you are right to worry in that's it's not a long term commitment but it gives the conference time to get to 12 teams and demonstrate some stability.   it also gives everyone time to see if all parties will stick to the new rules and like the new rules.

Suppose they could but the SEC at 13 is very different than the Big Televen.  The Big Ten didn't have divisions.  Don't know how they would schedule with two divisions with an unbalanced number of teams.

you were right on with the negotiations aspect, although you may have wavered a bit in the end.  if anything detracts from this, it's your thesis that big east teams would stay put.

The meltdown (granted it was/is from a tweet which might not contain all the information) was derived from the idea that a 5 year (or 100 year or 1000 year) “commitment” was going to somehow remediate the issue of retention. It doesn’t.  Pledges don’t.  The only thing that would, imo, is severe penalties.  People could say “you can’t build trust if you hold people hostage”.  I say you can’t trust anyone with options.  Espeically when that option is easy to attain.  Making the TV revenue penalty more severe and instituting a punitive payment would address the issue of retention (or rather it would be more effective).  It wouldn’t completely address retention, obviously, but it’s much better than some “commitment”.  Creating an environment similar to every other successful conference (i.e. equal revenue sharing with a tier 3 conference network) would be another step.

I still kinda want to pull some teams from the big east (TCU, Conn, UL, etc, no order).  Can you imagine the big 12 going from death bed to first conference with 16 teams?  Strike while the iron is hot, or in this case before the iron is sold at the Big 12 going out of business garage sale.

Big 12 going to 16 teams would be stupid if all other conferences are holding strong.  I do agree that we need to go to 12, and I see that happening sooner than later.
