.  That gives the league time to know what the new Tier 1 deal will be and if the dollars aren't there make deals to land somewhere better (at least for the haves).  I don't really see how you could get more than a six year agreement out of anybody, makes good sense from a business point of view.

Yeah, as I peruse the shaggybevo threads on this subject, my gut feeling is that UT wants a pause in this realignment process; not an end.  Should it be UT going to Pac or Big 10 on their own terms (LHN up and running) or UT and ND trying to form their own conference of some kind I still feel this will end badly for us.

That said, will take the hundred million+ dollars over the next few years.

No.  You recuse yourself no matter what.  It would be a conflict to say a single word especially if he was trying to facilitate a move.  I don't think it means he knows anything is settled.

Also, the folks who want to run away to the SEC have no where near the pull of those folks who want mu in the Big 12.  At least that is MHO.  The folks with real money in KC do not want to lose the tourney, do not want to lose future border wars (if they are ever worth crap at the same time) and don't want UMKC to get mumped.

Allowing a state university to remove millions and millions from the economy will be very unpopular.  Even if all the bros from the Lambda Chi house are totally in favor of it.

The irony there is that if the LHN becomes successful, their options severely dwindle.

Who would want to sign a deal longer than 6 yrs in the first place?  Not like we can't come up with an extension down the road if we want to.

Six years takes us one year into our next deal.  At that point, if the conference falls apart, there can be ramifications if schools lose revenue (i.e. us).

So, I don't get why people are freaked out over this.  Six years doesn't take us to the next deal.  It takes us into the next deal.

There s a big difference there.

QFT. And no school would accept a 6 year rolling deal. That is suicide. There is no way a school could ever leave under those circumstances unless everyone in the Big 12 agreed to dissolve the conference.
