Why is 12 team conference with ND any more likely than a 10 team conference with ND?
easier (more logical) to play a 7 game schedule, allows championship game, allows nd to bring 1-3 schools of their choice with them.
Why is limiting the number of conference games in a 12 team league easier than limiting the number of conference games in a 10 team league? Texas doesn't seem to care about a championship game, do they? Does ND care about having their pick of teams in the conference if they can play them every year anyway?
You need a logical way of determining a champion, and if you don't play everybody, or at least almost play everybody, it's hard to do that without a championship game. I could be wrong, but I believe it would take special permission from the NCAA to play a championship game with a 10 team conference.
I think the real selling point with the pod system I laid out is that the championship game would still be the 7th conference game the participants played, so there wouldn't be any griping about how the championship game created a harder path to a national championship. By placing OU and UT in the same pod, they are assured of only having to face each other once in a given season, which would make it easier for each school to get to national championships and BCS games. sys is probably right about them not wanting to get left out of the 4-team playoff, though.
