The ONLY things we have going for us with regard to Notre Dame are:

1. They can form the Notre Dame Network

2. They really shouldn't care about the stability of the conference. If we implode, their worst case scenario is being right back where they are today, and that's a pretty good position.

That said, it's never going to happen and I wish people would just stop mentioning them.

I mean, I know that Notre Dame wants to continue to play Michigan, USC, and all of the service academies every year, and we won't be able to let them do that with a 10 team conference. It just doesn't make sense that ND would want to come here, but every time I hear that a Big 12 official say we're pursuing ND, one of these guys:  creeps into my mind.

In order to stop the further creation of super-conferences, the NCAA changes the rules to allow 10 team conferences to a hold title game, thereby making a 10 team big12 attractive to ND.  A 7 game conference schedule allows ND to keep their most important rivalries and have a cross division partner ship with UT.  

Our cross division partnership with OU is a small price to pay for living happily ever after.

12 teams, 7 game schedule, 1 of the other new schools is someone nd wants to play (af is not among these), the other byu, nd's intra divisional games would include 1 in texas (baylor?).  it might have some appeal.  not much, but maybe more than anything they've ever looked at before.  they could play usc, navy and one of the um, msu or purdue every year and have two games left to cast nationwide.  if they had say 2 conference games in texas, 1 in utah, 1 somewhere in the upper midwest/ne (or maybe florida?), that's just 3 conference games they wouldn't like.  that's not that bad.

i don't know who they could get to go with nd though.  it's pretty far fetched.

yeah, but they aren't a priority.  usc, navy, um, msu, purdue, stanford, pitt are priorities (pretty much in order).  army is a semi priority.  af is just convenient fodder.


no rivalries/traditions in florida or texas, but i'm sure they'd also love to play in those areas.

If Big 12 officials think that talking to Notre Dame is anything other than exercising due diligence, then this conference really is doomed (and respected).

Yeah, because some random poster on a KSU BBS would have far greater insight into ND and running a conference as a whole than the people who actually do run a BCS conference.    Hope you know how to keep your trap shut at work, no one likes a chatty fry guy.

This whole conference realignment issue really makes me wonder how things would be had things played out differently on December 5, 1998.  Had we won that game and gone on to play in the NC game, I can't help but think our stature as a big-time program would have increased and likely lasted well beyond 2003.  I don't think we would be nearly as vulnerable as it appears we are today.  Secondly, if A&M lost that game, would the SEC be as likely to take them at this point in time had they never won a single Big 12 title?  Maybe that would not have mattered, but it is quite a coincidence that the same team that destroyed our fortunes once is poised to do it again.  FYI they are rapidly becoming my most hated team in the conference.

easier (more logical) to play a 7 game schedule, allows championship game, allows nd to bring 1-3 schools of their choice with them.

that's very clever.  if i understand it correctly, the 2nd place team from each pod has no chance to play for the championship?  if so, i can't see ou & ut in the same pod.  but of course they have to play each year.  tough.  still it might be made to work.

Yeah, you can't preserve rivalries and make the divisions fair. In the end, though, it's just a conference schedule, so determining the champion is the only thing that really matters. If OU couldn't beat Texas in division play, they probably wouldn't have beaten them in the playoffs, either. There's nothing to say that a team that didn't make it to the top 4 couldn't still be a BCS at large team.
